Difference Between Poetry And Prose
The difference between poetry and prose is often chalked up to the presence or lack of rhyme and rhythm in writing. Though this might work with
some classical poetry, some classical poets experimented with and broke the rules of rhythm and rhyme in favor of artistic meaning. Though many
modern poets choose to use rhyme and rhythm in obvious ways, there are many who choose to throw the rules out the window. It is now necessary for
students of poetry to not only understand how to differentiate between a poem with rhythm or rhyme and one without, but to also be able to discern
when that rhyme and rhythm, or lack thereof, provides key insight into the poem. In order to further understand and practice analyzing rhythm and
rhyme in poetry, we have chosen four poems which demonstrate different ways to use rhyme and rhythm to demonstrate or influence thematic
meaning, structure, or purpose. The four poems that we have chosen to examine range in author, style, theme, and subject; however, they all contain
distinct examples of rhyme and rhythm. Though, as a class, we have touched on rhyme and rhythm before, we want to explore these concepts more
specifically and more in depth. As both elements contribute to the overall tone, accessibility, and structure, or lack thereof, of the poem, we feel that
everyone would benefit from a more in depth analysis of rhyme and rhythm and how they affect our understanding of a poem. Practicing scanning and
interpreting the feet of the poem will be

Which Is Better Poetry and Prose? Essay
'Prose; words in their best order; – poetry: the best words in the best order' (Coleridge). A reflection on Coleridge's definition,
Nobody can claim that prose is a somewhat less commendable form of literature than poetry. Prose must still contain a certain amount of veraciousness
and technique in order to be created. However poetry requires these things in order to be successful and whilst it is some people's view that prose is
layered with different meanings and is read to be analysed, poetry is simple, often encapsulating intricate ideas using a minimal amount of words; and
it is not produced to explain or create an argument but instead persuade the reader through the power of the language it contains and the intricate way in

However poetry can take these standard words and their meaning from the storytelling of prose and use its own devices, by adding structure and form,
to convey the authors original meaning. This added use of structure allows the poet to say things in an unusual and imaginative way rather than stick to
the confinements of prose structure which is designed for clarity not for creativity. In poetry the structure of the piece is more than just a way of
displaying the content to the reader, it can be manipulated and changed and without the clues which the grammar in prose provides, the reading of a
poem becomes much more ambiguous.
Poetry can lift the reader into their own imagination in just a few short lines, and reading it can take you on a journey from the ordinary life to an
illuminated extraordinary existence.
"To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour."
These words written taken from the first stanza of William Blake's 'Auguries of Innocence'(1863) are a powerful example of this technique. Here
Blake uses a tiny grain of sand to invoke the gigantic imagery of the world and by doing so engages the readers' minds whilst also acting as a powerful
tool to ignite their

Edgar Allan Poe's Short Prose Analysis
The images of self and others in Edgar Allan Poe's short prose
Edgar Allan Poe's imaginary universe in his short prose is based on ideas like death, fear, burial, mourning, selfhood, and on the versions or faces the
human mind or phyche can take. Such images outlines a romantic conscience, preoccupied with the analysis of selfhood, choosing a gothic
environment for his short and dense stories. As expected, his prose gravitates towards thriller, horror or detective stories, styles of literary fiction that
he elaborated the most as a writer. The aim of this essay is to show how the concept of selfhood and its modern variations appears in E.A. Poe's prose,
emphasizing the distinction between I and You, or self and others. As mainly psychological thrillers, one of the main ideas Poe underlines in...show

Hence, the individual, in Poe's short prose, is by nature incomplete, however, not all his characters pursuit unity, whereas founding their
complementary self, or double, can only be followed by death, as the most complete state of being. In this essay I am going to emphasise Poe's modern
vision of the selfhood, embodied in the sheer distinction between the self – I – and – the other–, which is an expression of the divided conscience of
the modern man. Analyzing some major prose of E.A. Poe, such as William Wilson, The fall of the house of Usher and The Purloined letter I will try
to demonstrate that the concept of self is shown as an incomplete entity, which, paradoxically, though typical for a modern mind, longs for unity, but in
the same time feels an overwhelming awe for the loss of the individuality, which Poe presents as an anticipation of dying.
As I have mentioned, one genre that Poe had written in style of was detective fiction. Firstly, I'm going to analyse the concept of selfhood in The
Purloined letter, by referring to the pseudo–detective couple: Dupin and the

