For me, learning a language is a complicated process. It is different from learning other subjects. It involves a lot of practices and follow up. When I
talk about my personal experience, I would say that I have a rich experience in learning English as a second language. English was taught to me for
ten years starting from grade seven till graduation from university. After graduation, I felt that I should improve my language skills. Therefore, I did a
lot of efforts personally to increase my fluency. Until now I still learn the language. Indeed, learning a language takes a lifetime.
I started learning English as a second language when I was in first intermediate. I still remember my first classes and my first teachers. I remember that
my teachers changed frequently in the first year but all of them have much in common. All of them used grammar translation method. They used to
write bilingual lists of words on board, then we, as students, were asked to copy these lists and memorize them by heart. All teaching concentrated on
reading and writing skills, but there were no activities concentrating on speaking or listening. In addition, grammar rules were taught in that stage of
learning the language as mathematics equations, and we were asked to memorize the rules as we...show more content...
Of course, there are certain defects or gaps in my knowledge or ability to use the English language like using idioms and the appropriateness of some
vocabulary. Idioms have many connotations and denotations in the English language. Sometimes I use an idiom and I mean something, but the
connotations of the idiom means something else. Another gap of my knowledge of the language is the appropriateness of using certain vocabulary.
English language entails high sense of using the appropriate word for describing or narrating something. To my mind, I have not reached this point

Why I Want to Study English Essay
Why should anyone want to study English? Why not French or Spanish or even Mandarin Chinese? Is English so much more interesting than any other
language? Why spend time studying a language and not mathematics or science? Well, there are some very good reasons for that.
Never before, has a sound knowledge of languages been so important for finding a decent job. It is probably the first question they ask you if you
apply for one. Someone who knows different languages will be preferred to someone with a more limited command of languages. If a person applies
for a job in which it is very important to operate or programme a computer, he may have acquired that knowledge and those skills, but still someone
else who knows more languages will be...show more content...
At present, the world tries to take care of that problem by massively learning English as a second language, a choice that has its roots in the history of
this language. "It's too late to be studying Hebrew; it is more important to understand even the slang of today." Since the end of World War II, English
has been taught at most West–European schools, even at most schools in the world. English is predestined to be the international language par
excellence.
Communication has never been more important to the world than it is now. Just think of the Internet. When you surf the Internet you immediately
notice that the main language is English. Again we can see the influence of English in the world. Today, already half of the Europeans use English
as their first or second language. "English has borrowed from everywhere and now goes everywhere." English may not be the language with the
highest number of speakers in the world, but it is definitely the most important. You can reach a lot of people when you are able to communicate in
English. If you like to go working abroad, learning English is a very good preparation. There are so many large countries where English is the official
language, just think of Great Britain, Ireland, America, Canada... Even in our daily routine, English is all around. It already starts when you switch on
your PC and meet with English `commands, prompts, errors and messages' – the new type of computer slang.

Nowadays, English language has become one of the most important languages in the world in which we need to learn and to teach in order to
communicate effectively with others from all over the world. Al–Jarf (2008, cited in Alhaysony, 2012) indicates that about one million students are

Reflection On My English 101 Experience
Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and
done. However, you rarely get successful. The truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in the
middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my
essay, and identify my weaknesses. Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before taking this class, I
use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing,
and most importantly I struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to the deadline that I do not
have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it
holds the base of the whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for navigation to explain the
importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate
enough to learning in English 101 is the writing triangle. Even before outlining, the topic, purpose, and audience of the

Learning English as a Second Language Essay
English is an international language which is used officially all around the world. Anybody who wants to make connections with the world we live in
should learn English. I had English language classes in my secondary and high school years. I also took some private English learning courses
throughout summers in my country, Turkey. However, I could not improve my English effectively as all Turkish students in Turkey. I fully agree that
English will be learned most efficiently in the boundaries of an English–speaking country not in the home country because of some cases. Therefore, I
came here, USA, to learn English better after graduation from my university. First, English is dealt with all the time while staying in an

Neither was I able to get their points, nor could they understand me. The reasons were that my Turkish English teachers are not the experts in
pronunciation and there is no class focusing on speaking at state schools in Turkey. An experiment was performed by Major et al. about speaking and
listening problems for international people. Four groups of one hundred listeners, whose native languages were Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, and
American English, heard brief lectures presented in English by speakers with different native languages and answered questions based on the
lectures. The results indicated that both native and nonnative listeners scored significantly lower on listening comprehension tests when they
listened to nonnative speakers of English, and Chinese group scored significantly lower when listening to speakers who shared their native
language. Only Spanish group did well when they listened to their native speaker (174). This experiment showed that learning English from a
nonnative speaker may cause troubles in both listening and speaking parts of English. Additionally, I lacked of ability on word choice for the first
couple of months in the USA. For example, I was using adjective "too" for positive circumstances " instead of "very" or "so", and I used to say

