A global conservation,

leader in sustainability
initiatives combines exploration
and research with a global
media presence to inspire,
illuminate, and teach. This
unique organization combines
for-profit and not-for-profit
business lines along with the
diverse financial reporting and
analysis needs of each.
Burdened with a rigid ledger
system ill-suited for
dimensional analysis this
organization was challenged
with streamlining and
enhancing their Reporting and
Consolidation capabilities.
Their existing model was
burdened with hard-coded
reporting links to the general
ledger and a general ledger
account string that used
multiple fields for duplicate
purposes. In an attempt to get
multi-dimensional reporting
from their ERP, additional detail
was coded into the account
string of the general ledger.
This led to inconsistent
collection of dimensional detail.
An example is an effort to
collect geographic data that
was sometimes embedded in
account and sometimes in
product codes. As a result
reports were completely hard-
Situation:
coded and very difficult to
maintain when new detail
was added.
Hundreds of reports were
generated monthly and
stored as hardcopies offline
for future analysis. Changes
to the underlying data were
not reflected in these reports
creating a data integrity gap.
In addition, report creation,
maintenance, and access was
restricted to the
Consolidation Group only,
burdening that group with all
data requests, most of which
occurred during the month
end close process.
The organization was also
faced with the internal
challenge of fluid reporting
structures with a need to
both maintain historical
results as well as establish
flexibility to enable new,
alternative structures.
While global in reach, the
organization maintained
most financial reporting in US
currency. Looking to the
future, there was a desire to
expand the reporting
capability to foreign
currencies as well as the
analytical FX reporting that
accompanies it.
Cash Flow and KPI reporting
and Analytics were manual in
nature requiring an excessive
amount of time to develop
and modify as data changed
throughout the close.
Lastly, congruent to
addressing the financial
reporting needs of the
organization was the desire to
align the design of the ERP
Chart of Accounts to support
future reporting.

A solution was designed
leveraging Hyperion Financial
Management (HFM),
Financial Reporting (FR), and
Financial Data Quality
Management (FDQM).
An HFM solution was
designed to provide true
multi-dimensional
capabilities for reporting.
Separate dimensions were
created for each of the major
data points the client
required for producing
financial reports. FDQM was
implemented to decompose
the multiple-use general
ledger account string into
separate dimensions and to
facilitate data loading for
both Actuals and Planning
data.
A detailed review and partial
redesign of the chart of
accounts was performed
during the initial
Requirements and Design
phases to ensure proper
alignment to future reporting
an analytic standards.
SOLUTION:
Financial Reporting was
implemented to create a
centralized repository of
dynamic and fully formatted
reports available on-demand,
eliminating the need to store
hundreds of static reports off-
line each month.
Report templates were created
in FR and made available to all
users of the system creating a
standardized view of the
business for all stakeholders.
The SmartView Office add-in
was distributed empowering
all users to create their own
ad-hoc reports.
HFM dimensionality and
hierarchical capability were
integrated to create a fluid
reporting structure that is
extensible and flexible.
Multiple hierarchies were
created for several dimensions
enabling multiple views of
operations.
The solution utilizes foreign
currency in conjunction with
HFM translation capabilities to
provide reporting in both
local currency and USD. The
solution also provides the
capability to analyze
operations by removing the
effects of foreign currency.
The Hyperion solution chart
of accounts serves as the
basis for future changes to
the ERP chart of accounts.

The solution streamlined
the current consolidation
process with consistent
reporting production
across business lines and
departments. This
included automation of
the financial statements,
meeting legal reporting
requirements, and
moving from the batch
driven reporting system
to self-service and on-
demand reporting. This
simplified the closing
process and transferred
analytical reporting out of
the general ledger and
into the Hyperion suite.
HFM became the prime
source of analytical
reporting with additional
detail available using
general ledger drill-
through capabilities.
The implementation of
FDQM enabled the

fields in the ERP Chart of
Accounts into separate
dimensions within the
HFM solution that
delivered true multi-
dimensional reporting.
This resolved one of the
prime frustrations
experienced by the client
when analyzing financial
reports.
Leveraging the rules
engine in HFM enabled
near automatic
production of cash flow
statements and financial
statement analytics that
could be produced on
demand at multiple levels
of detail at any point
during the close.
Previously cash flow
statements were created
in total, off-line, by one
individual and only as a
last step in the close
process.
Report production and
maintenance, previously
the sole responsibility of
the Consolidation
Reporting Group, has
been de-centralized with
the use of the SmartView
add-in enabling all users
to produce their own
customized reports as
necessary. Standard
reports used across the
organization require less
effort to maintain and are
designed to dynamically
leverage the hierarchical
structure of HFM.

Their focus is on

design, build, and
maintain financial