Francine Prose's Confessions Of A Ritual Tourist
While reading Francine Prose's essay Confessions of a Ritual Tourist, I believe that she successfully conveyed the concept of a ritual tourist using
both her negative and positive definitions. For example, Prose brings up the negatives of the German tourists in paragraph thirteen of the essay.
Prose talks about how they would push their way to the front of the crowd, talking loudly, and how they were loaded with cameras; seemingly not
understanding or caring that the ceremony was very real to the other people present. Prose brings up the importance of respecting and understanding
that the ceremonies or rituals are being performed by real people who truly believe. In paragraph ten, Prose talks about how she has heard stories of
tourists crossing boundaries of respect during rituals. She states until she had received her own lesson about the dangers of ritual tourism, she had not
realized how culpable she had been. In my opinion, Prose does a good job connecting both the negatives and...show more content...
However, I now believe it is necessary to be more aware of what could be construed as disrespect while in other countries to avoid needless grief for
myself or others. I also have realized that trying to immerse yourself in the culture can backfire. For example, when Prose and her husband went to
the tea house in India and got a nasty case of dysentery because they did not know it was known for its filth and the variety of diseases you can
catch there. Knowing the concept of ritual travel might change the way others choose to travel. It may cause people to research and learn what is
acceptable in the country or region to which they are traveling, before seeking out or participating in any ceremonies. However, I do not believe it
will affect the way I choose to travel. I am not one to seek out ceremonies or rituals I do not fully understand, or are not native to my

What Is Literature? Essay
Since the 18th century, the definition of the concept "literature" has become a problematic and a controversial issue among various literary schools.
What is literature? What are the qualities that distinguish a literary text from a non–literary one? Does literature have any particular function in
society? These are some crucial questions whose answers were supposed to limit and define the scope of "literature". However, various literary and
critical schools have advanced different and contradictory responses to these same questions, which have consequently led to a failure in producing an
authoritatively established definition of "literature". This failure can be ascribed to many reasons, but because the length of the paper doesn't...show

This new sense, which was ascribed to the development of printing, was "a specialization В… to the printed word and especially the printed books
with certain quality [imaginative works]" (Williams, 46). To elaborate on this definition, R. Wellek and A. Warren have stated that "in all of them
[the printed books with certain quality], the reference is to the world of fiction, of imagination" (Wellek and Warren, Theory of Literature, 25).
However, a simple review of the history of prose narrative forms would show that this definition of literature as a category of fictional and
imaginative writings is irrelevant. Many writings which were written as anthropological documentaries were making use of fiction, while many other
fictional works were given the status of documentary and factual writings. All travelogue writings and western historiography between the middle
ages and the twentieth century are good examples to illustrate this point. Works like T.E. Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom, W.M. Thackeray's
From Cornhill to Cairo, Kingslake's Eothen, and Sir Thomas More's Utopia made use of both fact and fiction. Moreover, at the time of their
appearance, most of these works were conceived of by the western audience as factual and documentary writings. Later on, due to some historical and
political changes in the world, these writings became conceived of as fictional and imaginary works.

Defining Literature Essay
The definition of literature has been discussed and argued over time and there is no precise answer to be given. Any reader or author can define
literature as whatever they wish it to be defined as. This is more of an opinion of how one views certain pieces of work or writings and whether or
not they feel that is actually literature or not. Literature is any type of creative writing such as fiction or poetry, for example. Literature is also any
form of body of written works of language, which could be from the English era or even as far back as the Shakespearean or Elizabethan era. It is also
work from a specific period or culture defining key elements or somehow relating to and/or expressing how it is exactly from that time. The...show more

In her poem, "Dylan" in lines 4 and 5, she writes, "Her hair was a halo of warm light / and color dripped off her tongue" (23). The reader can
interpret just from those two lines the creativity and imagination not only in that one poem, but also in all poetry. The description of hair being a halo
of warm light allows the reader to use his or her own imagination to perceive that image in whichever way they would like. Creative writing can be
determined by many other things not only image or structure of how the poem is set into stanzas, but what is left up to the reader for interpretation.
Jewel writes in "Cautious" in lines 23–29, "an open vessel / whose function it was / to be filled / until my consciousness / could return and / spit out
/ the bad seeds" (18). After reading these lines the reader can be left with different feelings and emotions that vary from disgust or simplicity. This
is just another example of how poetry is creative writing. According to the American Heritage Dictionary, literature is defined as being the body of
written works of a language, period, or culture. An author of any specific type of writing or works can include certain details pertaining to language
or other details, which allow the reader to develop a sensory image of that specific period or culture. If the reader had no prior knowledge to the
language, period, or culture of the writing he or she would be reading, upon reading and analyzing

