2. My athletics experience at Oxy was pure joy. I started out as a basketball player,
and then transitioned to football my junior year. And I played “noonball.” Every day
at lunchtime in Rush Gymnasium, there were pickup basketball games with students
and faculty. It got so competitive that we had to shoo away players who were
showing up from off campus.
Athletics helped fuel the great passion I have for Oxy. Another reason is Dean
Benjamin Culley. During my senior year, Dean Culley found out that I was sneaking
into the Union because I couldn’t afford more than one meal a day. But instead of
coming down on me, he helped me get a need-based grant so I could eat. It
dawned on me afterwards that the only reason that grant was available was be-
cause of gifts from alumni with a strong sense of stewardship.
Today, I’m still using the athletic facilities—running on Bill Henry Track, swimming
at Taylor Pool, or playing at the McKinnon Family Tennis Center. But with every
privilege comes a duty, and stewardship is part of it. We’ve been given so many
wonderful advantages here that were made possible by the generosity of others
whose names can be found across campus.
That’s why I’m president of the Tiger Club. The needs are great, whether upgrading
our facilities, improving our competitiveness, or enhancing the unique liberal arts
experience Oxy offers student-athletes. Please join me in supporting the Tiger
Club, and the new generations of student-athletes who will be writing their own
Oxy stories in the years ahead.

4. Help create more OXY stories. Tiger Club
dollars help Oxy level the playing field
against its SCIAC rivals, as schools such as
Chapman, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Cal
Lutheran, and Redlands invest more in their
athletic programs. The 21 teams that don
the orange and black play with Oxy pride
for the love of the game, and your gift can
be the catalyst for our student-athletes—
both men and women—to achieve their
very best, wherever their dreams may lead
them. Help Oxy Athletics take the next
step forward with your gift to Tiger Club.
