WHO KILLED ALASKA
#18 - MIRROR MEMORIA PART 3
written by
Cameron Cooper LeBrun
DENVER [narrator]
You’re listening to part 3 of the four-part season finale. This episode contains significant
depictions of head trauma and brain damage. Before we get started, I thought you should know
that even when this episode gets scary, you are still safe. Check the bottom of the description for
a full list of content warnings. And if you get scared, just imagine we’re all holding hands.
2
DENVER [narrator]
In the previous episode, Bobby, Jeremy, and I decided to look for security footage. By early
morning, I’ve found hospital security footage from the night of Alaska’s death.
SECURITY OFFICE.
DENVER
Oh gosh. Bobby, you can look away.
BOBBY
Thank you.
DENVER [narrator]
In the video, an absolute stranger attacks Alaska. It’s somebody I’ve never seen before. It’s
hospital staff.
BOBBY
I’ll find out who that is.
DENVER
No. I’ll do it. I can do it faster.
DENVER [narrator]
And Jeremy’s standing rangy in the doorway.
LOGAN
Who was that?
DENVER [narrator]
I don’t think I can tell you what Jeremy looks like in this moment. There’s no way to describe it.
3
DENVER
Are we all okay?
BOBBY
I don’t think it matters.
Denver sighs.
Denver moves and clicks the computer mouse around.
DENVER
I’ll bring us back to the live security feed and then we can go.
LOGAN
Emma, please go fuck off.
EMMA
I’m being helpful right now.
BOBBY (in the background)
Is there a way to send me the video?
DENVER (in the background)
I have it on Drive.
BOBBY (in the background)
Alright. Alright. Perfect.
4
DENVER [narrator]
If you’re wondering about this conversation between Jeremy and Emma— no, I’m not catching
any of it. Emma’s hiding and only Jeremy seems to be aware of her. The microphone is picking it
up, but Bobby and I are preoccupied.
LOGAN
I thought you’re into Denver. What happened to “I’d follow his rump to the ends of this earth?”
EMMA
There’s a little more going on right now! And I was joking!
DENVER [narrator]
Then, in the corner of my eye, I catch a glint. In one of the bottom right video feeds, the ceiling
lights are reflecting on a pair of goggles and it’s Curtis. It’s Boo fucking Curtis waddling around
through a hallway with Jo close behind.
DENVER
That’s Boo!
BOBBY
Wait. Where?
DENVER
He’s going inside somebody else’s room. Oh, god. I’ll check where this is—
Denver is clicking and moving the mouse again.
5
DENVER
You’d think they’d label these!
BOBBY
Jo’s friends are over here.
DENVER
Oh, yeah, what’re they… doing?
DENVER [narrator]
And now we’ve got Dylan and Dan too. They’re strolling around in an upper-right-hand video
feed. So I ask Bobby for a favor.
DENVER
Could you text Jo for me?
BOBBY
Sure. I mean, what should I say?
DENVER
Have her— have her ask Boo if Dylan and Dan gave him something to eat.
BOBBY
Why?
DENVER
Because they’re carrying around a brown paper bag and I wanna know what’s in it. 90% of my
job is asking boring questions.
6
DENVER [narrator]
I can’t figure out how to find the room Boo’s in, but I also take a couple minutes to monitor
Dylan and Dan along the way. I try to figure out what they’re doing, but they’re just standing
around in the hallway. Like they don’t have anything to do. So— why are they here?
BOBBY
Something’s happening.
DENVER [narrator]
I look to the room Boo went into. Hospital security is rushing inside. A member of medical staff
is hanging outside the open doorway and trying to lean over enough to get a good look. Soon
we’ll hear about Boo’s second head injury. Boo’s being attacked by law enforcement. And in the
scuffle, his head is banged against a wall.
I don’t have time to panic. Instead, I work. I find the name of the woman who attempted
to assault Alaska in our CCTV footage. This is what my job is supposed to be— typing search
terms into my laptop. I find her name. It’s Kenzie Joyce.
Then Boo wakes up.
7
HOSPITAL ROOM.
EMMA
But, there was a staff member that attacked Alaska while he was in the hospital! Her name was
Kenzie Joyce! I think she was an Outsider!
BOO
No no no! No no no!
JO
Boo! Boo, can you hear us? Alaska was attacked by two Outsiders!
DENVER [narrator]
We call them.
OUTSIDE THE HOSPITAL.
DENVER
Is Boo screaming?
JO [speaker phone]
He wants to go to the— to the bottom of the lake. The lake in Stump Town.
LOGAN
Why?
JO [speaker phone]
(shaky) Because Alaska was attacked by two Outsiders and his psychic said a while ago that
Outsiders come from the bottom of that lake so now he wants answers. But I told him no we’re
not doing that.
8
DENVER [narrator]
I remind myself that today could be difficult. Today could be trying. And I’m prepared to be
scared and overwhelmed. Everything is worth a try, and a try is worth your confidence.
9
THEME SONG STARTS
DENVER [narrator]
Welcome to Who Killed Alaska: Detective Files.
BOO
This is Who Killed Alaska: The Adventures!
DENVER [narrator]
I’m a private investigator looking for the killer.
BOO
And I’m the regular guy who’s gonna stop him.
BOO / DENVER [narrator]
Previously on Who Killed Alaska!
JO [clip - WKA17]
Alaska was attacked by two Outsiders!
BOO [clip - WKA17]
Alaska was attacked by two Outsiders and he was stabbed by an Outsider! The Outsiders wanted
to kill him!
BOO [clip - WKA17]
Having some kind of! Some kind of! Nightmare!
JO [clip - WKA17]
You’re in your hospital room. You banged your head again. The man who did it is gone now.
10
DENVER [narrator / clip - WKA16]
And Boo gets himself a ghost box.
BOO [clip - WKA16]
Emma. Jo. You’re gonna meet reflection.
BOO 2 [clip - WKA16]
I’m responding to you.
BOO [clip - WKA16]
Yeah.
BOO 2 [clip - WKA16]
I, me, my, mine. He can’t form a sentence but I can.
BOO [clip - WKA17]
Know where all the answers are! Need to go to bottom of the lake!
JO [clip - WKA17]
You can’t go to the lake.
BOO [clip - WKA17]
Okay.
BOO
And now, it’s time for the new episode!
DENVER [narrator]
Welcome back, bud.
BOO / DENVER [narrator]
This is Who Killed Alas—
11
DENVER [narrator]
When Boo originally arrived at the hospital, Emma was the first person to show up in the waiting
room, after me. She told me she should finally listen to Who Killed Alaska, so she did. And she
started taking notes, although I wasn’t watching her closely, and I didn’t take a look at the book
she was writing in. After a short while, Emma disappeared. I didn’t see her leave.
But later, I would find out where she was. This was when Emma became invested. In
between catching up on the episodes, she was slinking around in the hospital, eavesdropping, and
she even interviewed somebody who Boo and I never found: the nurse who did intake for Bobby
when Bobby came in with a missing hand, four years ago.
Emma wrote down a garbled mix of her own stream of consciousness and the words that
she heard. And what ended up on that page was these words: “Remember, remember, the
thirteenth of July, in 2019. When he was tossing and turning, he nearly scratched off his
bandages, ‘that boy’ said he saw a glimmering weapon in the hand of a girl. He said more, but
who can remember the rest?”
Those words were written into the interior cover of Emma’s notebook— the same
notebook Emma filled with so many notes about the Detective Files and the Adventures. Those
notes are still written into the cover. But with so much going on, Boo and Jo will never find
Emma’s message. Boo’s head was injured for the second time in 48 hours.
12
HALLWAYS.
DENVER
Bobby, can you go check on Boo?
BOBBY
Absolutely.
DENVER [narrator]
Boo is not going to be okay for a while.
HOSPITAL ROOM.
JO
He needs more time. He had a second head injury.
BOO 2 [ghostbox]
The whole point is that I’m not giving him more time. Anyway, he can hear me now. Boo. Are
you reverting yet?
BOO
Reverting?
BOO 2 [ghostbox]
To when you were a kid.
BOO
It’s scary but it’s also not scary enough.
BOO 2 [ghostbox]
That’s because part of your brain got dislodged in your skull.
13
BOO
Is that possible?
BOO 2 [ghostbox]
Of course it is. There’s less of you left now. It’ll always be not scary enough.
The ghost box is flipped off.
EMMA
Put the mirror away!
Boo hums “Bury Me.”
JO
Boo, what’re we gonna do?
EMMA
Don’t call him Boo.
BOO
Hold on. Trying not to think about the bottom of the lake.
JO
Boo, you can’t go!
BOO
The vibe can be changed with a nice song.
14
DENVER [narrator]
The nurse walks in.
Door opens.
JO
Let’s interview all the suspects! Do you wanna do that?
BOO
Okay.
NURSE 2
Hi, it’s good to see you awake. I heard some yelling. Is everything okay?
BOO
Okay.
DENVER [narrator]
The nurse checks Boo and asks him new intake questions. Jo stares at a trail of dust on the floor.
NURSE 2
Where are you right now?
BOO
Judging by the upholstery, you’re in St Francis Hospital.
NURSE 2
Okay, and where are you?
15
BOO
You’re in St Francis Hospital.
NURSE 2
What’s your name?
DENVER [narrator]
The nurse tells Boo that his parents are in the waiting room. He manages to type out a garbled
text to his parents saying he doesn’t want to be seen. Then the nurse tells him that his CT scan
will be postponed by another twelve hours. And she leaves them alone.
Door closes.
BOO
The lake. The lake. Oh. Are we recording?
JO
Yeah.
Boo grabs the mic and drags it across the bed.
BOO
Hello to the whole world. We’re going to solve a whole mystery. All the clues are right here! All
the clues are right in hands and gonna be able to put the, put them together. So who killed Alasss
is… is…
16
JO
Let’s put the microphone back.
BOO
Gonna hold onto it.
JO
Let’s put it back.
BOO
No.
Door creaks open.
JO
Try to solve the mystery when I bash your head in a third time. What’re you wincing for?
Bobby! You’re standing in the door and not moving and just watching us.
Door opens all the way.
BOBBY
I came to see Boo.
JO
How did you get in? I thought they only let two visitors in at a time.
17
BOBBY
Um. Emma isn’t here right now.
Pause.
JO
What? No, she was right here.
BOO
You can come in, Bobby.
Bobby enters. Closes the door.
BOBBY
Boo.
Bobby starts crying.
JO
Bobby. Boo wants to interview you. Do you wanna help us save Boo?
BOBBY
Denver wanted me to… not tell you anything…
18
BOO
Alisss, Alaskruh, what is, help, help out— and uh—
BOBBY
Yeah. I can help.
BOO
What?
BOBBY
I’ll answer any questions you want. If you tell me to help out, I’ll help.
JO
Do you wanna ask Bobby some questions?
BOO
Um… (pause) Kill Aler, Aler— Alaska?
BOBBY
No.
Pause.
JO
Alright, c’mon. Alrigh— ask him more questions.
BOO
Okay. Bobby. Sure not kill Alaser- Alaska?
19
BOBBY
Yeah.
JO
Boo, he— he’s not telling the truth. He’s not sure.
BOBBY
Wait, wha. Wait, what?
JO
Hey, I’ve never used my emotion-reading on the case. Y’know, I haven’t been keeping score.
BOO
For real?
JO
Well yeah, this is how you can interview them. I’ll be the human lie detector. Ask him a question,
Boo!
BOO
Did you make, did er, Al, did Alaska get killed by you?
BOBBY
No.
JO
Okay, and I can communicate to you that Bobby’s lying.
BOBBY
I mean, I don’t think I killed Alaska—
20
JO
And that’s true. Boo? (pause) Bobby, did you see who killed Alaska?
BOBBY
No. No.
JO
See! There you go! That’s true. So that means Bobby didn’t see who killed Alaska. Right? Okay
— Bobby, were you in the room whe— c’mon, go ahead, Boo, ask a question!
BOO
Were you in the room when Arda, ah, Alaska died?
BOBBY
No.
JO
And that’s true!
BOO
Um. Saw you gave to him, Aler, Ala— a birthday present that night, right?
BOBBY
Yeah, yes.
BOO
Saw you gave him some-something and what is, what did, what did you give him?
BOBBY
I mean. I probably can’t lie about this. I gave him a comb.
21
BOO
Did you give him a knife, Bobby?
JO
A knife!
BOBBY
Sorry bou— Sorry about that.
The door opens.
JO
Did you get him a knife?
BOBBY
Mhm.
JO
But you said you got him a comb!
BOBBY
Yeah, so… So. The night that I gave Alaska a birthday present and he opened it up, and
everybody did think it was a comb. But it really was a knife. Um. Before that, we had taken this
trip upstate and we were at like a cabin near a lake, and on one of the days we were there, we
went to a store and the backroom was full of racist weed bongs. And they had these combs.
These combs that you could pop the top off of and then it’s a letter opener kinda knife. That’s
where Boo bought that, like the Man Card he carries in his wallet.
22
BOO
Who did?
BOBBY
Uh— There were x-shaped slashes under all the tables and you said it was the symbol of the
Colombo crime family. Remember? So basically, yeah, I bought a mafia knife. And that’s the
knife that killed Alaska. Can you, like, pretend that you’re surprised by that?
BOO
You don’t need permission.
DENVER [narrator]
Bobby hesitates, and that’s when Jo gives Bobby a sharp look that says, “Don’t acknowledge that
there’s something wrong with Boo.”
BOBBY
Thanks. I do feel allowed— to explain. People say Alaska was stabbed with a cheap plastic knife
and the reason is because, yeah, it was literally a, a gag gift.
