Jo cocks her gun. [Ringing.]
DENVER [narrator]
Jo’s gun is a 480 caliber Ruger Super Redhawk. I hope to live another day. I peek between my
fingers, but my hands are shaking. Let’s begin.
Reloading. Cocking the gun. Pulling the trigger— it fires, but the chamber’s empty.

—and also the first woman to ever become an official Made Man in any of the five families. Jo is
the main cause of cocaine’s resurging popularity in Nassau County, beginning in 2019 in the
Stump Town market.
JO
Hey! You ever tried coke?
EMMA
Oh I’m good! That’s so girlboss. Want some unprocessed opium?
JO
Uhhhh I’m good.
DENVER [narrator]
In the gardens of Roslyn Estates, we meet a woman who clawed her way to sit high on her throne
of dirt at the bottom of the food chain. Daughter to Romeo Staluppi, a wannabe killer without
victims, and the owner of the overpriced boot weighing on Jo’s back.
ROMEO
Say cheese!
JO
That is not a video—
ROMEO LAUGHS.

DENVER [narrator]
In the mafia, Jo is what you call a soldier. Her father is a capo, which makes him a lesser king in
their world. Jo got her start stealing tires off of cars and handing them over to family-owned car
dealerships for reselling.
BOO [2017 recording]
Wha— where did my tires go!?
BOO kicks his car with a GRUNT.
DENVER [narrator]
Now her entire career is proving that she deserves his title through petty scams and protection
rackets.
Jo is a standing soldier in a dying industry, and if this is a losing war, then Jo comes from
a family of cockroaches. Fifty years ago, a roach like Jo would not have opportunities in the
mafia. Not just because she’s a woman— but because she is a stubborn brute who throws temper
tantrums and hates authority. This is a bottom-feeder.
BOO is HYPERVENTILATING.
DENVER [narrator]
Allegations of Jo’s criminal activity include: arson, forgery, drug dealing, theft, racketeering, and
for the time being, suspected murder.

JO
(standard American accent) GET ON THE GROUND!
BOO / DENVER / BOBBY / EMMA / LOGAN

WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR ACCENT?
JO
GET ON THE GROUND!
The gun rattles in Jo’s trembling hand. Besides Dylan and Dan, everyone drops to the
ground.
BOO
Why’re you talking like that!?
JO
I’m 21 year old! Of course I don’t have a Long Island accent. The Jo you know is somebody I
made up.
BOO
Jo?

BOO’S BREATHING picks up again.
JO
Everybody take out your phones! Give them to Dylan and Dan.
They do. Dylan and Dan walk around gathering people’s phones.
JO
There you go.
EMMA
How long have you been in the mafia? Jo?
JO
Shut up. I’m thinking. Dan, phones in the lake.
DAN
(serious) Okay.
EMMA GASPS.
Dan throws their phones in the lake.
JO
Stand up! Do you guys see that tree over there? I want you to go over there and pray to that tree.
Go. All of you, go.

They begin walking serially.
JO
Walk to this tree here.
They do.
BOO
How long in the mafia?
JO
Before I met you.
Gathering by the tree.
JO
Circle up. All around the tree. Circle.
They start to do so.
Jo pushes them into place.

Bobby, over here— Come on. Now I want you to pray to the tree. Look faaaaar up into that tree.
You see all those branches? This tree is your god. If you look close, can you see it? How
beautiful it is? The seeds look like little angels. I want you to pray to this tree.
Jo shoots another warning shot into the sky.
JO
Pray! Out loud!
LOGAN (unison)
Please don’t let me be killed. I’m sorry for what Denver did. Please don’t kill me. I know I’ve
been smiling less. I’m sorry. I’ll do anything you need. I can help out. I won’t hesitate anymore.
DENVER (unison)
Protect, we ask you, O Lord, this house against the assaults of our spiritual enemies; and cause
the present dreadful disorder of the air to cease. We offer you, O Lord, our praises and sacrifices
in thanksgiving for the favors we have already received. Lord, please hear our humble
prayers; that we may rejoice in the ceasing of this unlikely storm, and always make a good use of

