We developed a digital system for gait analysis based on electrogoniometric techniques,
which uses digital RF for the data transfer and a DSP for processing and displaying them.
The system has three main parts : a portable transmitter, a receiver and an interface to the
operator (operating system).
The transmitter digitises 8 time-multiplexed channels using an 8-bit resolution ADC (at
1OOHz), each one is a filtered electrogoniometric signal. (The electrogoniometers are
attached to 4 joints in each of the lower limbs: hip, knee, anlde and the phalanx-
metatarsian.) After digitisation, the data are added correction and parity bits and coded for
PWM, to be sent to the receiver.
The receiver has two components, the receiver circuitry itself andan interface to a personal
computer. The receiver circuit is an external tuned amplifier which conditions the data to
be read by a PC add-on card, based on a floating-point DSP TMS320C30, whose task is to
compute all of the biomechanical parameters and send them to the PC internal RAM, to be
displaied.
Among this parameters are joint angles as well as cycle time, step times, stride time, single-
and double-limb support time and, swing and stance ratios. This computations are real time
plotted on a computer screen based on the user's selection. Such plots migth be
automatically analysed for detecting pathological cases and gait abnormalities, by means of
genetic algorithms or evolutive systems.
The main advantage this work has over other similar systems is the freedom of movement
the patient has, due to the fact of being unplugged from any static system. Furthermore, the
cost of the sensing technique is lesser than that of IR-digitising based systems.
Additionaly, goniometry gives an excelent analog signal, ideal for digitisation and further
post-processing.
The power disipation ofthe transmitter is only 12mW, with a single battery lasting 30 hours
of continuous use, and it is pocket-sized (5 x 7 x 2cm ) (H x L x W.) It weights l lüg
including batteries and has a working range of 20m.
