WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SIGNS A FANTASTIC
FOURSOME
Justin-Mychal White
Although the period after the season is technically considered to be the off-season, very few head
coaches take any time off in the quest of vastly improving his or her team. Virginia Union University
Head Women's Basketball Coach Barvenia Wooten-Cherry is no exception. Coming from the
Maryland area herself, Coach Wooten-Cherry looks to put her thumb print of what is heavily
referred to as the "DMV" (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) region.
Meet the new Lady Panther:
Taylor White will be entering Virginia Union as a junior on the court. The 5'11" forward hails from
Waldorf, MD, where she graduated from North Point High School with the class of 2012. Upon
graduation, White went on to play at The College of Southern Maryland, helping lead the team to
two solid seasons. White started 20 games in 2013-2014, and averaged 18.6 points per game,
shooting a solid 50% from the field. From the free throw line White shot above 55% and averages
more than 12 rebounds per game. White Ranks among the top 25 scorers in the National Junior
College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and 12th in rebounding.
Kerrigan Awkward was a triple threat at Oakland Mills High School, in Columbia, Maryland. In
addition to basketball, Awkward Ran the 200 meter dash and the 4 x 200 for the Oakland Mills track
team, and helped lead the charge on an undefeated Lady Scorpions volleyball team. Awkward is
coming off of an impressive season, earning her Honorable Mention on the 695Hoops All Metro
Squad in 2014. She built upon that performance during the 695Hoops Mid Atlantic Challenge,
where she walked away with the Most Valuable Player Award. Awkward, stands at 5'10" tall, the
incoming freshman plans to major in Biology upon entry to Virginia Union.
Alexis McKay heads to Virginia Union from Western Branch High School in Chesapeake, VA. Coming
off of a hot senior season, McKay earned MVP and All-Conference honors. At 5'10 the incoming
freshman helped lead Western Branch to a 16-5 overall record. McKay finished her high school
career with over 1,000 points. In addition McKay averaged 14.7 points per game, along with 11
rebounds per game. As a four-year varsity player, McKay has over 90 games of playing experience
under her belt, and an election to the All Tide Water Team.

Alexus Anderson rounds out the batch of new to come Lady Panthers set to hit the,,, court. Another
three sport athlete, Anderson runs track and plays all four years of varsity volleyball in addition to
basketball. Anderson helped lead the Lady Patriots to the state semifinals. Combining the speed
and agility of track, with the jumping abilities of volleyball, the time Anderson spends away from
basketball seems to have given her more stability for her overall game on the court.
When asked about the incoming Lady Panthers Assistant Coach Vicki Collier had this to say.
"I can say that we are very excited about our incoming freshmen. With Alexus Anderson, we're just excited
about her potential, next year will be a good year for her. Brining in Kerigan, she's just an overall athlete,
she hustles rebounds, she can shoot and dribble so we're looking for her to be a threat as well, and just
add to the chemistry of our team. With Taylor White, shes another post player as well, and she's very athletic
and she finishes very nicely above the basket, so bringing her skills from the junior college, helping our
current post players working with Lady, Tatum, and Lydia just giving our girls now the extra boost so we can
go ahead and get this CIAA Champion. And Alexis McKay is a pure shooter. Her height, size, and shooting
ability will just be another asset for us."
After reaching the CIAA Tournament Semifinals, in both of the last two years, 2013 and 2014, this foursome
comes to VUU as a welcomed addition in order to help get the Lady Panther over the hump.Collier Collier