DENVER [narrator]
Boo feels something thin slip between his fingers. His hand closes around the object on a reflex.
He raises it to his face. Focuses his double-vision. He’s holding a photograph, slightly wet. It’s a
photo of Mother Mary, burned on the edges. The burn marks are old. Boo starts a thought and his
cerebral cortex flares up. His left hemisphere parts the spinal fluid to nearly kiss his skull and
suddenly he doesn’t know how this card got in his hand.
He feels lost where he’s standing, and a black spot is growing in the corner of his eye.
Think.
BOO / DENVER [narrator]
Think.
DENVER [narrator]
Boo’s vision is turning dark. This is a predictable symptom of brain trauma. But Boo is
determined to figure out this card. He asks himself: how long has he been holding this piece of
paper? He thinks. Suddenly a sensation comes to him: the card definitely slipped into one of his
hands. But which hand? By now, both of his hands are touching the card of Mother Mary in front
of him. But he realizes— his right thumb is on the right edge! His left thumb is near the center of
the card, and he’d only cover up the card like that if he was grabbing for the card blindly. That
means the card was passed into Boo’s left hand.
Now Boo glances to his left. Someone is standing there, on his left side. And as bad luck
would have it, his vision is getting too dark to see who it is. He can just repeat that word to
himself: Think! Boo will later compare this feeling to running into a wall. But as he looks to this
person on his left, he’s looking down instinctively, meaning he’s looking at someone short—

Emma. Boo puts together that Emma is standing on his left. Emma slipped Boo a wet card of
Mother Mary. So what would she be trying to tell him with a gimmick like this? Emma would
never communicate in code. Emma communicates in the most literal terms possible. Instead, this
card must be a tool for a practical purpose. Why did Emma hand Boo a picture of Mother Mary?
Think.
BACK TO SCENE.
BOBBY (unison)
You are an extraordinary tree. I am sorry for not noticing. You’re a very special tree. Graffiti is
really just a kind of prayer from person to person so you must be very holy. AHHHHHHH!!!!
AHHHHHHH!!!
EMMA (unison)
Thank you… for… your beauty… and… thank you… for… your oxygen… and… thank you…

DAN
How’re we gonna get out of this?
JO
Right. Well. Let’s play Russian Roulette.
LOGAN
You wouldn’t do this to me…
Jo pops open the cylinder. Spills out all the ammunition and re-inserts one cartridge.

Logan, do you wanna go first? Yeah? Come here. COME HERE.
Logan approaches.
JO
I thought you like this kind of thing!
Jo spins the cylinder.
JO
Everybody keep praying! Now let’s see who survives.
Jo pulls the trigger.
JO
Congratulations. Now go back to your god.

DENVER [narrator]
The card of Mother Mary is flexing gently under Boo’s thumbs. The feeling reminds Boo of a
word. Wet. The paper is wet! And it’s already drying in the sunlight. And that means nothing.
Think.
BACK TO SCENE.
JO
Denver! Come here!
Denver approaches.
JO
Denver, you have no idea what you’ve done. You fucked all of us.
DENVER [narrator]
Jo spins the cylinder. She puts the gun to my head.
Spin. Click.
DENVER [narrator]
And I survive. I’ll spend a lot of nights thinking about this moment. My hands shake.

The sound of a heartbeat. Water dripping in a cave.
DENVER [narrator]
And Boo sees my hands shaking. He’s seeing light and color and people and a beautiful tree. Boo
has the thought— everyone seems to be in some kind of intense situation. Why is Emma here?
She can disappear at any moment. After all, Emma’s version of being an Outsider is going into
hiding at will. Oh, Emma can disappear! And it’s not just that Emma goes invisible. She goes
unnoticed. Anything that Emma does can be ignored.
BOO / DENVER [narrator]
If Jo went into the water, and this card is wet, then Emma stole this off of Jo!
DENVER [narrator]
Emma could swipe the card out of Jo’s pocket, and Jo wouldn’t realize! But if this belongs to Jo,
then Boo recognizes this item. He’s seen cards like this in books and docuseries. La Cosa Nostra
holds initiation rituals.
A flame.
DENVER [narrator]
The newly “made man” is handed a card with a picture of a saint or Jesus or Mary herself.
DENVER [narrator]
Then the initiated burns the card up to ash, to show that family comes first, even before God.