BOO
Just— You— Denver kept saw, saying Alaska was stabbed with a— a, uh— “cheap gag knife,”
so figured it out a while ago.
BOBBY
Gotcha. Um. I am a pacifist in practice. I would’ve never hurt him. But that was my knife— I am
so sorry.
23
BOO
Guess the fact that it’s your gift doesn’t mean you killed him. Arlas— Alaska thought you gave
him a comb so he probably just had it in his back pocket until he had it in his colon. Anybody
could’ve taken the knife off of him to stab him.
JO
That’s right, Boo!
EMMA
Oh no…
DENVER [narrator]
Let’s talk about Emma.
Emma has the unique ability to hide in plain sight. I don’t know how she does this. She
becomes a stranger in the corner of your eye, but the stranger is a stranger to being a stranger.
That’s what Emma is doing right now. She finds out that the knife that killed Alaska was in
Alaska’s pocket up until his death. And this changes everything.
This whole time, Emma’s been assuming that she could not have killed Alaska. She never
saw the knife until it was in Alaska’s abdomen. Emma never considered any serious possibility
that she could’ve stabbed Alaska, because it would’ve taken too many coincidences in a row to
kill Alaska while hallucinating. But she was too high to know what happened that night Alaska
died.
“Alaska thought you gave him a comb so he probably just had it in his back pocket.”
“Anybody could’ve taken the knife off of him to stab him.”
These words make it possible. Emma could have killed Alaska.
24
BOO
(dozing off) The, the the lake…
BOBBY
Boo? Are you okay?
DENVER [narrator]
And Emma rushes out.
Emma rushes out the door.
BOO
The door’s open.
JO
I’ll get it.
DENVER [narrator]
But Jo and Bobby and Boo don’t know that.
Jo goes to close the door. Then returns.
JO
Okay, that’s it. That’s it! Bobby, get out of here. We’re going to discuss our findings. Can you
send Logan to talk to us? Hey. Bobby, go tell Logan to visit us.
25
BOBBY
I just wish I was more honest with you. There are so many letters for the aliens that I wanted to
show to you but you always seemed so busy and I never wanted to bother you with my star
cluster.
BOO
You were gonna show your aliens to— you were guh— You were gonna show your letters to the
aliens? To? That would’ve been so special.
BOBBY
I love you, Boo.
BOO
Love you too.
BOBBY
Can I kiss you on the forehead?
BOO
Yeah.
Bobby kisses Boo on the forehead.
BOBBY
Mwah.
26
AD BREAK STARTS
BOO
Wait, there’s a change want to make. Hand that to.
JO
Okay?
BOO
It’s good now. Hello world. It’s time to take a break from solving who killed Alaska for a few
messages. Keep stuttering and messing up so Jo is gonna sing new ad break song for.
Boo starts playing guitar.
JO
When do I start?
BOO
Start whenever. Just strumming random chords.

AD BREAK ENDS
30
HALLWAY OUTSIDE PETE CANTU’S ROOM.
DENVER [narrator]
And at this time, I don’t know about Emma and her book either. I’m focused on two things—
finding out why an officer hurt Boo, and solving this mystery. Jeremy and I stand in the crowd to
watch the officer’s arrest.
DENVER
(muttering) I think Boo and Jo were investigating something important.
LOGAN
(muttering) So how do we find out what they know?
NURSE 6
Excuse me. Are you an investigator?
DENVER
Uh. Yes. I’m in the private sector, though.
NURSE 6
Are you Finn Denver?
DENVER
You listen to the podcast?
NURSE 6
The what?
DENVER
Um.
31
NURSE 6
I just know who you are. Follow me, Finn Denver.
Footsteps.
DENVER [narrator]
She walks ahead on a stride, and we scamper after her through the halls of the ICU.
DENVER
Uh. Where are we going?
DENVER [narrator]
And she stops, sifts through keys, and takes us into a radiology room.
RADIOLOGY.
Nurse 6 closes door behind them. Strides to the center of the room.
LOGAN
Um.
DENVER [narrator]
The nurse walks to the center of the room and stops at the white donut-shaped CT scanner. Then
she grabs onto a panel on the side of it… and she starts pulling on that panel.
Nurse 6 starts tugging on a panel on the CT scan. She’s grunting.
32
LOGAN
(muttering) Cool and normal.
DENVER
Do you need some help? Do you need some help?
DENVER [narrator]
And she rips off the side of the machine.
Nurse 6 pries the CT scanner open. The panel falls to the ground.
LOGAN
Okay. Slay.
DENVER [narrator]
And then she leaves the room.
Logan snorts.
DENVER
Oh? Uh— uh. Do we do something now?
Door closes.
33
LOGAN
There’s something in there.
DENVER
In the… machine…?
LOGAN
I think it’s— I dunno.
Slow, cautious footsteps.
DENVER [narrator]
Out of the gaping hole, a black slip of rubber sticks out. And that little black thing keeps
trembling and shifting around. The closer we step, the shape reveals itself as a shoe within the
gaping side of the machine. And the shoe is attached to a leg, pressed up against the machine’s
interior wires and joints. And the leg is attached to a hip… which is attached to a torso… which
is attached to a full lanky man crunched up in a fetal position within the machine.
STRANGE MAN
Hello.
DENVER
Who are you?
STRANGE MAN
I’m here to offer you a tip.
34
LOGAN
Um.
STRANGE MAN
Who’s your friend?
DENVER
He’s assisting my investigations— What’s going on?
STRANGE MAN
I’m here to warn you about Josephine Sta— Magaro. Josephine Magaro.
LOGAN
That sounds like a bad idea! Are you going to warn us about something that could get you killed
and potentially us also?
STRANGE MAN
No. It’s not that kind of warning. But that’s interesting. Do you know something I don’t?
LOGAN
No! It was just a guess.
DENVER
What’s going on?
STRANGE MAN
What’s going on is I have a photograph for you, Detective Denver. It might tell you something
about who killed your boy.
The strange man hands Denver a photograph.
35
DENVER [narrator]
He hands me a photograph. And it’s a sneaky picture of Jo with scars across the palms of her
hands.
DENVER
Alright, so, who are you, exactly?
STRANGE MAN
I’m Steven.
DENVER
And how do you know Jo?
STRANGE MAN
I’m her gynecologist.
DENVER
You’re her— Oh! So um. Do you support women’s rights, or— and—
STRANGE MAN
Vaginas are a normal and non-weird body part, Detective.
DENVER
Right! Yes. Yes they are. Absolutely. Vaginas.
LOGAN
So what’s with the creep shot? Do you have lots of bushes to hide in your gynecology office?
STRANGE MAN
I took this at a family get-together. I’m a family friend, too. I was her mother’s gynecologist.
36
DENVER
(whispering) He keeps saying gynecologist.
LOGAN
(whispering) It’s a normal word.
DENVER
Right! But wait if you’re a guyyyy who’s a doctor—
LOGAN
Gottem.
DENVER
If you’re not suspicious, then why have we never noticed these scars on Jo before?
STRANGE MAN
She covers them up with makeup. I bet if you compare old pictures and new pictures, you’d see
exactly when Jo started wearing that stuff to cover up the scars on her hands.
DENVER
But how would she stab Alaska while she was setting the forest fire?
LOGAN
And how did she hide it from the police? How would she patch up that scar without going to the
hospital?
STRANGE MAN
Hey, that’s for you to figure out! I just wanted to step in as a civilian doing a good deed. But I
will tell you— I don’t think the police tend to hate her. She’s got a PBA card, so that’s a start.
37
The strange man’s watch beeps.
STRANGE MAN
That’s my alarm. Alright, it’s time to get back in the machine. Pick that up.
DENVER [narrator]
And Steven the doctor for people has us pick up the panel of the CT scanner and reattach it to the
machine. Later on, Jeremy will recount that the nurse who ripped off the side of the scanner
must’ve been fuckin ripped.
Denver and Logan grunt as they pick up the side of the scanner and reattach it.
STRANGE MAN
Thaaaat’s it. There you go. There you go. Okay, now just push it in. There you go.
DENVER
What do we— y’know, what do we do now?
Logan walks away.
DENVER
Jeremy? Jere— wait!
Denver exits after Logan.
38
HALLWAY.
LOGAN
We have to ignore that.
DENVER
Yeah. I agree.
LOGAN
I’m just wondering, where does he shit? But if— no, he— he has to shit. But I don’t think it’s in
there. I, I have to go back in—
DENVER
Would she really put makeup on her hands every single day?
LOGAN
She also does her nails every week and rips off the nails when she gets called in by the fire
department. But that’s, that’s not the point.
DENVER
Sure. Would she put the makeup back on every time she washes her hands? That seems insane.
LOGAN
Plus, he was hiding his own hands that entire time.
DENVER [narrator]
That’s mysterious.
DENVER
What, like he photoshopped his hands onto her hands?
39
LOGAN
(frustrated) Uh—
DENVER
I’m not making fun of you! I’m just tired.
Bobby approaches.
BOBBY [approaching]
There you guys are!
DENVER
Hey.
BOBBY [approaching]
So Boo’s doing— he’s doing ok. I, I didn’t tell them anything.
DENVER
I know. I trust you.
BOBBY
And uh. Logan, Boo wanted you to visit.
LOGAN
I’m ok.
BOBBY
Are you sure?
40
DENVER
You can take a couple minutes to see Boo. We’ll be fine.
Pause.
LOGAN
Fine. I won’t tell them anything.
Logan walks away.
BOBBY
Denver. one quick thing.
DENVER
What’s up?
BOBBY
I’m thinking about this X symbol. And someone told me it’s the symbol of this, the, like the
Colombo crime family—
41
DENVER [narrator]
Then Jeremy disappears from my audio— and he appears in Boo’s.
HOSPITAL ROOM.
Door opens. Logan enters. Closes the door.
LOGAN
Hey Boo. Um. Just wanted to bounce something off your head here. Do you ever think that
maybe Bobby’s hand came off and it’s evil and maybe that’s the one that did all this?
BOO
I don’t wanna think about anything bouncing off my head anymore. That’s a real poor choice of
words, Logan.
LOGAN
I kinda chose it that way. So were you guys, like, interrogating Bobby?
BOO
You weren’t there.
LOGAN
I bet it was hardcore. I bet he cried.
BOO
Jo wants to be the human lie detector.
JO
And that’s true.
42
BOO
She’s, uh. Pretty good at reading people.
LOGAN
Huh. Nice. I wish I could read.
BOO
Yeah, whatever. The, the… the yeah… like…
Boo hums “Bury Me.”
JO
Come on, Boo! Ask another question!
BOO
That can’t be a name. Logan, did you kill Arle— Alaska?
LOGAN
Oh yeah.
JO
He’s lying.
Boo hums.
BOO
Did you kill All, Al, Alaska?
43
LOGAN
No. So. It’s been good seeing ya.
BOO
Yo, just, just wait for a sec. What’s Denver doing?
LOGAN
I’m helping him investigate. Is that, like uh, a problem?
BOO
It won’t work unless— unless— unless solve it. Unless solve it. Mm? Mirror’s gonna just end
everything unless Ar, Arll—
LOGAN
The way you talk is too messed up, bro. I don’t understand you.
BOO
Arlaska, Alaska, Alaska comes back able to talk and Arl-Alaska will only come back if the
person that you perceive to be right in front of you solves the mystery himself. Do you
understand?
LOGAN
I think so. Are you saying— are… Dude, I don’t understand you. That second hit gave you
problems in your brain. You’re saying random words.
BOO
No! No! No! No! No! No! Just— shut up! Shut up! Mirror’s gonna end everything. Don’t worry
about why. Only one person can solve the mystery and bring Arl-Arl-Alaska back.
44
LOGAN
Okay, I do get it. But that’s, that’s fucking weird. Why? Why would that…
BOO
Were you there to witness the killing?
LOGAN
No.
JO
He’s lying.
LOGAN
Cool. Wait are you gonna die?
BOO
No, gonna die if can’t figure out who killed (messing up) Alaska. That’s the thing, the creature,
the person you perceive in front of you will die. With flesh and everything— that one.
LOGAN
Okay.
BOO
And you don’t have— You’re not saying anything, and— Don’t get, don’t get, why are, why are,
YOU, why not expose—
LOGAN
I’m sorry. I can’t do this.
BOO
—why not say who killed, what killed, how, how killed—
45
LOGAN
This kind of blindsided me, I, I didn’t expect this.
JO
You didn’t expect us to ask you about Alaska’s death, the thing that’s Boo’s entire personality?
BOO
My entire personality?
JO (unison)
YOU SAID MY!
LOGAN (unison)
YOU TALKED NORMAL!
BOO
The— stop looking at!
LOGAN
I’ll just answer your question. Asking about Alaska’s death is fine. That’s fine. I didn’t expect the
trolley problem when I woke up yesterday. Can Emma go for a bit? Can we switch out? I swear
I’ll come back and I’ll talk your ears off. I just. I just need some time to think about how I’m
gonna say this.
Pause.
LOGAN
Yeah. Yeah, I’m just gonna go. An hour at most. Okay? Thanks, guys.
46
Logan walks to the door. Opens it.
LOGAN
Hey Boo?
BOO
Hey idiot?
LOGAN
Talk up what you came here for. And— and you came here for a lot. You don’t need a reason to
be confident.
Boo sniffs.
BOO
Mhm.
LOGAN
Boo! Cur! Tis! Boo! Cur! Tis! Boo! Cur! Tis!
Logan closes the door.
LOGAN [muffled]
Boo! Cur! Tis! Boo! Cur! Tis!