How I Can Learn English Essay
During the past few years, I discovered some affectable thing about how I can learn English. In my study journey, I started to learn English when I
first attend to school. I have been learning English for my whole learning life, but I was not familiar in English when I was studying in Hong Kong.
After I came to America and started to attend school here, I discovered that if I want to be accustomed to English, I had to change my mindset and
value. When I was in elementary school at Hong Kong, I was disgusted to learn English because I was a fixed mindset student. According to "The
Perils and Promises of Praise", written by Carol S. Dweck, fixed mindset students would escape from the challenges or problems, instead of overcome
it.(p.1–2) During elementary school, I always got the terrible grades on my English quizzes, tests, and dications. In addition, I didn't understand most
of the grammars and vocabularies that the teachers taught me during the lessons. Moreover, I was rarely practice English or review them before the
quizzes or the tests. Because of those reasons, my English grades became worse and worse. During elementary school and middle school, I almost failed
all of the English tests which made me felt frustrated and disgusted to learn English. When I just arrived in America and attended to school, I was still
afraid to communicate with people in English because my English was very bad. I don't hate English as much as I was in Hong Kong because I

What I Learned In My English Class
Throughout my time in Honors English, I have learned many valuable things. It is hard to learn new concepts in an English class, because it is a
class that everyone has since starting school. The group of kids that I attend this class with are not easy to handle, and we often upset teachers with
our rude and opinionated comments. Our English class has been geared toward opening up to others and finding ourselves. We have learned a lot
about our peers and ourselves throughout this semester, and we have learned about poetry, literature, and other topics. I have learned a lot about my
classmates, myself, and I found my new favorite book, To Kill A Mockingbird. Ms. Hogan assigned us an biography, and we picked a peer that we

By allowing the ELL students to use their native and their second language in reading, and writing it will make them move along this new process.
Reading and writing experience should be context related and meaningful in order for them to be effective in their learning, even though, they can
transfer the literacy skills that they have obtained in their native language towards their second language while they are exposed to more learning
experiences.
Many challenges are faced by the ELL students and their families by being in a new environment, such as a new language, school, food, beliefs, life
style, etc., where they feel that they need to deviate from their home language and their culture, absolutely not, they need to be conceited, revered,
treasured. In this matter, our role as educators is to be prepared to work effectively with families (Katz & Bauch, n.d., p. 189), in providing the effective
support, and assistant with the full understanding of the new changes in their new environments. On the other hand, social cultural pressure could be
increased if students do not have another native individual to relate to; students need to have a teacher who will assist and guide them in learning new
a language; without allowing them to lose their cultural identity.

My Learning English
A language is essential in our lives because of its convenience to communicate with others. Learning them, however, is like trying to grasp something
that is almost beyond one's reach. Although I can fluently speak three languages and am even studying one more new language, I never considered
this to be an easy process because it is very time–consuming and hard to fully understand. From this experience, it is safe to say that it is almost
impossible to become proficient in languages in a short amount of time, while it sometimes depends on the learner's age, effort, capabilities, and
available time. This is a story of how I learned English. Even now, I still clearly remember how excited and nervous at the same time to travel to
the United States. As I entered the airport in South Korea, I started to imagine what it would be like to be living in America. Unfortunately,
however, there was also a part of me imagining a bunch of devious white people holding guns in their hands and waiting in the shade to shoot
innocent pedestrians. In fact, I was so terrified to get shot by someone. To calm myself down and relax, I tried to remember what my friends,
teachers, and relatives had said to me on the way. "You will study hard and do great things in the U.S.!" "You are meant to become a successful
person over there in the future!" I kept these words in my mind as I entered the gate to the first travel ever in a country in the Western world, where

