UPK, or Universal Pre-Kindergarten, is a
program funded through a non-competitive grant
from the New York State Department of Education.
There is no cost to parents for this program.
The Walton Central School District should
receive this grant each year, based on state funding.
The purpose of UPK is to provide a developmentally
appropriate pre-school program that emphasizes
literacy and language, basic math concepts, and
physical, personal, and social development. Young
learners need support and encouragement in order
to learn the responsibilities of being part of a group.
The Walton UPK program prepares students with
the foundational skills needed for success with the
Kindergarten Common Core Curriculum. The
UPK program provides a literacy rich environment,
supplemented with math, science, social skills and
the arts.
Our UPK teacher and teacher aide model and
reinforce appropriate skills, teach students how to
respect others and seek out each child’s strengths,
needs and interests in order to provide your child
with an active and engaging curriculum each day.
What is UPK?
Submit the enclosed UPK lottery application to
the Townsend Elementary office by May 1, 2015.
Guidelines for your application:
• You child must be four years old, or turn four
by December 1, 2015. If your child is eligible
for kindergarten, he or she is not eligible for
UPK.
• Your child must be a resident of the Walton
Central School District.
• You must be able to transport your child from
school if he or she is in the AM program and
transport your child to school if he or she is in
the PM program. Buses are available for eligible
students either to school (for the AM students)
or from school (for the PM students). Three
year olds are not allowed to ride, until they turn
four.
• You agree to participate in the random lottery
selection process.
• You may not request AM or PM, though we do
ask your preference.
• Your child should be able to use the bathroom
with minimal assistance.
How do I apply?
Each application is numbered and numbers are
selected at random to fill available seats. If a se-
lected student cannot attend, or cannot make a
commitment to attend, additional numbers will be
drawn until all seats are filled.
