• After bionic hand and bionic pancreas, British surgeons have
successfully performed the world's first bionic eye implant on an
80-year-old suffering from dry age-related macular degeneration,
the most common cause of sight loss in the developed world.The
Argus II bionic eye has now made Ray Flynn, from Audenshaw in
Manchester, make out the outline of people and objects even with
his eyes closed, proving that he is not using any of his remaining
natural vision to identify the shapes and outlines.
• The four-hour long surgery took place on June 16, and Flynn's
system was turned on for the first time on July 1. He was made to
look at a computer screen and identify black and white patterns.
• The patient's ability to correctly identify the direction of the lines
and the difference between the diagonal and horizontal lines shows
the Argus II device to be providing central visual function that did
not exist prior to the patient being implanted.

• The bionic eye provides electrical stimulation that bypasses the
defunct retinal cells and stimulates remaining viable cells inducing
visual perception in indi viduals with severe to profound retinitis
pigmentosa.
• The Argus II works by converting images captured by a miniature
video camera mounted on the patient's glasses into a series of
small electrical pulses, which are transmitted wirelessly to an array
of electrodes implanted on the surface of the retina.
• These pulses are intended to stimulate the retina's remaining cells,
resulting in the perception of patterns of light in the brain, which
the patient then learns to interpret, thereby regaining some visual
function.
• Paulo Stanga, ophthalmologist at the Manchester Royal Eye
Hospital says that initial screening tests have shown Flynn has
perception in his central vision for the first time in many years.

• Stanga believes that months of rehabilitation will improve
his vision significantly over the next few months.
• The news should bring a cheer to India which is home to
the world's largest number of blind people. Of the 37
million people across the globe who are blind, over 15
million are from India.Stanga added, “Flynn's progress is
truly remarkable. He is seeing the outline of people and
objects very effectively .
• “The first results of the trial are a total success. We are
initially limiting our study to the dry form of age-related
macular degeneration, and if successful, perhaps we will
subsequently look into recruiting patients with the
advanced and scarred wet form of AMD,“ Stanga said.