47
BOO
Was that true?
JO
Yeah. He actually got upset and he actually thinks he’s living the trolley problem. I think if he
says he’s gonna be back he will.
BOO
Oh, didn’t mean that, or— no, that’s the important part, you’re right. (sniffs) Um… So what do
you think? Did you pick up on anything that didn’t?
JO
Did I pick up on anything that didn’t?
BOO
Stooop.
JO
Nothing really, except… I mean you said something before about all the things I see and don’t
tell you about?
BOO
Sure?
JO
Logan likes me. Like. Like a lot.
BOO
Like Logan has a crush on you?
48
JO
No. Actually, I can’t place it. Every time Logan looks at me, he feels an emotion I’ve never seen
before in my life. It’s nothing like a crush or like love or anything. Honestly I don’t know how to
feel about it.
BOO
Maybe he doesn’t either.
JO
Well that’s probably true.
EMMA
Logan’s not—
BOO (unison)
AH!
JO (unison)
JESUS!
EMMA
I said Logan’s not worth it. I’ve moved on by the way.
JO
How long were you standing there!?
EMMA
Probably five minutes. Can Xanax distort your sense of time?
JO
No.
49
EMMA
Can too much Xanax distort your sense of time?
JO
Maybe it can help you distort your way into a seat, Emma.
BOO
Great job.
JO
Shut up.
Emma walks to seat. Sits down.
JO
Hey, before we talk, I’m gonna need a quick aside with Boo if that’s okay.
EMMA
(very high) Am I sitting yet?
The continuous sound of Emma’s chair crashing into things.
JO
(whispering) Jesus Christ. I don’t know if this one’s gonna go so well.
EMMA
Hey! Hey guys! Look at me, am I sitting yet? Hey! Guys! Look at me, am I sitting yet?
50
BOO
That’s fine, we don’t have time— So Emma, did you—
JO
Listen, if we’re doing this, then let me talk to her alone. I wanna get a reaction out of her.
BOO
(trying to whisper) We could do that, or we could— together.
EMMA
Oh my god, I don’t know if I’m sitting. This is terrible. This is like. This is like blueballs for
knowledge.
JO
Ohhh my god are you hearing this? Okay— It would be easier if I did it alone. Trust me, no, it’s
fine. I’ll record everything for you.
BOO
Guess. Okay. But gonna be on the other side of the door. Like literally put ear against the door.
JO
Do whatever. I don’t care. I just want her to focus on me for a second.
EMMA
I know what blueballs is but I still don’t know what a penis looks like.
BOO
Gonna— (snorts) go to the bathroom, be right back.
Boo gets up. Walks to a bathroom within the room.
51
EMMA
I drew a penis for Bobby and he said it’s still wrong.
Opens bathroom door. Closes it.
JO
Why’re you so into Stump Town? What do you do there?
EMMA
I just hang out. I like nature. Yesterday I found a cool bug.
JO
What kinda bug was it? How cool was the bug?
EMMA
I dunno! It was a cool bug. It was big.
JO
Describe the bug, Emma!
EMMA
That shouldn’t matter! It was brown! It was brown and it was big! Most bugs are brown!
JO
How did you feel when you saw Alaska’s body?
EMMA
What?
52
JO
How did you feel when you saw Alaska’s dead corpse?
EMMA
I was traumatized! It was bad! So bad! It was a bad time! Stop yelling at me!
Jo stands up.
JO
What’s wrong with you, do you go to a therapist or something? Tell me what’s wrong with you,
because I want to know. I want to know, I can see right through you, and it creeps me out. I can
see what nobody else sees, whatever I’m seeing, I’m seeing something! You can’t hide from
these eyes! What the hell is wrong with you, Emma?
EMMA
I have a lot of feelings! And! Sometimes! Loud noises freak me out! And! When people yell at
me! My head goes blank! And! I can’t think! And! I! I don’t remember! What you said now! I’m
sorry! I’m sorry!
JO
(realizing) Are you acting right now?
EMMA
No!
JO
Yes, you are!
53
EMMA
No!
JO
Yes yes yes, you totally are! You’re such a liar! You killed him, didn’t you?!
EMMA
NO!
JO
I’m gonna tell Boo you killed Alaska!
EMMA
NOOO!
Boo enters.
BOO
Jo.
Jo sits down.
BOO
You didn’t have to do that. Where did Emma go? Did you scare her off?
JO
I guess, I did— When did she— Wait, where is she?
54
Emma whimpers.
BOO
Do you have the bandwidth to apologize?
JO
It was fine. That was fine.
Emma grabs the book and runs out.
DENVER [narrator]
Emma runs out with the book in her hands, and nobody sees her do so. She does that— she hides
in plain sight. And now she’s off with the notebook that could solve the case, because she
might’ve killed Alaska.
BOO
Jo, you successfully intimi— intimidated her, fucking fantastic job. That doesn’t mean that that
was helpful.
JO
Boo, I can’t read Emma.
Nurse 2 walks by in the hallway.
55
NURSE 2
Is everything okay in here?
JO
Yeah we are good. We were just watching a video and the volume was set loud.
NURSE 2
No worries. Just checking.
Door closes.
BOO
What were you saying? You were saying something. You can’t read her?
JO
I saw Emma around in Stump Town. We were doing similar stuff at the time. We had similar
goals.
BOO
What goals?
JO
We were working the market.
BOO
Wow, and you—
56
JO
You know, I know, but it’s not relevant. What’s important is that I kept my distance from Emma,
because her emotions were weird and different. Kind of, blurry and unrecognizable. She was
hiding her emotions from me somehow. And now I can’t read them at all. When my sister smiles,
she’s happy. When you say you’re fine, you’re not. And then there’s Emma. With Emma, I can’t
tell.
BOO
So can’t interview her. Can’t do anything.
JO
That’s right.
BOO
Jo. If Emma could’ve killed Arl, At, Alaska… Emma probably killed him. Is it wrong that
considering that? Did you kill him?
JO
No. Did you?
BOO
Trying to understand the ques— question. Give a sec.
Pause.
BOO
No.
57
JO
Huh.
BOO
It has to be Emma. It’s quiet. Do you wanna put music on?
58
HALLWAYS.
DENVER [narrator]
And on our end, we still don’t know about Emma or her book.
DENVER
Alright, thank you for your time.
NURSE 2
Sure.
DENVER [narrator]
And we don’t even notice Emma rushing past us.
Emma rushes past.
DENVER [narrator]
Emma has her notebook in her hands. She rips out every single note about the podcast and
throws the book into the trash.
Emma’s ripping out pages. She throws the book in a trash can.
DENVER
Well, that was a bust.
BOBBY
Hey, I have an idea.
59
DENVER [narrator]
But Bobby has an idea.
Bobby starts to root through the trash.
DENVER
Bobby, don’t—
BOBBY
Have we ever actually checked in the trash?
LOGAN
Ugh, no thanks! I just ate. You can have some, though.
BOBBY
My fortune cookie, it told me that one man’s trash… is another man’s treasure!
Denver puts his hands on Bobby and starts to pull him away.
DENVER
Okay, come on—
BOBBY
Got it! A book! One man’s trash is another man’s treasure!
Bobby opens the book.
60
Denver takes it.
DENVER [narrator]
I take it out of Bobby’s hands.
Simult: Bobby’s phone vibrates.
DENVER
Bobby— You got a text.
BOBBY
Can I have the book?
DENVER
Check the text.
LOGAN
Just check it.
Bobby takes out his phone.
BOBBY
Emma says— no. No, it’s Jo. (pause) Boo wants to see me again.
Bobby grabs his rain jacket. Walks off.
61
DENVER [narrator]
Bobby walks away without eye contact.
DENVER
Can I have some hand sanitizer?
LOGAN
Bro, it has been on the top of my purse waiting for this moment.
Logan unzips his purse!
LOGAN
That’s a scary-looking book. Give it to me. I’ll throw it out a second time.
Denver gives book. Logan gives hand sanitizer.
62
DENVER [narrator]
Boo and Jo are doing more to interview Bobby, but it isn’t going anywhere.
HOSPITAL ROOM.
BOBBY
Um, so since you can tell when I’m telling the truth, I just wanna say that I did not stab Logan.
Like I didn’t stab him.
JO
He’s lying.
BOBBY
If I, if I’m lying, I don’t know it—
BOO
Jo, how (mispronouncing) much do you know? That you just never shared?
JO
Bold of you to assume I’m paying attention.
DENVER [narrator]
But Jo does know a lot more than she’s letting on.
BOBBY
Hey, I’ve been thinking a lot about that X symbol. Like the one for the Colombos, the crime
family, and I’m starting to wonder if it’s actually dark magic. Like what if it’s not a criminal
thing at all—
63
JO
Oh! Bobby. Did you hypnotize yourself to forget the night Alaska died?
BOBBY
No. That’s just traumatic memory loss.
JO
(whispering) He’s lying.
DENVER [narrator]
While me and Jeremy are just perplexed by this book.
64
HALLWAY.
DENVER [narrator]
Jeremy walks to the trash can. But before he drops the book, he opens it.
LOGAN
There’s no way.
DENVER [narrator]
And Jeremy approaches me with the book in his hands.
LOGAN
Look at this.
DENVER [narrator]
All of the pages are ripped out. Except that with all of the pages ripped out, there is still
handwriting on the inner cover. It reads: “Remember, remember, the thirteenth of July, in 2019.
When he was tossing and turning, he nearly scratched off his bandages, ‘that boy’ said he saw a
glimmering weapon in the hand of a girl. He said more, but who can remember the rest?”
LOGAN
I just found this.
DENVER
Oh god.
LOGAN
Yeah.
DENVER
Is it a cursed book?
65
LOGAN
That’s the day Alaska died.
DENVER
It says “a glimmering weapon in the hand of a girl.” That can only be three people.
LOGAN
Yeah, but it can’t be Jo. She had an alibi. She was setting stuff on fire.
DENVER
And it can’t be Emma, since Emma was high. And I don’t think it was Glory…
DENVER [narrator]
Jeremy will later on call this the moment where he wavers. From this moment, he wonders if him
and I are on the same side.
LOGAN
I’ll, uh, I’ll be right back. I hear a crying family I can kiss.
DENVER [narrator]
So he leaves, and he gives Boo a call.
66
HOSPITAL ROOM.
BOBBY
Uh. I’m gonna head out now.
BOO
Hope see you later, Bobby.
BOBBY
You will! You definitely will. Boo. Boo, you will.
Exits through door.
Boo’s ringtone: “Fuck You Kyle.”
Boo picks up.
LOGAN [speaker phone]
Boo, you’re not dead yet, right?
BOO
(gently) Aw man, it’s Logan. Day ruined. What’s going on?
LOGAN [speaker phone]
Hey we found a book. It says something weird in it. I’m gonna tell you what it says, okay?
BOO
Okay. Okay. One sec— Jo, can you write this down?
JO
Are your hands broken too?
67
BOO
Are your what?
JO
Alright, I’ll do it for you, you’re lucky I’m a sweetheart.
BOO
Thanks.
Jo pulls a pad of paper out of her purse and writes.
LOGAN [speaker phone]
Alright, here’s what it says: “Remember, remember, the thirteenth of July, in 2019. When he was
tossing and turning, he nearly scratched off his bandages,” dat boy “said he saw a glimmering
weapon in the HAND (laughs) of a girl—” I’m just laughing cause Bobby doesn’t have a hand.
That’s why. (wheezes) “He said more, but who can remember the rest?”
BOO
A glimmering weapon…?
LOGAN [speaker phone]
I don’t know about this. How about you?
BOO
Gotcha. What? How would know how you feel?
Logan laughs, confused.
68
LOGAN [speaker phone]
Okay well Denver says it’s about what Bobby saw. I’m gonna go stand next to Denver while he
does his thing so y’all do your thing. I’ll, uh, come talk to you guys soon, okay?
BOO
Take your time.
JO
Except don’t!
BOO
Right. Yes.
LOGAN [speaker phone]
See ya guys.
Logan hangs up.
BOO
Bye, Logan. Bye. Bye… Goodbye. Uh, so Bobby saw a girl with a weapon. Oh. Emma… Oh
jeez. Uh. Jo— Emma killed (struggling) Alaska.
HALLWAYS.
DENVER
We need to find out if Jo had scars on her hand.
69
LOGAN
No, no she— she didn’t! Jo didn’t— Jo did not!
LOGAN LAUGHS.
LOGAN
What’s wrong with you?
Logan pushes Denver.
LOGAN
First of all, I have to stand here in this fucked up place where my best friend was killed forever,
and now Boo’s gonna die AND YOU’RE threatening to take away (sobbing) the only one that’s
left.
DENVER
(gently) Bobby seems to have a repressed memory of a girl holding a weapon. We have plenty of
information that corroborates Emma being too high to function that night. So…
LOGAN
(stops sobbing) My eyes can’t cry! Haha…
DENVER
Uh, and…
70
LOGAN
I’m gonna talk to Jo and Boo about who actually killed Alaska. You go fuck yourself, Denver.
Logan storms off.
DENVER
Jeremy, please.
DENVER [narrator]
Jeremy saw Alaska die. And that’s a strange reaction if Jo killed Alaska herself. But… all of it is
so strange.
Bobby should have recognized Glory, even from a distance. The two of them were best
friends. Who knows, but Jo’s fire alibi could have some kind of loophole. Is Jo’s alibi really
foolproof? I wanna revisit it again.
71
EMPTY HALLWAY.
Fast-walking.
DENVER [narrator]
I’m walking through the hallways when—
DYLAN
Ey!