Flame is extinguished.
DENVER [narrator]
That’s why this card is burned on the edges. But somehow Jo saved the card. She couldn’t stand
to burn Mary. And after all this time, she still carries Mary around with her.
EMMA / DENVER [narrator]
In her wallet.
DENVER [narrator]
That’s when Boo, quietly, says this:
BACK TO SCENE.
BOO
Jo is really religious.
DENVER [narrator]
I hear that while Jo shuffles me back to the tree. Boo’s brain is overworked and I see his eyes
powering down in the small translucent vulnerability on the right side of his goggles. Now it’s
my turn to think.
JO
Bobby! Your turn!
The sound of a heartbeat. Water dripping in a cave.
DENVER [narrator]

Why is Jo doing this? I think we broke a kind of code of silence when we found out she was in
the mob. But why is her reaction Russian roulette? I’m playing Boo’s game now, in their world.
Chess pieces moving.
YOUNG BOO
Check.
BACK TO SCENE.
DENVER
(terrified, but brave) Jo, you can stop now. You don’t have to keep going.
JO
Go back to praying, Detective.
DENVER
Except you’re not going to shoot me, and I appreciate that— or at least, I hope you’re not gonna
shoot me.
JO
Oh really!? You think so, really!?
Jo begins to load a new bullet into her gun.
DENVER

Let’s stop playing this game and find a happier ending. Jo, I… I know what you’re doing. Boo
figured it out.
BOO
Who?
DENVER
You’re praying… that we won’t get shot.
JO
Why would I, why would I do that.
DENVER
Otherwise, why wouldn’t you just shoot us?
JO
You don’t know what you’re talking about— stop acting like you’re in my head.
Logan drops to the ground.
LOGAN
Ohhh thank god. Thank god. (explaining his reaction to the others) Jo’s eye is twitching— that
happens when she lies!
JO
How do you know that!?
DENVER (interrupting)

(relieved) Jo! Put away the gun.
EMMA and BOBBY CHEER in relief.
JO
Stop! Not everything is about you, and your own survival instincts! I also have to live! Nobody’s
recognizes how hard I tried to get this asshole and his beautiful hair off our backs! There’s no
way that’s just me.
BOO
Who has beautiful hair?
JO
You! You! You’re the prettyboy!
BOO
You’re a prettyboy?
JO
NO!
JO GRUNTS.
DENVER
How long do we have left, Boo?
JO

DENVER

BOO HUMS “BURY ME.”
EMMA
(terrified) Boo doesn’t— ugh! We have twenty-four hours or probably some more. Sorry.
DENVER
Let’s postpone this for twenty-four hours. I think you’re saying didn’t kill Alaska.
JO (interrupting)
I didn’t kill him.
DENVER
Do you care about solving the mystery anymore?
JO
That thing isn’t even Boo, though. There’s no point in saving him.
BOO
What thing?
JO
I guess I’m a little curious. (pause) You think you can solve it in twelve hours?
DENVER

JO
I’m gonna speak with my associates and we’ll come to a decision. C’mon, let’s talk!
Dylan, Dan, and Logan approach.
JO
That’s Dylan and Dan. Logan, I barely even know you.
LOGAN LAUGHS.
LOGAN
Oh, sorry I thought the gun thing was an initiation. Okay, sorry, my bad.
DENVER [narrator]
We stand by the tree; ready to pray.
DENVER
(whispering) Ok so this is where we decide if we’re gonna run or not run.
EMMA
(whispering / shivering all over) And they still have a gun.
LOGAN
(whispering) Guys that gun thing was really stressful, right?
EMMA

(whispering / shivering all over) Should we run? I don’t know!
BOO
(whispering) Ohhh my god Jo’s friends put, put, put that guy in the hospital. Ughhh, that’s why,
the, the—
LOGAN
(whispering) Welcome back.
BOO
(whispering) Who was that?— P name.
LOGAN
(whispering / genuine) Do you mean Peppa Pig or Pete Cantu?
BOO
(whispering) Um?
EMMA
(whispering) Bobby’s not responsive by the way… I think we hit one of his triggers…
DENVER
(whispering) Should we run or no? Emma, no-looky-at-bug. Emma!
EMMA
(whispering) I’m with you! I ALSO want people to shut up!
DENVER
(whispering) Emma Wooten, do you wanna run? We’re gonna lose our chance. We’re gonna lose
our chance. Pick! 5, 4, 3, 2—

DENVER
(whispering) Ok I’m the birthday boy and I decide and I pick run.
Denver starts fast-walking.
DENVER

Everyone runs.
JO [distant]
HEY! YOU COME BACK OR I’LL SHOOT!
Running.
JO [distant]
I’LL SHOOT YOU RIGHT NOW!
DEEPER WOODS OF STUMP TOWN.

EMMA, LOGAN, BOO, BOBBY, and DENVER BREATH HEAVILY.

