2. Andrew Goodwin’s Theory
• Based on 8 main princables:
1. Links between lyrics and visuals
2. Links between music and visuals
(Contradicting, Amplification
and complimentary)
3. Genre characteristics
4. Intertextual reference
5. Notion of looking
(representation of women)
6. Voyeurism (direct gaze, other
people looking at artist, insight
into artist life, mirrors and
screens)
7. Demands of the record label
8. Performance, narrative and
concept based videos
• I will relate this theory directly
with the song by No Doubt called
Don’t Speak.
• The group are an American Rock
band with a fusion of ska punk,
pop rock and punk rock. They
changed their image slightly by
adding an Jamaican/ Reggae.
3. Lyrics and Visuals
• The lyrics in the song resemble the relationship between 2
people which are going through a break up, however when
you watch the video, the 2 parties in the relation ship are lead
singer Gwen Stafani and the rest of the band. Gwen becomes
main priority in the bands image the other band members are
getting left behind and don’t like it. The songs lyrics represent
how the singer knows how they feel she doesn’t need them to
tell her that.
4. Genre Characteristics
• With rock music the conventions are to have many shots of
the instruments. As No Doubt are a rock band in the video
there are many shots off all the artists in the band either
singing or playing their instruments. There’s part’s of the
video where it contains actual footage of the band performing
at one of their concerts. They use their whole bodies in order
to put on a show for their fans, for example head banging and
jumping up and down.
5. Notion of looking and voyeurism
• There are many close up shots within the
video where the band members are giving
Gwen Stefani dirty looks to represent their
anger and jealousy they have for her. This
shows to the viewer what the lyrics really do
represent, rather than the viewer just thinking
the song is part of a break up.
6. Demands of the record label
• The video has a section where the whole band go on a photo
shoot for a magazine company and as they’re all having fun
get photographed the directors ask for the other band
members to leave and ask for Stefani to stay. The company
end up only using the single shot of Gwen on her own for the
front cover of their issue. This could be representative of what
actually happened in real life with No Doubts record label.
7. Performance, narrative and concept
• Don’t Speak is heavily performance based as for the duration
of the music video the band are performing the song and the
viewer see’s this happening. However, there is an element of
narrative as they have the story through the video being that
the band are splitting due to Gwen Stefani becoming the main
attraction of the band.