DAN
Turn around.
DENVER [narrator]
(clears throat) I’m walking through the hallways when I’m stopped by Dylan and Dan. And I
take note that Dylan is still holding that brown paper bag.
DENVER
Sorry?
DYLAN
Just get out of here!
DENVER [narrator]
And here’s probably the smartest thing I’ve ever done. I check how they’re standing, I look at the
doors they’re facing away from, and I make an educated guess about what room they’re
guarding. It’s a door on the left side. I make a RUN for it!—
Dan grunts.
72
DYLAN
DUDE! You let him go right by you!
Denver swings inside the room. Closes door.
OPERATING ROOM.
DENVER
Hi! I’m really sorry. I just kind of ran in here on instinct.
STRANGE MAN 2
You are early.
DENVER
Oh, I’m here by accident. I was just walking through the hallway and a couple guys threatened
me.
DENVER [narrator]
There’s a surgeon by the window. He’s picking up all the surgical tools and looking at them in
the light.
STRANGE MAN 2
Are you an investigator?
DENVER
Yes?
STRANGE MAN 2
Are you Finn Denver?
73
DENVER
Yes?
STRANGE MAN 2
I’ve been trying to find you because I know a thing about what you’re investigating. There’s a
rumor Jo had the means to set that fire from a distance.
DENVER [narrator]
Oh. Oh. That’s… possible.
DENVER
Where’d you hear this rumor from?
STRANGE MAN 2
My gynecologist. I’m trans.
DENVER
From Steve?
STRANGE MAN 2
Different gynecologist.
Flashback!
DENVER [useless flashback]
(whispering) He keeps saying gynecologist.
LOGAN [useless flashback]
(whispering) It’s a normal word.
74
DENVER
Why do guyyys who are doctors care about whether Jo Magaro killed Alaska?
STRANGE MAN 2
For the same reason you care. Right? Everybody has an opinion about the Curtis case.
Everybody wants to see a resolution. That’s all I know.
DENVER
Is there a way out of this room that doesn’t go into that hallway?
DENVER [narrator]
It doesn’t matter if he’s right or not. It’s true that Jo could’ve started that fire from a distance.
And if that’s true… Jo’s alibi could be moot. She could’ve killed Alaska. I need to see Jo’s
hands. If she was the one who stabbed Alaska… then she would’ve split her hand open on the
knife. I need to know if she’s been hiding those scars. And if she was, then that’s the end of this
story. That is the answer to our question.
And Boo doesn’t even know I’m coming.
75
HOSPITAL ROOM.
BOO
Emma killed Arla— Alaska.
JO
You think so? You really think so? Emma killed Alaska?
BOO
Pass the, the ghost box!
Boo clicks the ghost box. Static.
BOO
Emma killed Arla—Alaska. This has to be it. Tell! Tell!
BOO 2 [ghost box]
That’s not gonna work, dumbass. You have to know how.
BOO
No no no no no no no! You lied! You told have to know who killed Ala, Ala, Alaska! Was this all
fake!?
BOO 2 [ghost box]
You can’t just say the name! I didn’t lie, it’s not fake! If you just have a name, you didn’t solve
anything. It’s a random guess. Alaska isn’t back yet, is he. But you thought maybe it’s Bobby or
Logan or any of them, haven’t you? You need to actually understand or this isn’t going to work!
76
BOO
Can you pease tell if it’s, if it’s Emma?
BOO 2 [ghost box]
No.
Boo clicks the ghost box off.
JO
I got a text from Logan.
BOO
Yeah? Wait. Is he here?
Door.
NURSE 2
Visitor!
BOO
Thank you.
NURSE 2
Of course.
Nurse 2 closes the door.
77
BOO
Hey.
LOGAN
What’s up.
Beat: Logan walks to a chair and sits down.
LOGAN
I thought about turning in the killer. I really honestly thought about it. But I can’t say it.
BOO
Please. Please…
LOGAN
Me and Alaska were talking. We were in his basement, your basement. We um… Yo, here, ok,
I’m pulling something up to show you.
DENVER [narrator]
Jeremy pulls out his phone and he shows it to Boo and to Jo.
LOGAN
Show me your reaction to this.
DENVER [narrator]
And Jeremy shows them a corpse.
78
JO
Oh shit.
BOO
Don’t show this. Put it away. Put it away.
LOGAN
(laughing) It’s fake! It’s not real!
BOO
Well didn’t know that! Obviously!
LOGAN
I go to these kinds of websites a lot and stare at them. Have you guys ever heard of roleplays?
JO
Roleplays? What’re you, what’re you talking about—
LOGAN
Roleplays. Do you know about LARPing? It’s kind of like that. There are communities of people
on the internet who do different kinds of pretend. There are roleplays where you pretend to be
stabbed or roleplays where you’re kidnapped and held for ransom. Or roleplays where you
pretend to die in a hole and nobody comes to your funeral—
BOO
What are you talking about…?
JO
Logan… Logan that isn’t normal….
79
LOGAN
—or roleplays where your office job is so painful that it sucks out the last drop of joy while your
parents beat the shit out of you or roleplays where you act like a snake under somebody’s foot.
Surprise is usually a factor. Like you don’t know what’s coming.
BOO
Are you saying you and Ar, Ar, Alaska…
LOGAN
I didn’t say anything. You said that. I also didn’t say I was going to pretend to be killed— you
know. For fun.
BOO
Logan, wha, wha—
JO
True. All true.
BOO
Sorry. You, you, you wanted Arla-Ah-Alaska to pretend to kill you?
LOGAN
The anticipation was so high… when I saw the knife… and then it went into Alaska. Everything
started looking like a cartoon to me when his blood poured out like a—
Logan laughs. And laughs.
The laughing becomes screaming.
Boo stands.
80
BOO
Logan, Logan, who did it! Logan Logan Logan, who did it! LOGAN! WHO DID IT!
LOGAN
I know now but I can’t say! I’m roadkill, man! I can’t say it!
BOO
Are you being held hostage!?
LOGAN
No! Just no- NO! I just can’t send anyone to prison! I can never do it! I wasn’t raised for this!
BOO
Is it Emma!? IS IT EMMA? IS IT EMMA? IS IT EMMA?
LOGAN
(laughing and screaming) I’m not gonna tell you!
JO
True.
LOGAN
I’m roadkill! I can’t tell you!
Boo stomps off.
BOO
I’m going to the bathroom.
81
IN-ROOM BATHROOM.
Boo slams the door shut.
Boo turns the faucet on.
LOGAN [from the other room]
We’re just playing around! Let’s just go back to telling fucking jokes! I think I shit my pants.
JO [from the other room]
False.
Boo turns the ghostbox on.
BOO 2 [ghost box]
—broken. Bet you can’t think, can you?
BOO
Something’s wrong! Feel like everything he’s saying is testal—technically correct but something,
something is wrong.
BOO 2 [ghost box]
Oh, so you can still think.
BOO
So you agree with!
BOO 2 [ghost box]
We’re usually on the same page. You just hate yourself too much for me to like you.
82
BOO
Can’t think! Can’t think can’t think. Have to remember to breathe and when think can’t
remember to breathe! Please! Please, please, please, please just give some kind of hint. Please.
BOO 2 [ghost box]
You want a hint? Go to the lake, Boo. You might drown but you might find something down
there.
BOO
You’re trying to kill.
BOO 2 [ghost box]
I sure am. But what if you beat me?
BOO
Try to convince Jo before you convince. Jo’s not gonna let out.
Boo 2 laughs.
BOO 2 [ghost box]
I can help you.
BOO
You can help get to the lake?
BOO 2 [ghost box]
You can jump out this window.
83
BOO
THAT’S—
BOO 2 [ghost box]
You wanna save Alaska, don’t you? Don’t you wanna save yourself? Aren’t you tired of being
depressed? Aren’t you tired of giving up before you started? It hurts to try but it hurts more and
more as you rot away. I can help you get to the lake.
BOO
How!?
BOO 2 [ghost box]
I can’t teleport you.
BOO
Yeah. So how?
BOO 2 [ghost box]
But I can hold your bones together when you jump out that window. You saw Emma’s car in the
parking lot. Her car’s windows are broken. It would be so easy to steal that car.
BOO
I’ll… I’m not coordinated yet. I could hit my head again.
BOO 2 [ghost box]
I can numb the pain when you do.
BOO
No no no no no. If hit head again, could be broken forever. Could lose everything left in me.
84
BOO 2 [ghost box]
But isn’t this what you wanted?
BOO
What?
BOO 2 [ghost box]
Didn’t you want that in the first place? To be nobody?
Ringing.
Boo struggles to open the window.
BOO 2 [ghost box]
Make sure you don’t yell. If you yell, they’ll hear you.
Boo turns off the ghost box.
OUTSIDE.
And Boo jumps.
Wind rushing through the microphone.
Boo hits the ground.
85
BOO
THE LAKE! THE LAKE! THE LAKE! THE LAKE! THE LAKE! THE LAKE! THE LAKE!
THE LAKE!
86
DENVER [narrator]
I arrive thirty minutes later.
HALLWAY OUTSIDE BOO’S ROOM.
Denver knocks.
DENVER [narrator]
Jo opens the door.
Door opens.
DENVER [narrator]
She stares at me blankly. Jeremy calls out from inside the room.
LOGAN
Boo’s in the bathroom.
DENVER
Actually, I’m here to ask about—
LOGAN
He’s been in the bathroom for like half an hour.
DENVER
I’m here to check—
87
JO
Why are you staring at me?
Logan knocks on bathroom door.
LOGAN
Boo! The detective’s here. Do you wanna talk to him or no?
DENVER
I’m not here for Boo.
JO
What is it?
DENVER
I’m here for you. I need you to show me your hands.
LOGAN
Guys! Boo isn’t in there.
JO
Boo? Boo!?
Everyone stomps into the room. Denver bangs on the door.
DENVER
Boo? Are you in there?
88
EMMA
Guys?
JO
JESUS! Emma, how long have you been standing there?
EMMA
My car is gone. I said my car is gone.
DENVER
Then he has to be going to—
LOGAN
The lake.
DENVER
The lake! It’s happening all over again.
DENVER [narrator]
And without missing a beat, Dylan and Dan are in the hall.
DYLAN
What’s going on!?
DAN
Where’re we going!?
DENVER [narrator]
They pretend they weren’t trying to chase me off earlier. We meet Bobby outside.
89
DENVER’S CAR.
Logan is breathing quickly.
LOGAN
What’re we gonna do if we show up at the lake and Boo’s dead? What we do, even, legally?
BOBBY
He’s gonna be fine.
DAN
Just gotta move on. And keep living, for him.
LOGAN
Yeah! Fucking whatever! Thank you, lackey! I didn’t say that.
DYLAN
Jo. Does he know? Jo? Jooooo, does he knooooow?
JO
Dylan, stop it. Can you guys shut up while I try to manifest? Either manifest or pray, like what
the fuck.
DENVER
Let’s do a role call. Do we have Bobby?
BOBBY
I’m here.
DENVER
Do we have Dylan?
90
DYLAN
Yo.
DENVER
Do we have Dan?
DAN
I’m here.
DENVER
Jeremy? I just heard Jeremy.
LOGAN
What? Uh—
DENVER
Jo?
JO
I’m here, hon.
DENVER
And Emma?
Pause.
DENVER
Is Emma not here? Okay, who’s gonna text Emma that we’ll be back?
91
BOBBY
Wait, lemme check. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, Emma’s here. She just disappears sometimes.
EMMA
I’m just trying to have some privacy.
JO
Jesus FUCKING Christ! How long have you been there, Emma!?
EMMA
I’m trying to dissociate.
LOGAN
Oh my fucking god— can someone pull the earbuds out of my pocket and hand them to me?
DAN
Want me to pull them with my teeth?
EMMA
Logan, I am just not into you anymore!
Logan opens the car door. Everyone screams. Logan closes the car door.
JO
LOGAN WHAT THE FUCK!
LOGAN
I wasn’t actually gonna jump out.
92
Turn signal.
JO
Ok, ok, don’t park! Just stop here!
Car screeches to a stop.
BOBBY
Ow.
STUMP TOWN.
Everyone gets out and starts running.
DENVER
Leave the door open! It’s fine! It’s my work car. They’ll replace it!
NEAR THE LAKE.
JO
(calling for him) BOO!
LOGAN
Those’re his shoes!
93
Jo dives into the water.
DYLAN
Jo! Do you want help?
LOGAN
She can do it.
DENVER [narrator]
I kick off my shoes. I won’t make this mistake again. I jump in.
Denver jumps in.
Water fills the mic. It breaks.
DENVER [narrator]
My microphone breaks. Me and Jo look around in the water. Then Dylan and Dan join us, and I
have to watch one of them throw that paper bag above water. Boo is nowhere. Where is he?
Actually, he’s above water. Sitting next to his microphone. And here’s the recording.
LOGAN / BOBBY
BOO! BOOOOO!
Boo is sniffling.
94
BOBBY [approaching]
(crying) Boo! You’re okay!
BOO
Couldn’t do it. Afraid to die. So now just gonna die anyway.
Jo surfaces from the water. Breathes.
JO
BOO! BOO!
Jo climbs up onto land.
JO
BOO! Boo, you’re alive! You’re…
She hugs him.
JO
(crying) Shut up. Shut the fuck up. Don’t talk ever again.
Denver also surfaces. So do Dylan and Dan.
95
DENVER
Jo. Can you take a few steps towards me?
JO
Are you— Are you trying to take Boo away from me!?
BOO
No. Denver. This— this can’t be real.
