According to Maharshi Charak, it is the best in its category of citrus fruits and its consumption gives miraculous results in enhancing longevity, delaying aging process and hence in ‘Ayurveda’ it is said as ‘Amrit fal’ or ‘dhatri fal’.

There are two major types of Amla. The wild berry is
small and hard while the cultivated berry is large, soft
with lot of pulp. The tree of Indian gooseberry is of
medium height of around 20-25 feet high. Its trunk is
sinuous in shape and width around 5-9 feet. Fruits are
available from October to April.
3. HEALTH BENEFITS OF AMLA AND ITS MEDICINAL USAGE
Chemically, the Indian gooseberry is very rich in vitamin C. It
has 20 times more vitamin C as compared to orange. It has
Gallic acid, tannic acid, dextrin, sugar, albumin, cellulose and
calcium in rich quantity. The constituent present in pulp and
juice each 100 grams include 81.2 mg water, 0.5 mg protein,
0.1 mg fat, 0.02 mg phosphorus, 0.05 mg calcium, 1.2 mg
iron, 0.2 mg each 100 grams nicotinic acid. The tannin
percentage is 28 in fruit, 21 in branch, 8.9 in bark and 22
percent in leaves.
"To enhance longevity of life take ‘Amla powder at night with
ghee (clarified butter), honey or water which strengthens
organs and increases digestive efficiency and youthfulness.
Take 3-6 grams of `amla` powder and mix with its own juice
and take with one spoon `ghee` and 2 spoons of honey
followed by milk. Daily usage gives 80-years-old person
youthful happiness." - Acharya Balkrishna
5. HEALTH BENEFITS OF AMLA AND ITS MEDICINAL USAGE
Take 100 grams of ‘amla’ and mix with 10 grams of
jaggery to form a decoction. Drink it regularly though
each time in small quantity to get relief in aches, blood
biles, dysuria and other diseases. Fresh fruit jam, in the
morning empty stomach, if taken gives relief in biliary
diseases. If there is any cut of knife or any other sharp
object, apply fresh juice of Amla immediately, it gives
immense benefits.
The fruit is digestible, diuretic, blood purifier and helps in
diarrhoea, gonorrhoea, combustion, jaundice, pyrosis,
eruption, paleness, blood biles, piles, constipation,
indigestion, nausea, gout, cough and breath related
diseases.
6. HEALTH BENEFITS OF AMLA AND ITS USAGE
It enhances eye sight, makes semen strong. It is ‘tridosh
har’, which cures all the three ‘doshas’ (Vata pitta
kapha). It treats gastric troubles, biles and ‘kapha’. It
strengthens the heart. It is ‘vrishya’ (strengthens semen
and gives power) and also helps in impregnation. Indian
gooseberry (amla), harad (terminalia chebula), pippali
(long pepper) treat all types of fevers.
Take 20-25 grams of ‘amla’, crush and boil for two hours
in half kg of water. Filter it and put drops in the eyes,
thrice a week. This is very beneficial in eye related
diseases.
Applying the fluid which comes out from branch (when
cut), around the eyes removes the dark circles near the
eyes.
7. HEALTH BENEFITS OF AMLA AND ITS USAGE
For nose bleeding, crush jamun (syzygium cumini),
mango and amla and apply the paste on the
forehead. It immediately stops the nose bleeding as
a dam stops fl owing water. Take 10-20 grams of
`amla` juice, 2-3 grams of pepper and take the mix
with 2 spoons of honey, twice a day. It treats
hiccups.
