 Meteorology is a word derived from a latin
word meteorum which means atmospheric
phenomenon
 Meteorum comes from the Greek word
meteoron and consist of two words meta
meaning up and aoros meaning lifted and
the word logos means to study

 Meteorology can therefore be defined as a
branch of physical sciences, studying how
air motions involving energy and water
transformation processes in the Earth’s
atmosphere give rise to weather and
climate over various parts of the planet
earth.

 Physical meteorology is the study of
physical aspects of the atmosphere such
as rain ,thunderstorms, fronts, hurricane
and tornadoes etc
 Synoptic meteorology deals with the
analysis and forecast of large scale
weather systems

 Dynamic meteorology focuses on
theoretical laws of physics pertaining to
the atmosphere.
 Agriculture meteorology study the effects
of weather and climate on agriculture
 Hydrometeorology deals with hydrological
cycle and water budget s well as forecasts
and statistics of heavy rainfall

 Nuclear meteorology is the study of the
distribution of radioactive substances in
the atmosphere.
 Aviation meteorology study the effects of
weather on air navigation

 Aviation or Aeronautical Meteorology is
the branch of a Meteorology which deals
with the provision of Meteorological
Information for aviation operations

 Weather is the state of the atmosphere
regarding weather parameters such as
rainfall, sunshine, temperature, humidity,
clouds cover, wind direction and speed
in a given time and
space running from hours, days to
few months.

 The climate of a given area is the average
of meteorological parameters in that area
for a period of thirty years or more.
 A meteorological station has an enclosure
which houses instruments used to
measure Weather parameters.
 Weather data collected over a long period
of time then used to define the climate of a
place.

 Weather affects aviation activities at various
stages of operation
 To ensure the safe operations in all weather
situations, National Meteorological services
throughout the world are obliged by the law
to make meteorological observations and
forecasts and to establish and maintain
monitoring and warning systems in their
countries