DENVER
Just step towards me please, Jo.
JO
What’s WRONG? Fine! Ok, fine! What’s wrong? What’s wrong with you?
DENVER
I saw your hands in the lake.
Pause.
DENVER
Jo. Did you kill Alaska?
BOO
Jo! Your hands are scarred! But— but I see your hands all the time! That’s not possible!
Jo starts laughing.
96
JO
No! No I didn’t!
DENVER
She’s been wearing makeup.
EMMA
What!?
JO
No, it’s just a tattoo! It’s not a scar!
BOBBY
Guys. She’s right. Like that’s not a scar. That is a tattoo of an X symbol… as in. Like. The
Colombo crime family.
BOO
The… the fucking MAFIA!?
DAN
Jo! Catch!
Dan throws Jo the paper bag. It has something heavy in it.
DENVER [narrator]
Jo takes something out of that brown bag and raises it to the sky.
Jo pulls it out.
97
DENVER [narrator]
A girl with a glinting weapon— and I realize: that the weapon was never a knife.
Gunshot.

WKA #18 TRANSCRIPT.pdf

  • 1. WHO KILLED ALASKA #18 - MIRROR MEMORIA PART 3 written by Cameron Cooper LeBrun
  • 2. DENVER [narrator] You’re listening to part 3 of the four-part season finale. This episode contains significant depictions of head trauma and brain damage. Before we get started, I thought you should know that even when this episode gets scary, you are still safe. Check the bottom of the description for a full list of content warnings. And if you get scared, just imagine we’re all holding hands. 2
  • 3. DENVER [narrator] In the previous episode, Bobby, Jeremy, and I decided to look for security footage. By early morning, I’ve found hospital security footage from the night of Alaska’s death. SECURITY OFFICE. DENVER Oh gosh. Bobby, you can look away. BOBBY Thank you. DENVER [narrator] In the video, an absolute stranger attacks Alaska. It’s somebody I’ve never seen before. It’s hospital staff. BOBBY I’ll find out who that is. DENVER No. I’ll do it. I can do it faster. DENVER [narrator] And Jeremy’s standing rangy in the doorway. LOGAN Who was that? DENVER [narrator] I don’t think I can tell you what Jeremy looks like in this moment. There’s no way to describe it. 3
  • 4. DENVER Are we all okay? BOBBY I don’t think it matters. Denver sighs. Denver moves and clicks the computer mouse around. DENVER I’ll bring us back to the live security feed and then we can go. LOGAN Emma, please go fuck off. EMMA I’m being helpful right now. BOBBY (in the background) Is there a way to send me the video? DENVER (in the background) I have it on Drive. BOBBY (in the background) Alright. Alright. Perfect. 4
  • 5. DENVER [narrator] If you’re wondering about this conversation between Jeremy and Emma— no, I’m not catching any of it. Emma’s hiding and only Jeremy seems to be aware of her. The microphone is picking it up, but Bobby and I are preoccupied. LOGAN I thought you’re into Denver. What happened to “I’d follow his rump to the ends of this earth?” EMMA There’s a little more going on right now! And I was joking! DENVER [narrator] Then, in the corner of my eye, I catch a glint. In one of the bottom right video feeds, the ceiling lights are reflecting on a pair of goggles and it’s Curtis. It’s Boo fucking Curtis waddling around through a hallway with Jo close behind. DENVER That’s Boo! BOBBY Wait. Where? DENVER He’s going inside somebody else’s room. Oh, god. I’ll check where this is— Denver is clicking and moving the mouse again. 5
  • 6. DENVER You’d think they’d label these! BOBBY Jo’s friends are over here. DENVER Oh, yeah, what’re they… doing? DENVER [narrator] And now we’ve got Dylan and Dan too. They’re strolling around in an upper-right-hand video feed. So I ask Bobby for a favor. DENVER Could you text Jo for me? BOBBY Sure. I mean, what should I say? DENVER Have her— have her ask Boo if Dylan and Dan gave him something to eat. BOBBY Why? DENVER Because they’re carrying around a brown paper bag and I wanna know what’s in it. 90% of my job is asking boring questions. 6
  • 7. DENVER [narrator] I can’t figure out how to find the room Boo’s in, but I also take a couple minutes to monitor Dylan and Dan along the way. I try to figure out what they’re doing, but they’re just standing around in the hallway. Like they don’t have anything to do. So— why are they here? BOBBY Something’s happening. DENVER [narrator] I look to the room Boo went into. Hospital security is rushing inside. A member of medical staff is hanging outside the open doorway and trying to lean over enough to get a good look. Soon we’ll hear about Boo’s second head injury. Boo’s being attacked by law enforcement. And in the scuffle, his head is banged against a wall. I don’t have time to panic. Instead, I work. I find the name of the woman who attempted to assault Alaska in our CCTV footage. This is what my job is supposed to be— typing search terms into my laptop. I find her name. It’s Kenzie Joyce. Then Boo wakes up. 7
  • 8. HOSPITAL ROOM. EMMA But, there was a staff member that attacked Alaska while he was in the hospital! Her name was Kenzie Joyce! I think she was an Outsider! BOO No no no! No no no! JO Boo! Boo, can you hear us? Alaska was attacked by two Outsiders! DENVER [narrator] We call them. OUTSIDE THE HOSPITAL. DENVER Is Boo screaming? JO [speaker phone] He wants to go to the— to the bottom of the lake. The lake in Stump Town. LOGAN Why? JO [speaker phone] (shaky) Because Alaska was attacked by two Outsiders and his psychic said a while ago that Outsiders come from the bottom of that lake so now he wants answers. But I told him no we’re not doing that. 8
  • 9. DENVER [narrator] I remind myself that today could be difficult. Today could be trying. And I’m prepared to be scared and overwhelmed. Everything is worth a try, and a try is worth your confidence. 9
  • 10. THEME SONG STARTS DENVER [narrator] Welcome to Who Killed Alaska: Detective Files. BOO This is Who Killed Alaska: The Adventures! DENVER [narrator] I’m a private investigator looking for the killer. BOO And I’m the regular guy who’s gonna stop him. BOO / DENVER [narrator] Previously on Who Killed Alaska! JO [clip - WKA17] Alaska was attacked by two Outsiders! BOO [clip - WKA17] Alaska was attacked by two Outsiders and he was stabbed by an Outsider! The Outsiders wanted to kill him! BOO [clip - WKA17] Having some kind of! Some kind of! Nightmare! JO [clip - WKA17] You’re in your hospital room. You banged your head again. The man who did it is gone now. 10
  • 11. DENVER [narrator / clip - WKA16] And Boo gets himself a ghost box. BOO [clip - WKA16] Emma. Jo. You’re gonna meet reflection. BOO 2 [clip - WKA16] I’m responding to you. BOO [clip - WKA16] Yeah. BOO 2 [clip - WKA16] I, me, my, mine. He can’t form a sentence but I can. BOO [clip - WKA17] Know where all the answers are! Need to go to bottom of the lake! JO [clip - WKA17] You can’t go to the lake. BOO [clip - WKA17] Okay. BOO And now, it’s time for the new episode! DENVER [narrator] Welcome back, bud. BOO / DENVER [narrator] This is Who Killed Alas— 11
  • 12. DENVER [narrator] When Boo originally arrived at the hospital, Emma was the first person to show up in the waiting room, after me. She told me she should finally listen to Who Killed Alaska, so she did. And she started taking notes, although I wasn’t watching her closely, and I didn’t take a look at the book she was writing in. After a short while, Emma disappeared. I didn’t see her leave. But later, I would find out where she was. This was when Emma became invested. In between catching up on the episodes, she was slinking around in the hospital, eavesdropping, and she even interviewed somebody who Boo and I never found: the nurse who did intake for Bobby when Bobby came in with a missing hand, four years ago. Emma wrote down a garbled mix of her own stream of consciousness and the words that she heard. And what ended up on that page was these words: “Remember, remember, the thirteenth of July, in 2019. When he was tossing and turning, he nearly scratched off his bandages, ‘that boy’ said he saw a glimmering weapon in the hand of a girl. He said more, but who can remember the rest?” Those words were written into the interior cover of Emma’s notebook— the same notebook Emma filled with so many notes about the Detective Files and the Adventures. Those notes are still written into the cover. But with so much going on, Boo and Jo will never find Emma’s message. Boo’s head was injured for the second time in 48 hours. 12
  • 13. HALLWAYS. DENVER Bobby, can you go check on Boo? BOBBY Absolutely. DENVER [narrator] Boo is not going to be okay for a while. HOSPITAL ROOM. JO He needs more time. He had a second head injury. BOO 2 [ghostbox] The whole point is that I’m not giving him more time. Anyway, he can hear me now. Boo. Are you reverting yet? BOO Reverting? BOO 2 [ghostbox] To when you were a kid. BOO It’s scary but it’s also not scary enough. BOO 2 [ghostbox] That’s because part of your brain got dislodged in your skull. 13
  • 14. BOO Is that possible? BOO 2 [ghostbox] Of course it is. There’s less of you left now. It’ll always be not scary enough. The ghost box is flipped off. EMMA Put the mirror away! Boo hums “Bury Me.” JO Boo, what’re we gonna do? EMMA Don’t call him Boo. BOO Hold on. Trying not to think about the bottom of the lake. JO Boo, you can’t go! BOO The vibe can be changed with a nice song. 14
  • 15. DENVER [narrator] The nurse walks in. Door opens. JO Let’s interview all the suspects! Do you wanna do that? BOO Okay. NURSE 2 Hi, it’s good to see you awake. I heard some yelling. Is everything okay? BOO Okay. DENVER [narrator] The nurse checks Boo and asks him new intake questions. Jo stares at a trail of dust on the floor. NURSE 2 Where are you right now? BOO Judging by the upholstery, you’re in St Francis Hospital. NURSE 2 Okay, and where are you? 15
  • 16. BOO You’re in St Francis Hospital. NURSE 2 What’s your name? DENVER [narrator] The nurse tells Boo that his parents are in the waiting room. He manages to type out a garbled text to his parents saying he doesn’t want to be seen. Then the nurse tells him that his CT scan will be postponed by another twelve hours. And she leaves them alone. Door closes. BOO The lake. The lake. Oh. Are we recording? JO Yeah. Boo grabs the mic and drags it across the bed. BOO Hello to the whole world. We’re going to solve a whole mystery. All the clues are right here! All the clues are right in hands and gonna be able to put the, put them together. So who killed Alasss is… is… 16
  • 17. JO Let’s put the microphone back. BOO Gonna hold onto it. JO Let’s put it back. BOO No. Door creaks open. JO Try to solve the mystery when I bash your head in a third time. What’re you wincing for? Bobby! You’re standing in the door and not moving and just watching us. Door opens all the way. BOBBY I came to see Boo. JO How did you get in? I thought they only let two visitors in at a time. 17
  • 18. BOBBY Um. Emma isn’t here right now. Pause. JO What? No, she was right here. BOO You can come in, Bobby. Bobby enters. Closes the door. BOBBY Boo. Bobby starts crying. JO Bobby. Boo wants to interview you. Do you wanna help us save Boo? BOBBY Denver wanted me to… not tell you anything… 18
  • 19. BOO Alisss, Alaskruh, what is, help, help out— and uh— BOBBY Yeah. I can help. BOO What? BOBBY I’ll answer any questions you want. If you tell me to help out, I’ll help. JO Do you wanna ask Bobby some questions? BOO Um… (pause) Kill Aler, Aler— Alaska? BOBBY No. Pause. JO Alright, c’mon. Alrigh— ask him more questions. BOO Okay. Bobby. Sure not kill Alaser- Alaska? 19
  • 20. BOBBY Yeah. JO Boo, he— he’s not telling the truth. He’s not sure. BOBBY Wait, wha. Wait, what? JO Hey, I’ve never used my emotion-reading on the case. Y’know, I haven’t been keeping score. BOO For real? JO Well yeah, this is how you can interview them. I’ll be the human lie detector. Ask him a question, Boo! BOO Did you make, did er, Al, did Alaska get killed by you? BOBBY No. JO Okay, and I can communicate to you that Bobby’s lying. BOBBY I mean, I don’t think I killed Alaska— 20
  • 21. JO And that’s true. Boo? (pause) Bobby, did you see who killed Alaska? BOBBY No. No. JO See! There you go! That’s true. So that means Bobby didn’t see who killed Alaska. Right? Okay — Bobby, were you in the room whe— c’mon, go ahead, Boo, ask a question! BOO Were you in the room when Arda, ah, Alaska died? BOBBY No. JO And that’s true! BOO Um. Saw you gave to him, Aler, Ala— a birthday present that night, right? BOBBY Yeah, yes. BOO Saw you gave him some-something and what is, what did, what did you give him? BOBBY I mean. I probably can’t lie about this. I gave him a comb. 21
  • 22. BOO Did you give him a knife, Bobby? JO A knife! BOBBY Sorry bou— Sorry about that. The door opens. JO Did you get him a knife? BOBBY Mhm. JO But you said you got him a comb! BOBBY Yeah, so… So. The night that I gave Alaska a birthday present and he opened it up, and everybody did think it was a comb. But it really was a knife. Um. Before that, we had taken this trip upstate and we were at like a cabin near a lake, and on one of the days we were there, we went to a store and the backroom was full of racist weed bongs. And they had these combs. These combs that you could pop the top off of and then it’s a letter opener kinda knife. That’s where Boo bought that, like the Man Card he carries in his wallet. 22