Poetry vs. Prose: A Killer Topic
It started with an argument between which is better, poetry or prose, and it ended with a knife. On January 20, 2014, a Russian man was stabbed to
death in the Sverdlovsk region over an argument of which is better, poetry or prose. Poetry and prose have various common aspects, though it is their
differences that make each unique in how they are loved. There seem to be three types of people in the world, those who love poetry and hate prose,
those who love prose and despise poetry, and the mediators that love both. There is no in between opinions in this matter. Although poetry and prose
are undeniable different in their use of language, format, and structure, I found that their differences are what makes them both so beautiful in their
own unique way. Poetry and prose use language to express the feeling they are trying to convey very differently. Poetry is a form of literary art in
which the language used to bring vivid images to the reader's mind and has a designed to have a very pleasing appearance in addition to the meaning of
the poems. On the other hand, prose is the most quintessential form of language and is very straightforward. Poetry has a beautiful rhythmical
composition to it, exciting pleasure by beautiful, creative, or even whimsical thoughts while prose is written without the metrical structure that
distinguishes it from poetry. The language of poetry tends to be more expressive or brightened with comparisons, rhyme, and rhythm which all
contributes to a

Stylistic prose technique 1: IMAGERY Authors who use imagery wish to give the readers a physical feeling of literature while reading any sort of
piece. It allows for the audience to connect to the characters on a deeper level by having them experience the same feelings, smells, noises, etc, as did
the roles in the novel. Alan Paton uses a strong voice packed with imagery in his passage, "For they grow red and bare; they cannot hold the rain
and mist, and the streams are dry in the kloofs. Too many cattle feed upon the grass, and too many fires have burned it. Stand shod upon it, for it is
coarse and sharp, and the stones cut under the feet. It is not kept or guarded, or cared for, it no longer keeps men, guards men, cares for men" (Paton,
34). The overwhelming senses of touch and vision are more than prevalent in this brief passage, with Paton perfectly conveying the atmosphere of rural
South Africa in the 1940's. The reader gets a catholic impression of the arid climate as well as the deteriorated lands on which it rests. By including this
in his novel, Alan Paton establishes a thorough setting, one of which the reader can fully understand for the remaining duration of Cry, The Beloved
Country.
Stylistic prose technique 2: DRAMATICIRONY In short, dramatic irony is in any given literary scenario when future actions can be accurately
anticipated by the readers but not the characters. It often includes cliches and is used by authors wishing to give their audience insight that their
characters do not yet have. Powerful dramatic irony is demonstrated in the scene: "– Shall I get your ticket for you, umfundisi? Then you need not lose
your place in the line while I go to the ticket office... As though he has suddenly though of something he left the line, and walked to the corner, but there
was no sign of the young man... – Where is the ticket office my friend? – You get your ticket on the bus. There is no ticket office" (Paton, 49). Alan
Paton is able to show how vulnerable and naГЇve Stephen Kumalo is to the big city; using something so predictable as a sly, nevertheless, predictable
con artist, he shows how foreign lies and deceit are to the pastor.
Stylistic prose technique 3: LOGOS Logos is a stylistic prose

English Prose
The Teaching of English Prose is a major concern of all schools and colleges, but in what shape is it and how is it poised, if at all, to take on new
tasks critical to the development of awareness and understanding the young in an age of rapidly evolving information technology.
Perhaps the most dramatic the development that has taken place in the field of English language teaching in the last 50 years has been the shift in its
primary function.. from being mainly the native language of nations such as the UK or USA, to being mainly a global means of communication. The
speakers of English whose L1 is another language already vastly out number native English speakers, and their number countries to grow. For most of
its learners, English is therefore no longer a foreign language. This development has brought with it a number of changes in the principles and practice
of English language teaching.

Prose In Defoe's Robinson Crusoe
When Robinson Crusoe was first published in 1719, it was as an autobiography. Defoe had omitted his name from the work, and instead titled it as
the writings of Crusoe himself. And people believed him. They believed in this outrageous, extraordinary adventure because it was written in such an
ordinary manner. Defoe's style of writing is of the everyday man; a man simply trying to get all his thoughts down in one place. Prose is not what
makes Robinson Crusoe such a literary masterpiece – the real genius of the novel is Defoe's ability to captivate his audience and fool them into
believing that what they are reading is reality.
There is no real structure, no logical end to Robinson Crusoe. In the words of Terry Eagleton, it is merely a case of "accumulating
narrative."(Eagleton, 55) Defoe wrote rapidly; Robinson Crusoe is a result of the white heat of creativity. He did not return to edit...show more content...
Crusoe's outlook is very much that of the everyday Englishman. He does not fully describe his "emotional reaction to some terrifying event,"(Novak,

