UTI was formed in 1963 during a period of political and economic uncertainty in India to channelize community savings into the equity market and support industrial growth. UTI operates under government provisions as a non-profit organization with the chairman appointed by India. The primary objectives are to give small savers an opportunity to benefit from equity markets and promote small savings. UTI's powers include selling units nationwide, mobilizing small savings for industry, and providing liquidity to unit holders.

UTI came into existence.
In 1963, during a period marked by great political and
economic uncertainty in India.
With war, on the border and economic turmoil that depressed
the financial market.
The company and the entrepreneur were formed difficult to access
the equity market.
To channelize saving of the community into equity market to make
them available for the companies speed up the process of industrial
growth, UTI was organized.