  • 23. BOO Who did? BOBBY Uh— There were x-shaped slashes under all the tables and you said it was the symbol of the Colombo crime family. Remember? So basically, yeah, I bought a mafia knife. And that’s the knife that killed Alaska. Can you, like, pretend that you’re surprised by that? BOO You don’t need permission. DENVER [narrator] Bobby hesitates, and that’s when Jo gives Bobby a sharp look that says, “Don’t acknowledge that there’s something wrong with Boo.” BOBBY Thanks. I do feel allowed— to explain. People say Alaska was stabbed with a cheap plastic knife and the reason is because, yeah, it was literally a, a gag gift. BOO Just— You— Denver kept saw, saying Alaska was stabbed with a— a, uh— “cheap gag knife,” so figured it out a while ago. BOBBY Gotcha. Um. I am a pacifist in practice. I would’ve never hurt him. But that was my knife— I am so sorry. 23
  • 24. BOO Guess the fact that it’s your gift doesn’t mean you killed him. Arlas— Alaska thought you gave him a comb so he probably just had it in his back pocket until he had it in his colon. Anybody could’ve taken the knife off of him to stab him. JO That’s right, Boo! EMMA Oh no… DENVER [narrator] Let’s talk about Emma. Emma has the unique ability to hide in plain sight. I don’t know how she does this. She becomes a stranger in the corner of your eye, but the stranger is a stranger to being a stranger. That’s what Emma is doing right now. She finds out that the knife that killed Alaska was in Alaska’s pocket up until his death. And this changes everything. This whole time, Emma’s been assuming that she could not have killed Alaska. She never saw the knife until it was in Alaska’s abdomen. Emma never considered any serious possibility that she could’ve stabbed Alaska, because it would’ve taken too many coincidences in a row to kill Alaska while hallucinating. But she was too high to know what happened that night Alaska died. “Alaska thought you gave him a comb so he probably just had it in his back pocket.” “Anybody could’ve taken the knife off of him to stab him.” These words make it possible. Emma could have killed Alaska. 24
  • 25. BOO (dozing off) The, the the lake… BOBBY Boo? Are you okay? DENVER [narrator] And Emma rushes out. Emma rushes out the door. BOO The door’s open. JO I’ll get it. DENVER [narrator] But Jo and Bobby and Boo don’t know that. Jo goes to close the door. Then returns. JO Okay, that’s it. That’s it! Bobby, get out of here. We’re going to discuss our findings. Can you send Logan to talk to us? Hey. Bobby, go tell Logan to visit us. 25
  • 26. BOBBY I just wish I was more honest with you. There are so many letters for the aliens that I wanted to show to you but you always seemed so busy and I never wanted to bother you with my star cluster. BOO You were gonna show your aliens to— you were guh— You were gonna show your letters to the aliens? To? That would’ve been so special. BOBBY I love you, Boo. BOO Love you too. BOBBY Can I kiss you on the forehead? BOO Yeah. Bobby kisses Boo on the forehead. BOBBY Mwah. 26
  • 27. AD BREAK STARTS BOO Wait, there’s a change want to make. Hand that to. JO Okay? BOO It’s good now. Hello world. It’s time to take a break from solving who killed Alaska for a few messages. Keep stuttering and messing up so Jo is gonna sing new ad break song for. Boo starts playing guitar. JO When do I start? BOO Start whenever. Just strumming random chords. JO (reading the lyrics) Music Music Is music to ears The money doesn’t matter The m— The money doesn’t matter? Alright— 27
  • 28. The money doesn’t matter, uh— Just tell your people how you feel about this show Tell them all the things you like and paint a picture Paint— what do you mean? And then make a happy memory, Listening together Support our show Tell your favorite people about Who Killed Alaska (spoken) Sorry, Boo, what, what is the point of this? I’m just, I’m not— I don’t really— Boo stops playing. BOO (sadly) Not Boo. Um. JO Okay. Well. Alright. Well— Why are we doing an advertisement? You know. Right now? Like, what’s the point of this? BOO Do you want to make up lyrics? JO If you want. BOO It’s fi ne. Just hand the lyrics? 28
  • 29. BOO Thank you to the people who donate Thank you to LavenderKozzy, grinleysspa, Antigone, LaceAnn, MishaWarlock, Shay, Andrew Roper, CJ Taylor Caldwell, Lilly Carleton, Brad Goupil, NarJuzz, Emma, and Nicole Collard, Shep, Sarah, Ash, Shoshi, LivinLuxuriouslySelena, Kelly Brennan, and Declan McAuley (spoken) You— can— can you do the, the, the next part? That’s it, that’s it actually. That’s— That’s— That’s all that’s on the page. So… BOO OH shit. Forgot to write the ending. Ah, it was gonna be really sentimental. That’s so fucked up. JO It’s okay. It was good. 29
  • 30. BOO Thank you. JO Yeah, it was good. Yeah. Boo strums aggressively. Boo grunts. AD BREAK ENDS 30
  • 31. HALLWAY OUTSIDE PETE CANTU’S ROOM. DENVER [narrator] And at this time, I don’t know about Emma and her book either. I’m focused on two things— finding out why an officer hurt Boo, and solving this mystery. Jeremy and I stand in the crowd to watch the officer’s arrest. DENVER (muttering) I think Boo and Jo were investigating something important. LOGAN (muttering) So how do we find out what they know? NURSE 6 Excuse me. Are you an investigator? DENVER Uh. Yes. I’m in the private sector, though. NURSE 6 Are you Finn Denver? DENVER You listen to the podcast? NURSE 6 The what? DENVER Um. 31
  • 32. NURSE 6 I just know who you are. Follow me, Finn Denver. Footsteps. DENVER [narrator] She walks ahead on a stride, and we scamper after her through the halls of the ICU. DENVER Uh. Where are we going? DENVER [narrator] And she stops, sifts through keys, and takes us into a radiology room. RADIOLOGY. Nurse 6 closes door behind them. Strides to the center of the room. LOGAN Um. DENVER [narrator] The nurse walks to the center of the room and stops at the white donut-shaped CT scanner. Then she grabs onto a panel on the side of it… and she starts pulling on that panel. Nurse 6 starts tugging on a panel on the CT scan. She’s grunting. 32
  • 33. LOGAN (muttering) Cool and normal. DENVER Do you need some help? Do you need some help? DENVER [narrator] And she rips off the side of the machine. Nurse 6 pries the CT scanner open. The panel falls to the ground. LOGAN Okay. Slay. DENVER [narrator] And then she leaves the room. Logan snorts. DENVER Oh? Uh— uh. Do we do something now? Door closes. 33
  • 34. LOGAN There’s something in there. DENVER In the… machine…? LOGAN I think it’s— I dunno. Slow, cautious footsteps. DENVER [narrator] Out of the gaping hole, a black slip of rubber sticks out. And that little black thing keeps trembling and shifting around. The closer we step, the shape reveals itself as a shoe within the gaping side of the machine. And the shoe is attached to a leg, pressed up against the machine’s interior wires and joints. And the leg is attached to a hip… which is attached to a torso… which is attached to a full lanky man crunched up in a fetal position within the machine. STRANGE MAN Hello. DENVER Who are you? STRANGE MAN I’m here to offer you a tip. 34
  • 35. LOGAN Um. STRANGE MAN Who’s your friend? DENVER He’s assisting my investigations— What’s going on? STRANGE MAN I’m here to warn you about Josephine Sta— Magaro. Josephine Magaro. LOGAN That sounds like a bad idea! Are you going to warn us about something that could get you killed and potentially us also? STRANGE MAN No. It’s not that kind of warning. But that’s interesting. Do you know something I don’t? LOGAN No! It was just a guess. DENVER What’s going on? STRANGE MAN What’s going on is I have a photograph for you, Detective Denver. It might tell you something about who killed your boy. The strange man hands Denver a photograph. 35
  • 36. DENVER [narrator] He hands me a photograph. And it’s a sneaky picture of Jo with scars across the palms of her hands. DENVER Alright, so, who are you, exactly? STRANGE MAN I’m Steven. DENVER And how do you know Jo? STRANGE MAN I’m her gynecologist. DENVER You’re her— Oh! So um. Do you support women’s rights, or— and— STRANGE MAN Vaginas are a normal and non-weird body part, Detective. DENVER Right! Yes. Yes they are. Absolutely. Vaginas. LOGAN So what’s with the creep shot? Do you have lots of bushes to hide in your gynecology office? STRANGE MAN I took this at a family get-together. I’m a family friend, too. I was her mother’s gynecologist. 36
  • 37. DENVER (whispering) He keeps saying gynecologist. LOGAN (whispering) It’s a normal word. DENVER Right! But wait if you’re a guyyyy who’s a doctor— LOGAN Gottem. DENVER If you’re not suspicious, then why have we never noticed these scars on Jo before? STRANGE MAN She covers them up with makeup. I bet if you compare old pictures and new pictures, you’d see exactly when Jo started wearing that stuff to cover up the scars on her hands. DENVER But how would she stab Alaska while she was setting the forest fire? LOGAN And how did she hide it from the police? How would she patch up that scar without going to the hospital? STRANGE MAN Hey, that’s for you to figure out! I just wanted to step in as a civilian doing a good deed. But I will tell you— I don’t think the police tend to hate her. She’s got a PBA card, so that’s a start. 37
  • 38. The strange man’s watch beeps. STRANGE MAN That’s my alarm. Alright, it’s time to get back in the machine. Pick that up. DENVER [narrator] And Steven the doctor for people has us pick up the panel of the CT scanner and reattach it to the machine. Later on, Jeremy will recount that the nurse who ripped off the side of the scanner must’ve been fuckin ripped. Denver and Logan grunt as they pick up the side of the scanner and reattach it. STRANGE MAN Thaaaat’s it. There you go. There you go. Okay, now just push it in. There you go. DENVER What do we— y’know, what do we do now? Logan walks away. DENVER Jeremy? Jere— wait! Denver exits after Logan. 38
  • 39. HALLWAY. LOGAN We have to ignore that. DENVER Yeah. I agree. LOGAN I’m just wondering, where does he shit? But if— no, he— he has to shit. But I don’t think it’s in there. I, I have to go back in— DENVER Would she really put makeup on her hands every single day? LOGAN She also does her nails every week and rips off the nails when she gets called in by the fire department. But that’s, that’s not the point. DENVER Sure. Would she put the makeup back on every time she washes her hands? That seems insane. LOGAN Plus, he was hiding his own hands that entire time. DENVER [narrator] That’s mysterious. DENVER What, like he photoshopped his hands onto her hands? 39
  • 40. LOGAN (frustrated) Uh— DENVER I’m not making fun of you! I’m just tired. Bobby approaches. BOBBY [approaching] There you guys are! DENVER Hey. BOBBY [approaching] So Boo’s doing— he’s doing ok. I, I didn’t tell them anything. DENVER I know. I trust you. BOBBY And uh. Logan, Boo wanted you to visit. LOGAN I’m ok. BOBBY Are you sure? 40
  • 41. DENVER You can take a couple minutes to see Boo. We’ll be fine. Pause. LOGAN Fine. I won’t tell them anything. Logan walks away. BOBBY Denver. one quick thing. DENVER What’s up? BOBBY I’m thinking about this X symbol. And someone told me it’s the symbol of this, the, like the Colombo crime family— 41
  • 42. DENVER [narrator] Then Jeremy disappears from my audio— and he appears in Boo’s. HOSPITAL ROOM. Door opens. Logan enters. Closes the door. LOGAN Hey Boo. Um. Just wanted to bounce something off your head here. Do you ever think that maybe Bobby’s hand came off and it’s evil and maybe that’s the one that did all this? BOO I don’t wanna think about anything bouncing off my head anymore. That’s a real poor choice of words, Logan. LOGAN I kinda chose it that way. So were you guys, like, interrogating Bobby? BOO You weren’t there. LOGAN I bet it was hardcore. I bet he cried. BOO Jo wants to be the human lie detector. JO And that’s true. 42
  • 43. BOO She’s, uh. Pretty good at reading people. LOGAN Huh. Nice. I wish I could read. BOO Yeah, whatever. The, the… the yeah… like… Boo hums “Bury Me.” JO Come on, Boo! Ask another question! BOO That can’t be a name. Logan, did you kill Arle— Alaska? LOGAN Oh yeah. JO He’s lying. Boo hums. BOO Did you kill All, Al, Alaska? 43
  • 44. LOGAN No. So. It’s been good seeing ya. BOO Yo, just, just wait for a sec. What’s Denver doing? LOGAN I’m helping him investigate. Is that, like uh, a problem? BOO It won’t work unless— unless— unless solve it. Unless solve it. Mm? Mirror’s gonna just end everything unless Ar, Arll— LOGAN The way you talk is too messed up, bro. I don’t understand you. BOO Arlaska, Alaska, Alaska comes back able to talk and Arl-Alaska will only come back if the person that you perceive to be right in front of you solves the mystery himself. Do you understand? LOGAN I think so. Are you saying— are… Dude, I don’t understand you. That second hit gave you problems in your brain. You’re saying random words. BOO No! No! No! No! No! No! Just— shut up! Shut up! Mirror’s gonna end everything. Don’t worry about why. Only one person can solve the mystery and bring Arl-Arl-Alaska back. 44