  • 2. For me, learning a language is a complicated process. It is different from learning other subjects. It involves a lot of practices and follow up. When I talk about my personal experience, I would say that I have a rich experience in learning English as a second language. English was taught to me for ten years starting from grade seven till graduation from university. After graduation, I felt that I should improve my language skills. Therefore, I did a lot of efforts personally to increase my fluency. Until now I still learn the language. Indeed, learning a language takes a lifetime. I started learning English as a second language when I was in first intermediate. I still remember my first classes and my first teachers. I remember that my teachers changed frequently in the first year but all of them have much in common. All of them used grammar translation method. They used to write bilingual lists of words on board, then we, as students, were asked to copy these lists and memorize them by heart. All teaching concentrated on reading and writing skills, but there were no activities concentrating on speaking or listening. In addition, grammar rules were taught in that stage of learning the language as mathematics equations, and we were asked to memorize the rules as we...show more content... Of course, there are certain defects or gaps in my knowledge or ability to use the English language like using idioms and the appropriateness of some vocabulary. Idioms have many connotations and denotations in the English language. Sometimes I use an idiom and I mean something, but the connotations of the idiom means something else. Another gap of my knowledge of the language is the appropriateness of using certain vocabulary. English language entails high sense of using the appropriate word for describing or narrating something. To my mind, I have not reached this point Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Why I Want to Study English Essay Why should anyone want to study English? Why not French or Spanish or even Mandarin Chinese? Is English so much more interesting than any other language? Why spend time studying a language and not mathematics or science? Well, there are some very good reasons for that. Never before, has a sound knowledge of languages been so important for finding a decent job. It is probably the first question they ask you if you apply for one. Someone who knows different languages will be preferred to someone with a more limited command of languages. If a person applies for a job in which it is very important to operate or programme a computer, he may have acquired that knowledge and those skills, but still someone else who knows more languages will be...show more content... At present, the world tries to take care of that problem by massively learning English as a second language, a choice that has its roots in the history of this language. "It's too late to be studying Hebrew; it is more important to understand even the slang of today." Since the end of World War II, English has been taught at most West–European schools, even at most schools in the world. English is predestined to be the international language par excellence. Communication has never been more important to the world than it is now. Just think of the Internet. When you surf the Internet you immediately notice that the main language is English. Again we can see the influence of English in the world. Today, already half of the Europeans use English as their first or second language. "English has borrowed from everywhere and now goes everywhere." English may not be the language with the highest number of speakers in the world, but it is definitely the most important. You can reach a lot of people when you are able to communicate in English. If you like to go working abroad, learning English is a very good preparation. There are so many large countries where English is the official language, just think of Great Britain, Ireland, America, Canada... Even in our daily routine, English is all around. It already starts when you switch on your PC and meet with English `commands, prompts, errors and messages' – the new type of computer slang. English is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Nowadays, English language has become one of the most important languages in the world in which we need to learn and to teach in order to communicate effectively with others from all over the world. Al–Jarf (2008, cited in Alhaysony, 2012) indicates that about one million students are learning English worldwide, which highlighted the importance of English teaching and learning for academic purposes. Graddol (2000) states that English Language "is the main language of books, newspapers, airports and air traffic control, international business and academic references, science, technology, diplomacy, sport, international competitions and advertising". Accordingly, we can say that it is important for students to learn English language effectively to achieve a good level which will help them to success in the relevant fields that depend on their good use of English language. Al–Zuhairi (2008) indicates that the achievement of the Saudi students in English is low, and one of the most important reasons of this drop is the textbook in which they were taught through in intermediate and secondary schools. • 5. Reflection On My English 101 Experience Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses. Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for navigation to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in English 101 is the writing triangle. • 8. Learning English as a Second Language Essay English is an international language which is used officially all around the world. Anybody who wants to make connections with the world we live in should learn English. I had English language classes in my secondary and high school years. I also took some private English learning courses throughout summers in my country, Turkey. However, I could not improve my English effectively as all Turkish students in Turkey. I fully agree that English will be learned most efficiently in the boundaries of an English–speaking country not in the home country because of some cases. Therefore, I came here, USA, to learn English better after graduation from my university. First, English is dealt with all the time while staying in an English–speaking...show more content... Neither was I able to get their points, nor could they understand me. The reasons were that my Turkish English teachers are not the experts in pronunciation and there is no class focusing on speaking at state schools in Turkey. An experiment was performed by Major et al. about speaking and listening problems for international people. Four groups of one hundred listeners, whose native languages were Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, and American English, heard brief lectures presented in English by speakers with different native languages and answered questions based on the lectures. The results indicated that both native and nonnative listeners scored significantly lower on listening comprehension tests when they listened to nonnative speakers of English, and Chinese group scored significantly lower when listening to speakers who shared their native language. Only Spanish group did well when they listened to their native speaker (174). This experiment showed that learning English from a nonnative speaker may cause troubles in both listening and speaking parts of English. Additionally, I lacked of ability on word choice for the first couple of months in the USA. For example, I was using adjective "too" for positive circumstances " instead of "very" or "so", and I used to say "according to me" instead of "in my Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. How I Can Learn English Essay During the past few years, I discovered some affectable thing about how I can learn English. In my study journey, I started to learn English when I first attend to school. I have been learning English for my whole learning life, but I was not familiar in English when I was studying in Hong Kong. After I came to America and started to attend school here, I discovered that if I want to be accustomed to English, I had to change my mindset and value. When I was in elementary school at Hong Kong, I was disgusted to learn English because I was a fixed mindset student. According to "The Perils and Promises of Praise", written by Carol S. Dweck, fixed mindset students would escape from the challenges or problems, instead of overcome it.(p.1–2) During elementary school, I always got the terrible grades on my English quizzes, tests, and dications. In addition, I didn't understand most of the grammars and vocabularies that the teachers taught me during the lessons. Moreover, I was rarely practice English or review them before the quizzes or the tests. Because of those reasons, my English grades became worse and worse. During elementary school and middle school, I almost failed all of the English tests which made me felt frustrated and disgusted to learn English. When I just arrived in America and attended to school, I was still afraid to communicate with people in English because my English was very bad. I don't hate English as much as I was in Hong Kong because I understood Get more content on HelpWriting.net

It is hard to learn new concepts in an English class, because it is a class that everyone has since starting school. The group of kids that I attend this class with are not easy to handle, and we often upset teachers with our rude and opinionated comments. Our English class has been geared toward opening up to others and finding ourselves. We have learned a lot about our peers and ourselves throughout this semester, and we have learned about poetry, literature, and other topics. I have learned a lot about my classmates, myself, and I found my new favorite book, To Kill A Mockingbird.