(breathing heavily) Can we hide in the Greenhouse?
GREENHOUSE.
Running “in”side.
EMMA, LOGAN, BOO, BOBBY, and DENVER CATCH their BREATH.
DENVER
(breathing heavily) Let’s call the cops…
Boo takes a seat.
EMMA
(breathing heavily) How?
DENVER
(breathing heavily) I’ve got my phone in the car.
LOGAN
(breathing heavily) You told me to leave the car door open.
DENVER GROANS.
LOGAN

(breathing heavily) You know what’s funny? This was a really bad day to wear my corset.
LOGAN WHEEZES out a laugh. It’s a conversational laugh. But breathless & stressed.
BOO
(breathing heavily) Just letting you know. There’s 24 hours before the end of everything.
Pause.
Strange sound.
EMMA
(breathing heavily) Um. Did you guys just hear that?
BOO
Hear, the, heard what?
EMMA
(breathing heavily) It kinda sounded like a metal door? (pause / breathing) I’m sorry, that was
distracting… I’ve heard that sound before… I heard it… the night Alaska died too. While me and
Alaska were getting high in the Greenhouse.

While we were in the greenhouse, I heard a metal door below me. Maybe it really was Harvey
Paris… trying to open his cast-iron coffin…

BOO

EMMA
I mean, that can’t be the ghost of Harvey Paris? In the ground?
BOO
24 hours.
EMMA
Yeah. (muttering) I don’t know why I thought that…
Denver stomps on the soil. Feeling it out with his feet.
LOGAN
Be careful.
DENVER

I’m checking if there’s something under here.
Pause.
DENVER
Where did the door sound come from?
EMMA
The ground.
Simult: Denver walks to Boo and squats in front of where Boo (POV) sits.
DENVER [narrator]
I stoop in front of Boo. I need his input.
DENVER
Emma heard a sound in the Greenhouse. It came from the ground. It sounded like a metal door.
What does that mean?
BOO
Sssss… Sss…
DENVER
Let me try again. Take your time. You’re standing on soil, and you hear a metal door below you.
What could that sound actually be?

Rapid chess moves. But they’re glitching.
BOO
It’s a metal door opening under ground.
DENVER
Do you think it could be a metal coffin?
BOO
No. No— a door wouldn’t sound like door with soil and soil and. No, under the ground. Maybe a
basement under feet.
DENVER
Like another room? (to Emma) It’s not in the soil, it’s UNDER the soil! Is there a room under
here, under the Greenhouse?
EMMA
Yes! The Greenhouse is on top of the Jailhouse!
DENVER
THAT’S A CLUE!
EMMA
The stairs are broken but they were two floors in the same building!
DENVER

That night, you heard a sound from the crime scene! Emma! Is there a metal door in the
Jailhouse?
EMMA
I don’t think so…
LOGAN
That’s super weird. No there’s not.
DENVER
Can I have that?
Denver takes the mic from Boo.
DENVER [narrator]
We look over the side of the Greenhouse to the broken stairs and that’s no option. We take the
long way around to the Jailhouse.
DEEPER WOODS.
Moving through the brush.

LOGAN
Shh.
DENVER [narrator]
Very. Carefully.
JAILHOUSE.
Everyone’s looking around.
DENVER [narrator]
We’ve got no metal doors in the Jailhouse. There’re no doors.
EMMA
(a careful volume) Oh! The oven.
DENVER [narrator]
Emma steps over to a rusty, broken-down oven in the room’s corner.
She closes it.
EMMA
(a careful volume) That’s it. That’s the sound.
Denver walks to Emma. So does Logan.
DENVER

(a careful volume) An oven. This isn’t what I thought you meant.
EMMA
(a careful volume) This isn’t what I thought I meant but this is the sound.
She opens it and closes it.
DENVER
Let me see something.
Denver opens the oven. Looks inside.
Pulls out the gun.
DENVER [narrator]
I find Jo’s gun in there.
DENVER
(a careful volume) This is Jo’s gun. That’s what you heard today, this is the gun.
LOGAN
(a careful volume) Oh my god.
DENVER
They were hiding this to cover their tracks. Guys, we have their gun now. I-I’m gonna take out
the bullets.

