Patrick Moynagh
Thingssure have movedfastoverthe past sevenweeks. Justlike that,Ihave completedthe first
half of my SummerManagementInternship. Ihave seenandcompletedanimmense numberof
activitiesandprojectsinjustashort time at Sunrise Banks. Beingasit ismy thirdstraightsummerhere,
I was awardedthe opportunitytosample manydifferentdepartments atSunrise Banks. Some of these
departmentsincludeAudit,Credit,Human Resources,Marketing,andRisk;eachpresentedunique and
challengingtasks. Ihave alsobeenprivilegedtolistenandtalktosome of the managerstaskedwith
helpingthe Bankrunsmoothly. All of these experienceshave helpedaddsome insightintobankingand
managingpeople.
The majorityof my time spentat Sunrise thissummerhasbeenspentwiththe Audit
departmentandworkingalongside TammyPetersonthe Bank’sAuditDirector. Tammyisextremely
knowledgeable whenitcomestobankcompliance,internal auditprocedures,aswell asmanaging
people. Inmytime sofar withAudit,Irecentlycompleted awire transferauditwhere Imade sure the
bankand theircustomerswere compliantintheirtransactionsandhadthe necessarydocumentationto
authenticate the wireswithnoexceptions. Thistooksome time because of the enormousamountof
diverse customersthatutilize the Bank’sservices. Irecentlystartedandam still workingonaCDARS
and ICSauditreport, where the customerallowsthe bankto automate how theirmoneymovesor
“sweeps.” Withthis,Iam reviewingthe Bank’sandcustomer’scompliance withthe OCCandmaking
sure the correct agreements, signers, anddollaramountsare consistent. Ihave learnedmanypositive
thingsfromworkingwithTammy.
Part of employee obligationof workingatSunrise istocomplete varioustestscalled“BVS
Training”where Imustbe familiarwithcorrectbusinesspracticesandhow to maintainbusiness
relationships. Some of these examsinclude: Preventingidentitytheft, customerauthentication
procedure,code of conduct,privacy,informationsecurity,Whistleblowerfraudpolicy,andothers. Allof
these practicesare crucial to be aware of and understandinorderto successfullyoperate inabusiness
environment. Iam alsoreadinga bookcalled“LeadershipandThe One Minute Manager”where Iam
learningsome of the bestwaysto manage people andsome tendenciestouse incertainsituations. The
basicleadershipstylesaccordingtoKennethBlanchardthe authorare Directing,Coaching,Supporting,
and Delegating. A greatmanagermust know how to use each of these stylesona case-by-case basis
witheachof theiremployees,knowingthatdifferentemployeesneeddifferentstylesof leadershipin
orderto succeed. A person’sperformanceis predicatedontheircompetencewhichcanbe taughtand
theircommitmenttothe companyandtheirwork. This bookhas expandedmyinsightintowaysonhow
to properlyinfluencepeople todothingsthatyou wantthemto get done.
I recentlystartedanotherprojectconcerning CashManagementwhere Iamreviewingthe
bank’srevenue streamsandthe currentpricesthatwe offerour services. Goingalongwiththis,Ialso
am takinga lookat what our competitorsare offering andwhattheirpricesare in relationtoourown.
2. We wantour pricesto fall somewhere inthe middleof all of ourcompetitionwhile still tryingto
improve uponthe banksrevenuesinanywaypossible. So,betweenall of the Bank’sserviceswe offer,I
am creatingan excel spreadsheetwhere Iamimportingscenariosof waysthatwe can increase our
income while still stayingcompetitive inthe market. The spreadsheetinvolvesourcurrentprices, our
possible new prices, percentof feeswaived, aswell as ourpositionrelative tothe restof the market.
Ultimately, mygoal istopresentandclearlyillustrate the variouswaysthe Bankcan make more money
while still satisfyingtheircustomer’sneedsatafair price. Thisissomethingthatisa veryimportanttool
for all managersto have.
Maybe the mostfunpart of the summerhas beenworkingwiththe marketingdepartmentand
seeingall of the differentwaysthatSunrise triestoentice theircustomerstobankwithus. I have done
manyprojectswiththemincluding:ratingthe riskinessof ourvendors,helpproduce avideoshootfor
one of ourloan services, andSunrise’ssocial impactprofile andwaysthe bankhastriedto benefittheir
community. Sunrise Bankisanimpact investingcorporationthatis dedicatedtothe successof their
community. Ialsorecentlystartedmyownprojectwiththe approval of the two marketing
coordinators, where Iwill be presentingwaysthatthe Bank can bestleverage anawardwe receivedas
beingone of Minneapolis/St. Paul’sBestPlacestoWork in2015. With this,Iam placingthe awardon
the companywebsite forpotentialhirestosee, waystoincorporate the awardinthe interview process,
as well as writingaboutcompanyculture andgood managementpractices forcompanyleaderstofall
back on.
Finally,Ihave beentakingpartinsome importantcompanymeetings. These meetingsare
helpingme understandhowpeopleinthe workplace interactandhow theyworkthroughproblems
together. IattendedSunrise’sQSOCmeetingwhere everymanagergottogethertotalkabouthowthe
yearhas beengoingas well asstrategiestokeepemployeesworkingtowardstheirgoals. I have also
beenmeetingindividuallywithsome managerslearningmore abouttheirdepartments. Goingalong
withthis,we talkaboutimportantmanagementstrategiessuchas:waysto positivelyinfluence
employees,empowerthem,howtolearnfrommistakes,havinganopendoorpolicyandmany other
thingsimperativetobecomingagreatmanager. This maybe the mostbeneficial partof myinternship,
actuallylearninghowthese managersgottobe where theyare todaythroughtheirtrialsand
tribulations.
It has beenanexcitinglearningexperiencethese firstsevenweeksof myinternship. Ihave
reallyabsorbedalotof informationinthisshortamountof time atSunrise, andI cannot waitto see
whatmore I can learninthe nextseven weeks.
