Editor's Notes

  1. Amina Houari w1558313 RyeoMyeong Park w1559152 Tuomas Jokiniemi w1552491 Patricia Soler w1509520 Hortence Yagmur w1533857
  2. The aims of this presentation: A broad view of the graduate labour market Introducing the marketing industry Growing and declining sectors within the marketing industry Highlighting the key employability skills required in the marketing field ( two sectors) A list of surprising facts
  3. The universities are helping students by helping them by teaching them the right skills they need to have for their future career i.e ( Business Practice module that is taught to enhance our skills as students and make us more aware of employers’ requirements). The University Of Westminster uses it’s own strategy written by David Shacklady that will be used by the university between 2015-2020. This strategy help the university by giving it a clear view on the employer’s demands, then the university with the help of this updated report work on shaping the students skills to meet the employer's’ expectations. Some universities are able to help students get employed after graduation by having connections and relationships with certain companies. Work experience in terms of employability will be explained further and more in-detail further in the presentation as a ‘skill’ by discussing it’s importance over the years and why it is very beneficial.
  4. The Graduate Labour market has been increasing since 2012, and in 2015 UK’s top employers (such as Aldi and McDonald’s) hired 3.3% more graduates than the previous year. This could be explained by how the number of school leavers heading to Higher Education has increased: → in 1989 only 19% of school leavers carried on to do HE → whereas in 2016 47% of them enrolled to a university (High Fliers report, 2016) As we can see: 57% of all graduate positions are offered within Accounting & Professional services, Public sector and Engineering & Industrial sectors. Public sector, as an example, has a major share of the graduate vacancies as it covers many sectors: providing medical, educational and justice services, not to mention the media roles by BBC (University of Kent, 2016) The High Fliers report (2016) predicted that there would be up to 7.5% increase in graduate vacancies this year, however an up to date AGR report (2016) argues that the graduate labour market has decreased by 8% in 2016 - unlike what was estimated by the High filers report. → One of the main reasons is the Government’s new Apprenticeship Levy that will come into force in April 2017. According to Allen the scheme will cause employers to change graduate vacancies into higher apprenticeship vacancies (Which have shown 13% increase).
  5. Does this have Affect on the salaries? As shown on the graph, between 2006 and 2010 median starting salaries for graduates were increasing as a result of UK inflation. The cost-of-living rose causing the increases (High Fliers). After the Great Recession ended in 2009 the graduate labour market started to show signs of improvement. Generous rises in salaries occurred as companies intended to keep up with the competition to attract top graduates (BBC). This leads us to a question: “Does the university matter?” A study by Chevalier and Conlon (2003) shows that the male Graduates from Russell Group institutions: meaning the prestigious universities such as Oxford and Cambridge, earn 4-12% more than their peers, who have graduated from modern universities such as Westminster. The research found out that the parents or academic achievements have no impact on this, which leaves us to the conclusion that it is purely because of the reputation of the institution. The current (2016) average salary - for graduates in full time employment is approximately £ 21,700 per year | according to the Higher Education Career Services Unit (HECSU). Next we are introducing employment within the Marketing industry.
  6. Since the marketing industry is about constantly adapting to consumers’ changes, naturally there are many growing sectors within the industry as they’re influenced by the growth and change of today’s world. AS AN EXAMPLE= DIGITAL MARKETING DYNAMIC AND DIVERSE industry, fast-changing environment that adapts to consumer habits which are constantly changing ( introduce into areas of growth = internet grows, virtuality and digital = more common etc) Since the marketing industry is about constantly adapting to consumers’ changes, naturally there are many growing sectors within the industry as they’re influenced by the growth and change of today’s world. AS AN EXAMPLE= DIGITAL MARKETING (Companies w/ Marketing Graduate Schemes: L’oreal, Cisco, Nissan, P&G etc)
  7. As a result of the growth in technology nowadays, one of the most growing sectors within the Marketing Industry is Digital Marketing. As consumers lean towards more digital preferences, marketers accustom to these changes. Marketers started seeing the Internet as a large marketing platform years ago for all kinds of consumers- easy way to target customers on their day-to-day activities SOCIAL MEDIA In the UK, almost 60% consumers use social media each week for an average of 52 minutes per day. (boston consulting group) Based on a survey by Salesforce: 75% report that social media marketing is generating ROI MOBILE MARKETING: 46% use mobile marketing (in comparison to 2014, where only 23% did) (4,00 marketers surveyed, 2016- salesforce) Digital Advertising: A mintel survey (2016) demonstrated that around 42% of consumers who browse on social media, watch YouTube videos and shop online (individually and collectively) actively notice display advertising and email marketing. As a result, these same consumers have admitted to ‘liking’ or ‘following’ companies on social media as well as visiting their websites (around 50%) = Shows that at least half of their consumers are digital/internet-oriented (Automation & CRM =critical in marketing strategies (sometimes used in conjunction) to maximise ROI & drive new customers = 48% of marketers surveyed have invested in this. )
  8. As a result, the amount of digital advertising spending by companies in the UK has been increasing annually notedly. In 2017, Expected to increase by 9%, 2017 and as an effect keep increasing steadily annually (8.5% and 7%).
  9. PR & Communications (growing sector) Article from PRweek magazine from 2014 from the International Communications Consultancy Organisation shows: PR industry globally grew 22 per cent between 2010 and 2012. Why? PR and Communications sector is growing. Companies are looking for PR specialists to engage them with their customers via social media. Social media tools, from Facebook to LinkedIn. Great way to network and to find employment. Businesses are sharing news to position their products or a brand through social media as a marketing strategy.
  10. Declining Report from The Advertising Association of UK adspend shows: Printed advertising is declining in 2016 Regional newsbrands by -5.9% National newsbrands by -5.4% Magazine brands by -4.5% Why? → New trend taking over old trends → Based on the (Consumer Trust report, 2015) it argues that the print adverts are less influential → For consumers It easier to receive digital adverts. (e-mails, pop ups ...etc)