Crusoe is not Shakespeare – it contains no "Immortal longings."(Shakespeare, 171) Crusoe is ambitious, yes, but even his most lofty ambitions
reside within the confines of his society's ideology. Crusoe is a flawed character, but his flaws are not only the fatal hamartia of a Greek tragedy. He
is greedy and selfish, but such "propensity of nature"(Defoe, 3) is portrayed in such a way that makes it seem acceptable because it was. Robinson
Crusoe represents the zenith of western civilisation; he is the quintessential economic man. Any "evil influence"(Defoe, 17) which followed him was
one society could not fault him for, as it most likely resided in them as

Nonfiction is the broadest category of literature. Autobiographies, biographies, memoirs, letters, essays, speeches and news articles are just a few of the
many types of nonfiction writing. All of these forms of prose concern real, rather than imaginary subjects. Nonfiction writers present information they
consider true. Like fiction, nonfiction writing can be creative.

At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
1.Differentiate a nonfiction from short story;
2.Define nonfiction;
3.Discuss the characteristics of nonfiction;
4.Point out important details in an essay;

Definition Essay: What Is The Concept Of Respect?
Respect can be defined in the dictionary as,"a feeling or understanding that someone or something is important, serious, etc., and should be treated in an
appropriate way"(Merriam–Webster), or also as,"a way of treating or thinking about something or someone"(vocabulary.com). Respect, personally,
means to have integrity and to know when someone superior tells someone something and they listen to them and respond in a good manor. Respect is
a concept of something that is not given but rather earned, it is something that someone must be raised to give, and also it can be something that can
show how much someone means to someone else and how they think of them. For someone to earn respect from others they themselves must first
respect others. Respect can be a concept of treating something in the correct manner in which it should be treated, which means that for someone like
to earn the respect of others, they would first have to give them the same respect as they wanted in return. Once they earn that person's respect, it is an
honor because that means that that person thinks that highly of them. Respect can also be defined as something that if someone was not raised with

Flower also explains that a reader – based style of writing focuses on the audience and how they are able to understand what the author is trying to

Academic Prose Vs. Writing
Over the past eight weeks, this course has required me to write more academic prose than I have at any time outside of high school. While my job
has required writing long documents, they are almost always persuasive or technical documents. I now reflect on my daily reading and writing in a
different way as a result of this class. I can see how I have grown even from the first week to today. In each of the assignments below I can see my
own growth and learning. When I read my first essay again for this assignment, I found myself picking it apart in a way I do not think I was capable
of when it was initially written. A few lines and paragraphs have been rewritten to remove poorly worded sentences and choppy thoughts, but the
whole subject and the way it was presented seems poor in hindsight. If I were asked to write the same assignment today I would not rewrite what was
there, but start over entirely. The edits I made in this revision were in an effort to make it the best version of what was originally written, but it is not
representative of what I can produce. Luckily, I had the opportunity to learn more about research and writing while participating in IDS101. Prior to
this class, my last formal training in writing and English language skills was in a UConn cooperative class I took in high school. It was equivalent to
entry–level college English class and was very demanding, but still not the same as this class. In that class, I was often tasked with writing material

Definition Essay: What Is The Purpose Of A Hero
An expectation of a hero can be determined in countless ways, but they are "someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself."
(Joseph Campbell) They always secure their surroundings to be safe and free of nefarious actions. They protect and heal all the ones who have gone
through or done harm. Heroes never let fear stride into their way. Ahero is someone who has courage, bravery, devotion, strength, and justice.
Because of the difficult obstacles and chaos by the world, the function or purpose of a hero is necessary. Many people depend on others, who are
stronger or braver than themselves, when they are in need. Some people also need someone to look up to. Having someone to look up to will
bring inspiration and motivation to them. Heroes also provide ease and reassurance to us, making us feel safe and protected at all times. We as
people need heroes to guide, influence and inspire us. Heroes guide us to the greater things, influence us to be better, and inspire us to be courageous,

lives without something that gives their life purpose and meaning. There are exactly three things in this world that give my life purpose. Two of
those things are people. These are people that drive me to reach my goals. The third thing that gives my life purpose is ultimately the goal that I
aim to reach in life. That goal would simply be to be better. I aim to a better parent than mine have been and I aim to be better at doing what makes

The Impact Of Stereotypes And Stereotypes
The Impact of Stereotypes
Stereotype:
1. A widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.
2. A person or thing that conforms to a widely held but oversimplified image of the class or type to which they belong.
Stereotypes are one of the most common issues, today and throughout history, that cause our nation to be divided. It has a problem inside and out of

