I completed a summer practicum internship at Sundance, Fort Worth, which is an outpatient
psychiatric hospital for children and adolescents 5-18 years old. I gained practical experience
in counseling and therapeutic techniques, as well as training in the administrative and
functional tasks required for a multidisciplinary setting such as this.
Gained 251 hours of experience in this setting (162 direct hours); at least 1 hour of direct
supervision each week
Completed 4-week rotations across 4 age groups (5-8 years, 9-12 years, 13-15 years, 16-18
years)
Led 7 skills group activities, which focused on psychoeducation and promoting effective
coping skills for clients to confront and manage their various mental health diagnoses
Co-led group process sessions with licensed therapists daily
Observed individual therapy sessions, as well as family sessions for one day of each week
Received training on the development of client treatment plans and suicide/homicide risk
assessments; spent 3-5 hours per week developing these while at this site

Gained practical experience with assessment, intervention, consultation, counseling, and
report writing.

The placement was at two elementary schools, and one primary school. M. G. Ellis Primary
School consists of classrooms for Fort Worth ISD students in Pre-K, Kindergarten, as well as
the district’s Headstart Program and Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities
(PPCD).
The majority of this experience took place at Manuel Jara Elementary School, which is a
bilingual campus.

4. • Served as an active member of this research team, which consisted of graduate- and
undergraduate-level students and focused primarily on physical health problems that resulted
from chronic victimization in adolescence
• Gained experience with EEG – placing the cap/electrodes/etc., collecting baseline and
experimental data, and coding/cleaning up the data for “noise” (i.e., that associated with the
participant sneezing, coughing, etc.)
• Participated in an ongoing research study by running participants in an experiment with middle-
school-aged children; also took part in the debriefing with participants, transcribing video-
recordings of participants performing a social stress test (giving a speech in front of strangers),
entering data into excel, coding data, and collecting saliva samples to be examined for cortisol
levels