  • 45. LOGAN Okay, I do get it. But that’s, that’s fucking weird. Why? Why would that… BOO Were you there to witness the killing? LOGAN No. JO He’s lying. LOGAN Cool. Wait are you gonna die? BOO No, gonna die if can’t figure out who killed (messing up) Alaska. That’s the thing, the creature, the person you perceive in front of you will die. With flesh and everything— that one. LOGAN Okay. BOO And you don’t have— You’re not saying anything, and— Don’t get, don’t get, why are, why are, YOU, why not expose— LOGAN I’m sorry. I can’t do this. BOO —why not say who killed, what killed, how, how killed— 45
  • 46. LOGAN This kind of blindsided me, I, I didn’t expect this. JO You didn’t expect us to ask you about Alaska’s death, the thing that’s Boo’s entire personality? BOO My entire personality? JO (unison) YOU SAID MY! LOGAN (unison) YOU TALKED NORMAL! BOO The— stop looking at! LOGAN I’ll just answer your question. Asking about Alaska’s death is fine. That’s fine. I didn’t expect the trolley problem when I woke up yesterday. Can Emma go for a bit? Can we switch out? I swear I’ll come back and I’ll talk your ears off. I just. I just need some time to think about how I’m gonna say this. Pause. LOGAN Yeah. Yeah, I’m just gonna go. An hour at most. Okay? Thanks, guys. 46
  • 47. Logan walks to the door. Opens it. LOGAN Hey Boo? BOO Hey idiot? LOGAN Talk up what you came here for. And— and you came here for a lot. You don’t need a reason to be confident. Boo sniffs. BOO Mhm. LOGAN Boo! Cur! Tis! Boo! Cur! Tis! Boo! Cur! Tis! Logan closes the door. LOGAN [muffled] Boo! Cur! Tis! Boo! Cur! Tis! 47
  • 48. BOO Was that true? JO Yeah. He actually got upset and he actually thinks he’s living the trolley problem. I think if he says he’s gonna be back he will. BOO Oh, didn’t mean that, or— no, that’s the important part, you’re right. (sniffs) Um… So what do you think? Did you pick up on anything that didn’t? JO Did I pick up on anything that didn’t? BOO Stooop. JO Nothing really, except… I mean you said something before about all the things I see and don’t tell you about? BOO Sure? JO Logan likes me. Like. Like a lot. BOO Like Logan has a crush on you? 48
  • 49. JO No. Actually, I can’t place it. Every time Logan looks at me, he feels an emotion I’ve never seen before in my life. It’s nothing like a crush or like love or anything. Honestly I don’t know how to feel about it. BOO Maybe he doesn’t either. JO Well that’s probably true. EMMA Logan’s not— BOO (unison) AH! JO (unison) JESUS! EMMA I said Logan’s not worth it. I’ve moved on by the way. JO How long were you standing there!? EMMA Probably five minutes. Can Xanax distort your sense of time? JO No. 49
  • 50. EMMA Can too much Xanax distort your sense of time? JO Maybe it can help you distort your way into a seat, Emma. BOO Great job. JO Shut up. Emma walks to seat. Sits down. JO Hey, before we talk, I’m gonna need a quick aside with Boo if that’s okay. EMMA (very high) Am I sitting yet? The continuous sound of Emma’s chair crashing into things. JO (whispering) Jesus Christ. I don’t know if this one’s gonna go so well. EMMA Hey! Hey guys! Look at me, am I sitting yet? Hey! Guys! Look at me, am I sitting yet? 50
  • 51. BOO That’s fine, we don’t have time— So Emma, did you— JO Listen, if we’re doing this, then let me talk to her alone. I wanna get a reaction out of her. BOO (trying to whisper) We could do that, or we could— together. EMMA Oh my god, I don’t know if I’m sitting. This is terrible. This is like. This is like blueballs for knowledge. JO Ohhh my god are you hearing this? Okay— It would be easier if I did it alone. Trust me, no, it’s fine. I’ll record everything for you. BOO Guess. Okay. But gonna be on the other side of the door. Like literally put ear against the door. JO Do whatever. I don’t care. I just want her to focus on me for a second. EMMA I know what blueballs is but I still don’t know what a penis looks like. BOO Gonna— (snorts) go to the bathroom, be right back. Boo gets up. Walks to a bathroom within the room. 51
  • 52. EMMA I drew a penis for Bobby and he said it’s still wrong. Opens bathroom door. Closes it. JO Why’re you so into Stump Town? What do you do there? EMMA I just hang out. I like nature. Yesterday I found a cool bug. JO What kinda bug was it? How cool was the bug? EMMA I dunno! It was a cool bug. It was big. JO Describe the bug, Emma! EMMA That shouldn’t matter! It was brown! It was brown and it was big! Most bugs are brown! JO How did you feel when you saw Alaska’s body? EMMA What? 52
  • 53. JO How did you feel when you saw Alaska’s dead corpse? EMMA I was traumatized! It was bad! So bad! It was a bad time! Stop yelling at me! Jo stands up. JO What’s wrong with you, do you go to a therapist or something? Tell me what’s wrong with you, because I want to know. I want to know, I can see right through you, and it creeps me out. I can see what nobody else sees, whatever I’m seeing, I’m seeing something! You can’t hide from these eyes! What the hell is wrong with you, Emma? EMMA I have a lot of feelings! And! Sometimes! Loud noises freak me out! And! When people yell at me! My head goes blank! And! I can’t think! And! I! I don’t remember! What you said now! I’m sorry! I’m sorry! JO (realizing) Are you acting right now? EMMA No! JO Yes, you are! 53
  • 54. EMMA No! JO Yes yes yes, you totally are! You’re such a liar! You killed him, didn’t you?! EMMA NO! JO I’m gonna tell Boo you killed Alaska! EMMA NOOO! Boo enters. BOO Jo. Jo sits down. BOO You didn’t have to do that. Where did Emma go? Did you scare her off? JO I guess, I did— When did she— Wait, where is she? 54
  • 55. Emma whimpers. BOO Do you have the bandwidth to apologize? JO It was fine. That was fine. Emma grabs the book and runs out. DENVER [narrator] Emma runs out with the book in her hands, and nobody sees her do so. She does that— she hides in plain sight. And now she’s off with the notebook that could solve the case, because she might’ve killed Alaska. BOO Jo, you successfully intimi— intimidated her, fucking fantastic job. That doesn’t mean that that was helpful. JO Boo, I can’t read Emma. Nurse 2 walks by in the hallway. 55
  • 56. NURSE 2 Is everything okay in here? JO Yeah we are good. We were just watching a video and the volume was set loud. NURSE 2 No worries. Just checking. Door closes. BOO What were you saying? You were saying something. You can’t read her? JO I saw Emma around in Stump Town. We were doing similar stuff at the time. We had similar goals. BOO What goals? JO We were working the market. BOO Wow, and you— 56
  • 57. JO You know, I know, but it’s not relevant. What’s important is that I kept my distance from Emma, because her emotions were weird and different. Kind of, blurry and unrecognizable. She was hiding her emotions from me somehow. And now I can’t read them at all. When my sister smiles, she’s happy. When you say you’re fine, you’re not. And then there’s Emma. With Emma, I can’t tell. BOO So can’t interview her. Can’t do anything. JO That’s right. BOO Jo. If Emma could’ve killed Arl, At, Alaska… Emma probably killed him. Is it wrong that considering that? Did you kill him? JO No. Did you? BOO Trying to understand the ques— question. Give a sec. Pause. BOO No. 57
  • 58. JO Huh. BOO It has to be Emma. It’s quiet. Do you wanna put music on? 58
  • 59. HALLWAYS. DENVER [narrator] And on our end, we still don’t know about Emma or her book. DENVER Alright, thank you for your time. NURSE 2 Sure. DENVER [narrator] And we don’t even notice Emma rushing past us. Emma rushes past. DENVER [narrator] Emma has her notebook in her hands. She rips out every single note about the podcast and throws the book into the trash. Emma’s ripping out pages. She throws the book in a trash can. DENVER Well, that was a bust. BOBBY Hey, I have an idea. 59
  • 60. DENVER [narrator] But Bobby has an idea. Bobby starts to root through the trash. DENVER Bobby, don’t— BOBBY Have we ever actually checked in the trash? LOGAN Ugh, no thanks! I just ate. You can have some, though. BOBBY My fortune cookie, it told me that one man’s trash… is another man’s treasure! Denver puts his hands on Bobby and starts to pull him away. DENVER Okay, come on— BOBBY Got it! A book! One man’s trash is another man’s treasure! Bobby opens the book. 60
  • 61. Denver takes it. DENVER [narrator] I take it out of Bobby’s hands. Simult: Bobby’s phone vibrates. DENVER Bobby— You got a text. BOBBY Can I have the book? DENVER Check the text. LOGAN Just check it. Bobby takes out his phone. BOBBY Emma says— no. No, it’s Jo. (pause) Boo wants to see me again. Bobby grabs his rain jacket. Walks off. 61
  • 62. DENVER [narrator] Bobby walks away without eye contact. DENVER Can I have some hand sanitizer? LOGAN Bro, it has been on the top of my purse waiting for this moment. Logan unzips his purse! LOGAN That’s a scary-looking book. Give it to me. I’ll throw it out a second time. Denver gives book. Logan gives hand sanitizer. 62
  • 63. DENVER [narrator] Boo and Jo are doing more to interview Bobby, but it isn’t going anywhere. HOSPITAL ROOM. BOBBY Um, so since you can tell when I’m telling the truth, I just wanna say that I did not stab Logan. Like I didn’t stab him. JO He’s lying. BOBBY If I, if I’m lying, I don’t know it— BOO Jo, how (mispronouncing) much do you know? That you just never shared? JO Bold of you to assume I’m paying attention. DENVER [narrator] But Jo does know a lot more than she’s letting on. BOBBY Hey, I’ve been thinking a lot about that X symbol. Like the one for the Colombos, the crime family, and I’m starting to wonder if it’s actually dark magic. Like what if it’s not a criminal thing at all— 63
  • 64. JO Oh! Bobby. Did you hypnotize yourself to forget the night Alaska died? BOBBY No. That’s just traumatic memory loss. JO (whispering) He’s lying. DENVER [narrator] While me and Jeremy are just perplexed by this book. 64
  • 65. HALLWAY. DENVER [narrator] Jeremy walks to the trash can. But before he drops the book, he opens it. LOGAN There’s no way. DENVER [narrator] And Jeremy approaches me with the book in his hands. LOGAN Look at this. DENVER [narrator] All of the pages are ripped out. Except that with all of the pages ripped out, there is still handwriting on the inner cover. It reads: “Remember, remember, the thirteenth of July, in 2019. When he was tossing and turning, he nearly scratched off his bandages, ‘that boy’ said he saw a glimmering weapon in the hand of a girl. He said more, but who can remember the rest?” LOGAN I just found this. DENVER Oh god. LOGAN Yeah. DENVER Is it a cursed book? 65
  • 66. LOGAN That’s the day Alaska died. DENVER It says “a glimmering weapon in the hand of a girl.” That can only be three people. LOGAN Yeah, but it can’t be Jo. She had an alibi. She was setting stuff on fire. DENVER And it can’t be Emma, since Emma was high. And I don’t think it was Glory… DENVER [narrator] Jeremy will later on call this the moment where he wavers. From this moment, he wonders if him and I are on the same side. LOGAN I’ll, uh, I’ll be right back. I hear a crying family I can kiss. DENVER [narrator] So he leaves, and he gives Boo a call. 66
  • 67. HOSPITAL ROOM. BOBBY Uh. I’m gonna head out now. BOO Hope see you later, Bobby. BOBBY You will! You definitely will. Boo. Boo, you will. Exits through door. Boo’s ringtone: “Fuck You Kyle.” Boo picks up. LOGAN [speaker phone] Boo, you’re not dead yet, right? BOO (gently) Aw man, it’s Logan. Day ruined. What’s going on? LOGAN [speaker phone] Hey we found a book. It says something weird in it. I’m gonna tell you what it says, okay? BOO Okay. Okay. One sec— Jo, can you write this down? JO Are your hands broken too? 67
  • 68. BOO Are your what? JO Alright, I’ll do it for you, you’re lucky I’m a sweetheart. BOO Thanks. Jo pulls a pad of paper out of her purse and writes. LOGAN [speaker phone] Alright, here’s what it says: “Remember, remember, the thirteenth of July, in 2019. When he was tossing and turning, he nearly scratched off his bandages,” dat boy “said he saw a glimmering weapon in the HAND (laughs) of a girl—” I’m just laughing cause Bobby doesn’t have a hand. That’s why. (wheezes) “He said more, but who can remember the rest?” BOO A glimmering weapon…? LOGAN [speaker phone] I don’t know about this. How about you? BOO Gotcha. What? How would know how you feel? Logan laughs, confused. 68
  • 69. LOGAN [speaker phone] Okay well Denver says it’s about what Bobby saw. I’m gonna go stand next to Denver while he does his thing so y’all do your thing. I’ll, uh, come talk to you guys soon, okay? BOO Take your time. JO Except don’t! BOO Right. Yes. LOGAN [speaker phone] See ya guys. Logan hangs up. BOO Bye, Logan. Bye. Bye… Goodbye. Uh, so Bobby saw a girl with a weapon. Oh. Emma… Oh jeez. Uh. Jo— Emma killed (struggling) Alaska. HALLWAYS. DENVER We need to find out if Jo had scars on her hand. 69