However, they should not be chastised for their decision.
Throughout history, there have been many experiments and works of literature showcasing the effect and various perspectives of being marginalized
in society. For example, the prose essay written by Fang Gao titled, "What it means to be a 'model minority': voices of ethnic Koreans in Northeast
China." In this article, he explains the different opinions and struggles that Koreans have, living in China. Gao suggests that Koreans and Asians share
the same racials label: portrayed as a model minority that is primed for socioeconomic advancement and academic success (qtd. in Gao 55). This
stereotype has a negative effect on both the Chinese and Korean population. The stereotype of a 'model minority' is making it challenging for Koreans
to become their own individual ethnic group in China. Thus, making them feel unrecognized and marginalized into the chinese population. For
instance, some people are proud to be a Korean in China because it often implies the struggle they went through, in able to cross the border of
communist North Korea and making it into China.

Difference Between Poetry And Prose

  • 1. Difference Between Poetry And Prose The difference between poetry and prose is often chalked up to the presence or lack of rhyme and rhythm in writing. Though this might work with some classical poetry, some classical poets experimented with and broke the rules of rhythm and rhyme in favor of artistic meaning. Though many modern poets choose to use rhyme and rhythm in obvious ways, there are many who choose to throw the rules out the window. It is now necessary for students of poetry to not only understand how to differentiate between a poem with rhythm or rhyme and one without, but to also be able to discern when that rhyme and rhythm, or lack thereof, provides key insight into the poem. In order to further understand and practice analyzing rhythm and rhyme in poetry, we have chosen four poems which demonstrate different ways to use rhyme and rhythm to demonstrate or influence thematic meaning, structure, or purpose. The four poems that we have chosen to examine range in author, style, theme, and subject; however, they all contain distinct examples of rhyme and rhythm. Though, as a class, we have touched on rhyme and rhythm before, we want to explore these concepts more specifically and more in depth. As both elements contribute to the overall tone, accessibility, and structure, or lack thereof, of the poem, we feel that everyone would benefit from a more in depth analysis of rhyme and rhythm and how they affect our understanding of a poem. Practicing scanning and interpreting the feet of the poem will be Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Which Is Better Poetry and Prose? Essay 'Prose; words in their best order; – poetry: the best words in the best order' (Coleridge). A reflection on Coleridge's definition, Nobody can claim that prose is a somewhat less commendable form of literature than poetry. Prose must still contain a certain amount of veraciousness and technique in order to be created. However poetry requires these things in order to be successful and whilst it is some people's view that prose is layered with different meanings and is read to be analysed, poetry is simple, often encapsulating intricate ideas using a minimal amount of words; and it is not produced to explain or create an argument but instead persuade the reader through the power of the language it contains and the intricate way in which...show more content... However poetry can take these standard words and their meaning from the storytelling of prose and use its own devices, by adding structure and form, to convey the authors original meaning. This added use of structure allows the poet to say things in an unusual and imaginative way rather than stick to the confinements of prose structure which is designed for clarity not for creativity. In poetry the structure of the piece is more than just a way of displaying the content to the reader, it can be manipulated and changed and without the clues which the grammar in prose provides, the reading of a poem becomes much more ambiguous. Poetry can lift the reader into their own imagination in just a few short lines, and reading it can take you on a journey from the ordinary life to an illuminated extraordinary existence. "To see a world in a grain of sand, And a heaven in a wild flower, Hold infinity in the palm of your hand, And eternity in an hour." These words written taken from the first stanza of William Blake's 'Auguries of Innocence'(1863) are a powerful example of this technique. Here Blake uses a tiny grain of sand to invoke the gigantic imagery of the world and by doing so engages the readers' minds whilst also acting as a powerful tool to ignite their