Denver takes out the bullets. Puts them in his pocket. Puts the gun in another pocket.
DENVER
(a careful volume) So you heard this same oven close the night that Alaska died. I’m trying to
figure out why someone would walk into the room, close an oven that doesn’t work anymore,
and leave. They could’ve been hiding something.
LOGAN
(a careful volume) I think someone was in there.
Pause.
DENVER
(a careful volume) What?
LOGAN
(a careful volume) Actually, no. You know what? Nobody was in there. I didn’t say that.
DENVER (interrupting)
(a careful volume) Emma, try to get in there.
EMMA
(a careful volume / suddenly crying) Okay.
Emma starts climbing into the oven.

DENVER
(a careful volume) Try to smoosh inside.
EMMA
(a careful volume / crying) Okay I’m climbing inside.
EMMA continues, GRUNTING.
EMMA
(a careful volume) I’m too juicy.
LOGAN
(a careful volume) You’re a little bone man.
DENVER
You guys, stop it. Don’t make me laugh right now.
EMMA SNIFFLES and wipes her tears.
EMMA
(a careful volume) You know who’s smaller? I bet Glory could’ve fit.
BOO
GET GLORY! (hyperventilates) GET GLORY AND ALICE! Where!? Are they!?

DENVER
Getting Glory isn’t a bad idea. Someone fits in the oven? They have a perfect way to get the
jump on Alaska. You hide, pop out, attack. We get Glory, we check the logistics of her possibly
stabbing Alaska.
EMMA
Boo took my car earlier. It’s probably in the parking lot.

DEEPER WOODS.
Moving through the brush.
DENVER [narrator]
We walk Emma across Stump Town, quietly, through the brush. When we find the parking lot,
we also find her car parked diagonally in the middle of the asphalt. No sign of Jo and her boys.
My car is gone. I notice my hands are shaking again. And I think it’s funny.
We consider piling in the car and leaving Stump Town behind, but we agree to save Boo.
We decide to solve the mystery, and that means Emma has to leave and come back with Glory.
(pause) And Boo is left alone to sleep.

JAILHOUSE.
LOGAN
Sleep well.
BOO
Thank you.
Logan walks away.
BOO
Alaska… gonna save Alaska…
LATER.
BOO
Hey Mirror. If Jo isn’t friend, can you be friend?
LATER.
BOO
Found some chalk. Now a picture.
LATER.
Boo is drawing with chalk.

That’s funny. Who is that? Drew somebody who looks like Alaska, except… Who is he?
LATER.
BOO
(singing) Little Boo Curtis, where are you going? Up in the air? Everywhere? Do you head for
Heaven, or Hell, or somewhere in between? What is your wish? Will it finally be granted, a quiet
voice, a “boo” in the night? Will you be satisfied then? When nothing is left?
DENVER [narrator]
We shove Glory’s body into the broken oven.
BOO is WEEPING in the corner.
DENVER
(straining) Take her legs— Take her legs.
EMMA
Don’t hit her head.
LOGAN
I got ‘er. I got ‘er.
GLORY
Kite. Lite. Might. Good night. The stars will shine at the bottom of the sky and good night. I, me,
my, mine. Someone needs their way home. Come back. Come back to me. I’m alone anymore.

DENVER [narrator]
We take a moment. We pat each other on the back.
BOO WEEPS.
EMMA and LOGAN LAUGH in some nervous relief.

Mainly the lake. Everything happening here is an inevitability. This was necessary. But that’s
why it’s concerning me that cause and effect got broken by a force we don’t understand. What

person. You just wanted to keep lying. Lying about who you are, deep inside. You can’t face it.

His left hemisphere parts the spinal fluid to nearly kiss his skull and suddenly he doesn’t know how this card got in his hand. He feels lost where he’s standing, and a black spot is growing in the corner of his eye. Think. BOO / DENVER [narrator] Think. DENVER [narrator] Boo’s vision is turning dark. This is a predictable symptom of brain trauma. But Boo is determined to figure out this card. He asks himself: how long has he been holding this piece of paper? He thinks. Suddenly a sensation comes to him: the card definitely slipped into one of his hands. But which hand? By now, both of his hands are touching the card of Mother Mary in front of him. But he realizes— his right thumb is on the right edge! His left thumb is near the center of the card, and he’d only cover up the card like that if he was grabbing for the card blindly. That means the card was passed into Boo’s left hand. Now Boo glances to his left. Someone is standing there, on his left side. And as bad luck would have it, his vision is getting too dark to see who it is. He can just repeat that word to himself: Think! Boo will later compare this feeling to running into a wall. But as he looks to this person on his left, he’s looking down instinctively, meaning he’s looking at someone short— 14
