3. What is Glassine?
Glassine is a pulp-based material with
a distinct look and feel.
Because of its unique qualities, it has been confused for wax
paper, parchment, plastic, and other types of materials.
It doesn’t feel quite like regular paper but is commonly used
in the food industry because it is grease-resistant and does
an excellent job at elevating the experience of baked goods
and other treats.
4. How is
Glassine Made?
Glassine paper is made from 100% wood pulp and
is manufactured through a unique process called
supercalendering.
Unlike the manufacturing of other paper materials, the lignin
need to be fully separated during the pulping process to
achieve its unique look and feel.
Once dried after the slurry is treated, it is pressed between
two pressure cylinders known as calendars.
The super calendering processed presses the paper sheet
multiple times breaking down the capillaries to give it higher
density, low porosity and a glossy finish.
5. The Benefits
of Glassine
Glassine paper is:
• Acid-free
• PH neutral
• Resistant to moisture and grease
Glassine paper is recyclable, biodegradable and does not
require a wax coating or laminate to provide a moisture and
grease barrier making it versatile and convenient.
It also has high density and thickness, which means it has
more tensile strength, folding endurance, and stiffness than
other thin paper materials on the market.
6. The Drawbacks
of Glassine
Printing on glassine paper has proven to be challenging.
The non-porous surface does not absorb ink making drying
times longer and the risk of smudging higher.
However, despite this drawback, glassine paper can still
benefit from offset and digital printing.
7. Packaging Food
Products
Glassine envelopes are designed to
complement baked goods, treats and
sweets.
They also double as a great way to display baked goods for
sale and convenient packing.
Since glassine uses no chemical processes, it is 100% food
safe and durable while its grease resistant properties keep
the packaging sleek so customers can enjoy your products
on the go.
8. Packaging
Jewelry
The sleek, semi-translucent finish of glassine paper also
offers a classy packaging option for jewelry.
Glassine envelopes are discrete enough to package jewelry
for gifts and are the perfect size for earrings, bracelets,
pendants or necklaces.
The convenient envelope design allows for easy packaging
capabilities and a high end unwrapping experience.
9. Typically used within boxes to protect apparel from damage,
glassine sheets and bags offer a classy finish to products
like clothing and accessories.
It is also a great addition to eCommerce products as it
elevates and adds an extra layer to the unboxing experience
and creates anticipation for products thanks to it’s semi-
translucent, glossy finish.