  • 70. LOGAN No, no she— she didn’t! Jo didn’t— Jo did not! LOGAN LAUGHS. LOGAN What’s wrong with you? Logan pushes Denver. LOGAN First of all, I have to stand here in this fucked up place where my best friend was killed forever, and now Boo’s gonna die AND YOU’RE threatening to take away (sobbing) the only one that’s left. DENVER (gently) Bobby seems to have a repressed memory of a girl holding a weapon. We have plenty of information that corroborates Emma being too high to function that night. So… LOGAN (stops sobbing) My eyes can’t cry! Haha… DENVER Uh, and… 70
  • 71. LOGAN I’m gonna talk to Jo and Boo about who actually killed Alaska. You go fuck yourself, Denver. Logan storms off. DENVER Jeremy, please. DENVER [narrator] Jeremy saw Alaska die. And that’s a strange reaction if Jo killed Alaska herself. But… all of it is so strange. Bobby should have recognized Glory, even from a distance. The two of them were best friends. Who knows, but Jo’s fire alibi could have some kind of loophole. Is Jo’s alibi really foolproof? I wanna revisit it again. 71
  • 72. EMPTY HALLWAY. Fast-walking. DENVER [narrator] I’m walking through the hallways when— DYLAN Ey! DAN Turn around. DENVER [narrator] (clears throat) I’m walking through the hallways when I’m stopped by Dylan and Dan. And I take note that Dylan is still holding that brown paper bag. DENVER Sorry? DYLAN Just get out of here! DENVER [narrator] And here’s probably the smartest thing I’ve ever done. I check how they’re standing, I look at the doors they’re facing away from, and I make an educated guess about what room they’re guarding. It’s a door on the left side. I make a RUN for it!— Dan grunts. 72
  • 73. DYLAN DUDE! You let him go right by you! Denver swings inside the room. Closes door. OPERATING ROOM. DENVER Hi! I’m really sorry. I just kind of ran in here on instinct. STRANGE MAN 2 You are early. DENVER Oh, I’m here by accident. I was just walking through the hallway and a couple guys threatened me. DENVER [narrator] There’s a surgeon by the window. He’s picking up all the surgical tools and looking at them in the light. STRANGE MAN 2 Are you an investigator? DENVER Yes? STRANGE MAN 2 Are you Finn Denver? 73
  • 74. DENVER Yes? STRANGE MAN 2 I’ve been trying to find you because I know a thing about what you’re investigating. There’s a rumor Jo had the means to set that fire from a distance. DENVER [narrator] Oh. Oh. That’s… possible. DENVER Where’d you hear this rumor from? STRANGE MAN 2 My gynecologist. I’m trans. DENVER From Steve? STRANGE MAN 2 Different gynecologist. Flashback! DENVER [useless flashback] (whispering) He keeps saying gynecologist. LOGAN [useless flashback] (whispering) It’s a normal word. 74
  • 75. DENVER Why do guyyys who are doctors care about whether Jo Magaro killed Alaska? STRANGE MAN 2 For the same reason you care. Right? Everybody has an opinion about the Curtis case. Everybody wants to see a resolution. That’s all I know. DENVER Is there a way out of this room that doesn’t go into that hallway? DENVER [narrator] It doesn’t matter if he’s right or not. It’s true that Jo could’ve started that fire from a distance. And if that’s true… Jo’s alibi could be moot. She could’ve killed Alaska. I need to see Jo’s hands. If she was the one who stabbed Alaska… then she would’ve split her hand open on the knife. I need to know if she’s been hiding those scars. And if she was, then that’s the end of this story. That is the answer to our question. And Boo doesn’t even know I’m coming. 75
  • 76. HOSPITAL ROOM. BOO Emma killed Arla— Alaska. JO You think so? You really think so? Emma killed Alaska? BOO Pass the, the ghost box! Boo clicks the ghost box. Static. BOO Emma killed Arla—Alaska. This has to be it. Tell! Tell! BOO 2 [ghost box] That’s not gonna work, dumbass. You have to know how. BOO No no no no no no no! You lied! You told have to know who killed Ala, Ala, Alaska! Was this all fake!? BOO 2 [ghost box] You can’t just say the name! I didn’t lie, it’s not fake! If you just have a name, you didn’t solve anything. It’s a random guess. Alaska isn’t back yet, is he. But you thought maybe it’s Bobby or Logan or any of them, haven’t you? You need to actually understand or this isn’t going to work! 76
  • 77. BOO Can you pease tell if it’s, if it’s Emma? BOO 2 [ghost box] No. Boo clicks the ghost box off. JO I got a text from Logan. BOO Yeah? Wait. Is he here? Door. NURSE 2 Visitor! BOO Thank you. NURSE 2 Of course. Nurse 2 closes the door. 77
  • 78. BOO Hey. LOGAN What’s up. Beat: Logan walks to a chair and sits down. LOGAN I thought about turning in the killer. I really honestly thought about it. But I can’t say it. BOO Please. Please… LOGAN Me and Alaska were talking. We were in his basement, your basement. We um… Yo, here, ok, I’m pulling something up to show you. DENVER [narrator] Jeremy pulls out his phone and he shows it to Boo and to Jo. LOGAN Show me your reaction to this. DENVER [narrator] And Jeremy shows them a corpse. 78
  • 79. JO Oh shit. BOO Don’t show this. Put it away. Put it away. LOGAN (laughing) It’s fake! It’s not real! BOO Well didn’t know that! Obviously! LOGAN I go to these kinds of websites a lot and stare at them. Have you guys ever heard of roleplays? JO Roleplays? What’re you, what’re you talking about— LOGAN Roleplays. Do you know about LARPing? It’s kind of like that. There are communities of people on the internet who do different kinds of pretend. There are roleplays where you pretend to be stabbed or roleplays where you’re kidnapped and held for ransom. Or roleplays where you pretend to die in a hole and nobody comes to your funeral— BOO What are you talking about…? JO Logan… Logan that isn’t normal…. 79
  • 80. LOGAN —or roleplays where your office job is so painful that it sucks out the last drop of joy while your parents beat the shit out of you or roleplays where you act like a snake under somebody’s foot. Surprise is usually a factor. Like you don’t know what’s coming. BOO Are you saying you and Ar, Ar, Alaska… LOGAN I didn’t say anything. You said that. I also didn’t say I was going to pretend to be killed— you know. For fun. BOO Logan, wha, wha— JO True. All true. BOO Sorry. You, you, you wanted Arla-Ah-Alaska to pretend to kill you? LOGAN The anticipation was so high… when I saw the knife… and then it went into Alaska. Everything started looking like a cartoon to me when his blood poured out like a— Logan laughs. And laughs. The laughing becomes screaming. Boo stands. 80
  • 81. BOO Logan, Logan, who did it! Logan Logan Logan, who did it! LOGAN! WHO DID IT! LOGAN I know now but I can’t say! I’m roadkill, man! I can’t say it! BOO Are you being held hostage!? LOGAN No! Just no- NO! I just can’t send anyone to prison! I can never do it! I wasn’t raised for this! BOO Is it Emma!? IS IT EMMA? IS IT EMMA? IS IT EMMA? LOGAN (laughing and screaming) I’m not gonna tell you! JO True. LOGAN I’m roadkill! I can’t tell you! Boo stomps off. BOO I’m going to the bathroom. 81
  • 82. IN-ROOM BATHROOM. Boo slams the door shut. Boo turns the faucet on. LOGAN [from the other room] We’re just playing around! Let’s just go back to telling fucking jokes! I think I shit my pants. JO [from the other room] False. Boo turns the ghostbox on. BOO 2 [ghost box] —broken. Bet you can’t think, can you? BOO Something’s wrong! Feel like everything he’s saying is testal—technically correct but something, something is wrong. BOO 2 [ghost box] Oh, so you can still think. BOO So you agree with! BOO 2 [ghost box] We’re usually on the same page. You just hate yourself too much for me to like you. 82
  • 83. BOO Can’t think! Can’t think can’t think. Have to remember to breathe and when think can’t remember to breathe! Please! Please, please, please, please just give some kind of hint. Please. BOO 2 [ghost box] You want a hint? Go to the lake, Boo. You might drown but you might find something down there. BOO You’re trying to kill. BOO 2 [ghost box] I sure am. But what if you beat me? BOO Try to convince Jo before you convince. Jo’s not gonna let out. Boo 2 laughs. BOO 2 [ghost box] I can help you. BOO You can help get to the lake? BOO 2 [ghost box] You can jump out this window. 83
  • 84. BOO THAT’S— BOO 2 [ghost box] You wanna save Alaska, don’t you? Don’t you wanna save yourself? Aren’t you tired of being depressed? Aren’t you tired of giving up before you started? It hurts to try but it hurts more and more as you rot away. I can help you get to the lake. BOO How!? BOO 2 [ghost box] I can’t teleport you. BOO Yeah. So how? BOO 2 [ghost box] But I can hold your bones together when you jump out that window. You saw Emma’s car in the parking lot. Her car’s windows are broken. It would be so easy to steal that car. BOO I’ll… I’m not coordinated yet. I could hit my head again. BOO 2 [ghost box] I can numb the pain when you do. BOO No no no no no. If hit head again, could be broken forever. Could lose everything left in me. 84
  • 85. BOO 2 [ghost box] But isn’t this what you wanted? BOO What? BOO 2 [ghost box] Didn’t you want that in the first place? To be nobody? Ringing. Boo struggles to open the window. BOO 2 [ghost box] Make sure you don’t yell. If you yell, they’ll hear you. Boo turns off the ghost box. OUTSIDE. And Boo jumps. Wind rushing through the microphone. Boo hits the ground. 85
  • 86. BOO THE LAKE! THE LAKE! THE LAKE! THE LAKE! THE LAKE! THE LAKE! THE LAKE! THE LAKE! 86
  • 87. DENVER [narrator] I arrive thirty minutes later. HALLWAY OUTSIDE BOO’S ROOM. Denver knocks. DENVER [narrator] Jo opens the door. Door opens. DENVER [narrator] She stares at me blankly. Jeremy calls out from inside the room. LOGAN Boo’s in the bathroom. DENVER Actually, I’m here to ask about— LOGAN He’s been in the bathroom for like half an hour. DENVER I’m here to check— 87
  • 88. JO Why are you staring at me? Logan knocks on bathroom door. LOGAN Boo! The detective’s here. Do you wanna talk to him or no? DENVER I’m not here for Boo. JO What is it? DENVER I’m here for you. I need you to show me your hands. LOGAN Guys! Boo isn’t in there. JO Boo? Boo!? Everyone stomps into the room. Denver bangs on the door. DENVER Boo? Are you in there? 88
  • 89. EMMA Guys? JO JESUS! Emma, how long have you been standing there? EMMA My car is gone. I said my car is gone. DENVER Then he has to be going to— LOGAN The lake. DENVER The lake! It’s happening all over again. DENVER [narrator] And without missing a beat, Dylan and Dan are in the hall. DYLAN What’s going on!? DAN Where’re we going!? DENVER [narrator] They pretend they weren’t trying to chase me off earlier. We meet Bobby outside. 89
  • 90. DENVER’S CAR. Logan is breathing quickly. LOGAN What’re we gonna do if we show up at the lake and Boo’s dead? What we do, even, legally? BOBBY He’s gonna be fine. DAN Just gotta move on. And keep living, for him. LOGAN Yeah! Fucking whatever! Thank you, lackey! I didn’t say that. DYLAN Jo. Does he know? Jo? Jooooo, does he knooooow? JO Dylan, stop it. Can you guys shut up while I try to manifest? Either manifest or pray, like what the fuck. DENVER Let’s do a role call. Do we have Bobby? BOBBY I’m here. DENVER Do we have Dylan? 90
  • 91. DYLAN Yo. DENVER Do we have Dan? DAN I’m here. DENVER Jeremy? I just heard Jeremy. LOGAN What? Uh— DENVER Jo? JO I’m here, hon. DENVER And Emma? Pause. DENVER Is Emma not here? Okay, who’s gonna text Emma that we’ll be back? 91
  • 92. BOBBY Wait, lemme check. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, Emma’s here. She just disappears sometimes. EMMA I’m just trying to have some privacy. JO Jesus FUCKING Christ! How long have you been there, Emma!? EMMA I’m trying to dissociate. LOGAN Oh my fucking god— can someone pull the earbuds out of my pocket and hand them to me? DAN Want me to pull them with my teeth? EMMA Logan, I am just not into you anymore! Logan opens the car door. Everyone screams. Logan closes the car door. JO LOGAN WHAT THE FUCK! LOGAN I wasn’t actually gonna jump out. 92
  • 93. Turn signal. JO Ok, ok, don’t park! Just stop here! Car screeches to a stop. BOBBY Ow. STUMP TOWN. Everyone gets out and starts running. DENVER Leave the door open! It’s fine! It’s my work car. They’ll replace it! NEAR THE LAKE. JO (calling for him) BOO! LOGAN Those’re his shoes! 93
  • 94. Jo dives into the water. DYLAN Jo! Do you want help? LOGAN She can do it. DENVER [narrator] I kick off my shoes. I won’t make this mistake again. I jump in. Denver jumps in. Water fills the mic. It breaks. DENVER [narrator] My microphone breaks. Me and Jo look around in the water. Then Dylan and Dan join us, and I have to watch one of them throw that paper bag above water. Boo is nowhere. Where is he? Actually, he’s above water. Sitting next to his microphone. And here’s the recording. LOGAN / BOBBY BOO! BOOOOO! Boo is sniffling. 94
  • 95. BOBBY [approaching] (crying) Boo! You’re okay! BOO Couldn’t do it. Afraid to die. So now just gonna die anyway. Jo surfaces from the water. Breathes. JO BOO! BOO! Jo climbs up onto land. That is a tattoo of an X symbol… as in. Like. The Colombo crime family. BOO The… the fucking MAFIA!? DAN Jo! Catch! Dan throws Jo the paper bag. It has something heavy in it. DENVER [narrator] Jo takes something out of that brown bag and raises it to the sky. Jo pulls it out. 97