  • 4. Edgar Allan Poe's Short Prose Analysis The images of self and others in Edgar Allan Poe's short prose Edgar Allan Poe's imaginary universe in his short prose is based on ideas like death, fear, burial, mourning, selfhood, and on the versions or faces the human mind or phyche can take. Such images outlines a romantic conscience, preoccupied with the analysis of selfhood, choosing a gothic environment for his short and dense stories. As expected, his prose gravitates towards thriller, horror or detective stories, styles of literary fiction that he elaborated the most as a writer. The aim of this essay is to show how the concept of selfhood and its modern variations appears in E.A. Poe's prose, emphasizing the distinction between I and You, or self and others. As mainly psychological thrillers, one of the main ideas Poe underlines in...show more content... Hence, the individual, in Poe's short prose, is by nature incomplete, however, not all his characters pursuit unity, whereas founding their complementary self, or double, can only be followed by death, as the most complete state of being. In this essay I am going to emphasise Poe's modern vision of the selfhood, embodied in the sheer distinction between the self – I – and – the other–, which is an expression of the divided conscience of the modern man. Analyzing some major prose of E.A. Poe, such as William Wilson, The fall of the house of Usher and The Purloined letter I will try to demonstrate that the concept of self is shown as an incomplete entity, which, paradoxically, though typical for a modern mind, longs for unity, but in the same time feels an overwhelming awe for the loss of the individuality, which Poe presents as an anticipation of dying. As I have mentioned, one genre that Poe had written in style of was detective fiction. Firstly, I'm going to analyse the concept of selfhood in The Purloined letter, by referring to the pseudo–detective couple: Dupin and the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Francine Prose's Confessions Of A Ritual Tourist While reading Francine Prose's essay Confessions of a Ritual Tourist, I believe that she successfully conveyed the concept of a ritual tourist using both her negative and positive definitions. For example, Prose brings up the negatives of the German tourists in paragraph thirteen of the essay. Prose talks about how they would push their way to the front of the crowd, talking loudly, and how they were loaded with cameras; seemingly not understanding or caring that the ceremony was very real to the other people present. Prose brings up the importance of respecting and understanding that the ceremonies or rituals are being performed by real people who truly believe. In paragraph ten, Prose talks about how she has heard stories of tourists crossing boundaries of respect during rituals. She states until she had received her own lesson about the dangers of ritual tourism, she had not realized how culpable she had been. In my opinion, Prose does a good job connecting both the negatives and...show more content... However, I now believe it is necessary to be more aware of what could be construed as disrespect while in other countries to avoid needless grief for myself or others. I also have realized that trying to immerse yourself in the culture can backfire. For example, when Prose and her husband went to the tea house in India and got a nasty case of dysentery because they did not know it was known for its filth and the variety of diseases you can catch there. Knowing the concept of ritual travel might change the way others choose to travel. It may cause people to research and learn what is acceptable in the country or region to which they are traveling, before seeking out or participating in any ceremonies. However, I do not believe it will affect the way I choose to travel. I am not one to seek out ceremonies or rituals I do not fully understand, or are not native to my Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. What Is Literature? Essay Since the 18th century, the definition of the concept "literature" has become a problematic and a controversial issue among various literary schools. What is literature? What are the qualities that distinguish a literary text from a non–literary one? Does literature have any particular function in society? These are some crucial questions whose answers were supposed to limit and define the scope of "literature". However, various literary and critical schools have advanced different and contradictory responses to these same questions, which have consequently led to a failure in producing an authoritatively established definition of "literature". This failure can be ascribed to many reasons, but because the length of the paper doesn't...show more content... This new sense, which was ascribed to the development of printing, was "a specialization В… to the printed word and especially the printed books with certain quality [imaginative works]" (Williams, 46). To elaborate on this definition, R. Wellek and A. Warren have stated that "in all of them [the printed books with certain quality], the reference is to the world of fiction, of imagination" (Wellek and Warren, Theory of Literature, 25). However, a simple review of the history of prose narrative forms would show that this definition of literature as a category of fictional and imaginative writings is irrelevant. Many writings which were written as anthropological documentaries were making use of fiction, while many other fictional works were given the status of documentary and factual writings. All travelogue writings and western historiography between the middle ages and the twentieth century are good examples to illustrate this point. Works like T.E. Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom, W.M. Thackeray's From Cornhill to Cairo, Kingslake's Eothen, and Sir Thomas More's Utopia made use of both fact and fiction. Moreover, at the time of their appearance, most of these works were conceived of by the western audience as factual and documentary writings. Later on, due to some historical and political changes in the world, these writings became conceived of as fictional and imaginary works. