To Whom it May Concern:
I am delighted to be able to write a recommendation for BRIAN RANEY. I have known him for
over twenty years and he has always had my respect and admiration.
I came to know him first when he was an undergraduate at Northwestern University. At the
time, I managed the Technical Support Department for a statistical programming package named
SYSTAT. Our offices were near the Northwestern campus and we sometimes hired
undergraduates for part-time positions. Those undergraduates had to be smart, computer savvy
and industrious. Brian was all three and more. He was always punctual, willing to learn,
courteous to our customers and enthusiastic about getting the job done well.
Let me emphasize punctuality and courtesy a bit more. As a part time worker, we would
frequently set odd hour combinations and he would always accept the strange schedules with
good grace. Furthermore, I never heard him be rude to a caller even though, in those days, many
callers knew little about microcomputers and less about statistics.
After Brian graduated from Northwestern, we hired him as a full time employee. We were not
disappointed. He maintained the same level of service that he had established as a part-timer and
was a valuable member of our company.
Unfortunately for us, he found that there were greener pastures elsewhere and decided to move
on a year or two after he was hired. It was difficult to find people who could operate at his level
and I was very sorry to see him go.
In closing, let me say add that he is a genuinely nice man with a sense of humor and a strong
willingness to work with others.