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Francine Prose Horrifying lists of text book is wasting a time of student in school, Francine Prose complained about teaching standers in today's school and college. Recently, I read prose article "I Know Why The Caged Bird Cannot Read", Where she is arguing on a effectiveness of any texts book that are highly available in schools and college. In her article, she said that future generation in in danger. The way of teaching and available text book are leading the future of today's kids towards doom. It seems difficult to find out that school student is learning literature because this generations school children are unknown about real text book; real literature. It makes her shock that society is admiring Montel Williams and Ricki Lake instead of Dante and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Defining Literature Essay The definition of literature has been discussed and argued over time and there is no precise answer to be given. Any reader or author can define literature as whatever they wish it to be defined as. This is more of an opinion of how one views certain pieces of work or writings and whether or not they feel that is actually literature or not. Literature is any type of creative writing such as fiction or poetry, for example. Literature is also any form of body of written works of language, which could be from the English era or even as far back as the Shakespearean or Elizabethan era. It is also work from a specific period or culture defining key elements or somehow relating to and/or expressing how it is exactly from that time. The...show more content... In her poem, "Dylan" in lines 4 and 5, she writes, "Her hair was a halo of warm light / and color dripped off her tongue" (23). The reader can interpret just from those two lines the creativity and imagination not only in that one poem, but also in all poetry. The description of hair being a halo of warm light allows the reader to use his or her own imagination to perceive that image in whichever way they would like. Creative writing can be determined by many other things not only image or structure of how the poem is set into stanzas, but what is left up to the reader for interpretation. Jewel writes in "Cautious" in lines 23–29, "an open vessel / whose function it was / to be filled / until my consciousness / could return and / spit out / the bad seeds" (18). After reading these lines the reader can be left with different feelings and emotions that vary from disgust or simplicity. This is just another example of how poetry is creative writing. According to the American Heritage Dictionary, literature is defined as being the body of written works of a language, period, or culture. An author of any specific type of writing or works can include certain details pertaining to language or other details, which allow the reader to develop a sensory image of that specific period or culture. If the reader had no prior knowledge to the language, period, or culture of the writing he or she would be reading, upon reading and analyzing Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Poetry vs. Prose: A Killer Topic It started with an argument between which is better, poetry or prose, and it ended with a knife. On January 20, 2014, a Russian man was stabbed to death in the Sverdlovsk region over an argument of which is better, poetry or prose. Poetry and prose have various common aspects, though it is their differences that make each unique in how they are loved. There seem to be three types of people in the world, those who love poetry and hate prose, those who love prose and despise poetry, and the mediators that love both. There is no in between opinions in this matter. Although poetry and prose are undeniable different in their use of language, format, and structure, I found that their differences are what makes them both so beautiful in their own unique way. Poetry and prose use language to express the feeling they are trying to convey very differently. Poetry is a form of literary art in which the language used to bring vivid images to the reader's mind and has a designed to have a very pleasing appearance in addition to the meaning of the poems. On the other hand, prose is the most quintessential form of language and is very straightforward. Poetry has a beautiful rhythmical composition to it, exciting pleasure by beautiful, creative, or even whimsical thoughts while prose is written without the metrical structure that distinguishes it from poetry. The language of poetry tends to be more expressive or brightened with comparisons, rhyme, and rhythm which all contributes to a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Stylistic prose technique 1: IMAGERY Authors who use imagery wish to give the readers a physical feeling of literature while reading any sort of piece. It allows for the audience to connect to the characters on a deeper level by having them experience the same feelings, smells, noises, etc, as did the roles in the novel. Alan Paton uses a strong voice packed with imagery in his passage, "For they grow red and bare; they cannot hold the rain and mist, and the streams are dry in the kloofs. Too many cattle feed upon the grass, and too many fires have burned it. Stand shod upon it, for it is coarse and sharp, and the stones cut under the feet. It is not kept or guarded, or cared for, it no longer keeps men, guards men, cares for men" (Paton, 34). The overwhelming senses of touch and vision are more than prevalent in this brief passage, with Paton perfectly conveying the atmosphere of rural South Africa in the 1940's. The reader gets a catholic impression of the arid climate as well as the deteriorated lands on which it rests. By including this in his novel, Alan Paton establishes a thorough setting, one of which the reader can fully understand for the remaining duration of Cry, The Beloved Country. Stylistic prose technique 2: DRAMATICIRONY In short, dramatic irony is in any given literary scenario when future actions can be accurately anticipated by the readers but not the characters. It often includes cliches and is used by authors wishing to give their audience insight that their characters do not yet have. Powerful dramatic irony is demonstrated in the scene: "– Shall I get your ticket for you, umfundisi? Then you need not lose your place in the line while I go to the ticket office... As though he has suddenly though of something he left the line, and walked to the corner, but there was no sign of the young man... – Where is the ticket office my friend? – You get your ticket on the bus. English Prose The Teaching of English Prose is a major concern of all schools and colleges, but in what shape is it and how is it poised, if at all, to take on new tasks critical to the development of awareness and understanding the young in an age of rapidly evolving information technology. Perhaps the most dramatic the development that has taken place in the field of English language teaching in the last 50 years has been the shift in its primary function.. from being mainly the native language of nations such as the UK or USA, to being mainly a global means of communication. The speakers of English whose L1 is another language already vastly out number native English speakers, and their number countries to grow. • 12. Prose In Defoe's Robinson Crusoe When Robinson Crusoe was first published in 1719, it was as an autobiography. Defoe had omitted his name from the work, and instead titled it as the writings of Crusoe himself. And people believed him. They believed in this outrageous, extraordinary adventure because it was written in such an ordinary manner. Defoe's style of writing is of the everyday man; a man simply trying to get all his thoughts down in one place. Prose is not what makes Robinson Crusoe such a literary masterpiece – the real genius of the novel is Defoe's ability to captivate his audience and fool them into believing that what they are reading is reality. There is no real structure, no logical end to Robinson Crusoe. In the words of Terry Eagleton, it is merely a case of "accumulating narrative."(Eagleton, 55) Defoe wrote rapidly; Robinson Crusoe is a result of the white heat of creativity. He does not fully describe his "emotional reaction to some terrifying event,"(Novak, 5) because he lives in a society wherein to show one's feelings is to show weakness. Such soliloquies are reserved for the stage. Moreover, Robinson Crusoe is not Shakespeare – it contains no "Immortal longings."(Shakespeare, 171) Crusoe is ambitious, yes, but even his most lofty ambitions reside within the confines of his society's ideology. Crusoe is a flawed character, but his flaws are not only the fatal hamartia of a Greek tragedy. He is greedy and selfish, but such "propensity of nature"(Defoe, 3) is portrayed in such a way that makes it seem acceptable because it was. Robinson Crusoe represents the zenith of western civilisation; he is the quintessential economic man. Any "evil influence"(Defoe, 17) which followed him was one society could not fault him for, as it most likely resided in them as Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 17. Academic Prose Vs. Writing Over the past eight weeks, this course has required me to write more academic prose than I have at any time outside of high school. While my job has required writing long documents, they are almost always persuasive or technical documents. I now reflect on my daily reading and writing in a different way as a result of this class. I can see how I have grown even from the first week to today. In each of the assignments below I can see my own growth and learning. When I read my first essay again for this assignment, I found myself picking it apart in a way I do not think I was capable of when it was initially written. A few lines and paragraphs have been rewritten to remove poorly worded sentences and choppy thoughts, but the whole subject and the way it was presented seems poor in hindsight. If I were asked to write the same assignment today I would not rewrite what was there, but start over entirely. The edits I made in this revision were in an effort to make it the best version of what was originally written, but it is not representative of what I can produce. Luckily, I had the opportunity to learn more about research and writing while participating in IDS101. Prior to this class, my last formal training in writing and English language skills was in a UConn cooperative class I took in high school. It was equivalent to entry–level college English class and was very demanding, but still not the same as this class. In that class, I was often tasked with writing material Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Because of the difficult obstacles and chaos by the world, the function or purpose of a hero is necessary. Many people depend on others, who are stronger or braver than themselves, when they are in need. Some people also need someone to look up to. Having someone to look up to will bring inspiration and motivation to them. Heroes also provide ease and reassurance to us, making us feel safe and protected at all times. We as people need heroes to guide, influence and inspire us. Heroes guide us to the greater things, influence us to be better, and inspire us to be courageous, brave, devoted, strong, and have justice. • 19. Definition Of Purpose The definition of purpose is this: something set up as an object or end to be attained. In comparison, a person's purpose is often their goal as well as their reason to do something all jumbled into one. I may be going out on a limb saying this, but I don't believe that there is a single person that lives without something that gives their life purpose and meaning. There are exactly three things in this world that give my life purpose. Two of those things are people. These are people that drive me to reach my goals. The third thing that gives my life purpose is ultimately the goal that I aim to reach in life. That goal would simply be to be better. Throughout history, there have been many experiments and works of literature showcasing the effect and various perspectives of being marginalized in society. For example, the prose essay written by Fang Gao titled, "What it means to be a 'model minority': voices of ethnic Koreans in Northeast China." In this article, he explains the different opinions and struggles that Koreans have, living in China. Gao suggests that Koreans and Asians share the same racials label: portrayed as a model minority that is primed for socioeconomic advancement and academic success (qtd. in Gao 55). This stereotype has a negative effect on both the Chinese and Korean population. The stereotype of a 'model minority' is making it challenging for Koreans to become their own individual ethnic group in China. Thus, making them feel unrecognized and marginalized into the chinese population. For instance, some people are proud to be a Korean in China because it often implies the struggle they went through, in able to cross the border of communist North Korea and making it into China.
