501 Commons Washington State Nonprofit Technology Needs Survey
The Washington Nonprofit Technology Needs Survey was distributed to 2,567 nonprofit organizations in the State of Washington. The survey was open to individuals in a wide array of positions at a wide array of nonprofits across the state. The nonprofits represented were diverse in industry-focus, size, and location in the state of Washington.
The survey had a response rate of approximately 15%, which is considered an adequate sample, and a total of 392 respondents. Of these respondents, 91% were reached through 501 Commons’ contact list. The other 9% were reached through a separate survey, which was distributed to nonprofits not associated with 501 Commons.
The following were the objectives of the survey:
Gain an understanding of Washington nonprofit technology use trends.
Identify key opportunities given technology needs identified by Washington nonprofits.
Understand how Washington nonprofit technology planning operates as a subset of their strategic planning.
Provide feedback to 501 Commons on their performance in the marketplace.
Data Placemats: Construction and Practical Design Tips
Increasing stakeholder involvement throughout the evaluation lifecycle, not only enhances stakeholder buy-in to the final evaluation results, but it also ensures that the evaluator is taking into consideration multiple viewpoints to be able to provide a more comprehensive picture of a program or initiative. Data placemats, a data viz technique to improve stakeholder understanding of data, can be used to communicate preliminary evaluation results during the analysis phase of the evaluation life cycle. When done correctly, it offers stakeholders an opportunity to form their own judgments about the data and weigh in prior to the final report. In this session, the presenter will review the concept of data placemats, focusing specifically on the nuts and bolts of constructing a data placemat.

In this presentation you will learn about design tools and techniques to solve wicked problems, using Systems Thinking.
Systems Thinking looks at the whole of a system rather than focusing on its individual parts, to better understand complex phenomena. Systems Thinking contrasts with analytic thinking: you solve problems by going deeper, by looking at the greater whole of a system and the relations between its elements, rather than solving individual problems in a linear way via simple cause and effect explanations.
You can apply Systems Thinking principles in different situations: to understand how large organisations function and design for the enterprise (e.g. when you are trying to revamp a large intranet), but also to solve social problems and issues (e.g. unemployment with disadvantaged youth or mobility in larger cities). So basically whenever there is complexity and conflict (of interest) in your project, Systems Thinking will be helpful.
After an introduction to Systems Thinking and its core concepts, we will first explain and practice a few techniques that you as a designer can apply to better understand complex systems, for example creating a System Map and drawing Connection Circles. In the second part of the workshop, we will introduce techniques that help you shape solutions, for example using Paradoxical Thinking for ideation and writing ‘What-if’ Scenarios.

1. What Initiatives and idea did you choose and why? How did you feel about choosing external versus internal initiatives? (Hint: you should analyse and evaluate the rationales for your decisions)
I have chosen 3 different initiatives based on the availability of budget and time I have and based on external and internal problems. The first initiative is “A boot camp characterized by an internal team form different departments” this will take about 3 weeks and 15,000 to achieve the intended purpose. This initiative was the best choose for me I felt that to gather the best employees from the company and try to come up with best solution was the most relevant initiative. The firm allocated a budget making it the most expensive initiative carried out and a reward price was awarded to the top three most creative ideas from the team. Second in order was “Post questions to The Citizen Sun social media followers “ I chose this initiative a part of solving a problem is to ask the customers what they needs and what they want to improved, by doing this we could solve the main issues like if we know what the costumers want we can work on it and as a result we will have new customers and we will not lose our old customers. The second reason of choosing this initiative is to get close to the customers who are using digital and print news. As showing in the background of the citizen Sun company 32% of the customers are using digital and print news which are high number who could help to get some relevant ideas to improve the issue of web traffic. The third initiative is “Run a special project with leading advertisers” I felt the to come up with special project and work with the advertiser’s leader would solve the problem because the issue is all about ads revenue and when you work with the specialist of this problem they could figure out a new idea or a new innovation to get out of this problem.
As a product manager, I also analysed the overall impact of each initiative to the performance of the firm and came up with a well consulted decision which was to go with an idea in initiative one as follows. The final idea I chose was creating an innovative channel from a reputable video sharing website provided video editorials which helped capture the tech savvy audience. Combines trust-based sharing and collaborations with high level of expertise. This idea is effective as it has a manageable risk level and a cost that is relatively medium and can be incorporated into the business. The implementation of the idea used up only 72% of the budget. It is not time consuming. In order to incorporate this idea, different target audience, different approaches and innovations were effectively put into place.

This initiative was the best choose for me I felt that to gather the best employees from the company and try to come up with best solution was the most relevant initiative. The firm allocated a budget making it the most expensive initiative carried out and a reward price was awarded to the top three most creative ideas from the team. Second in order was “Post questions to The Citizen Sun social media followers “ I chose this initiative a part of solving a problem is to ask the customers what they needs and what they want to improved, by doing this we could solve the main issues like if we know what the costumers want we can work on it and as a result we will have new customers and we will not lose our old customers. The second reason of choosing this initiative is to get close to the customers who are using digital and print news. As showing in the background of the citizen Sun company 32% of the customers are using digital and print news which are high number who could help to get some relevant ideas to improve the issue of web traffic. The third initiative is “Run a special project with leading advertisers” I felt the to come up with special project and work with the advertiser’s leader would solve the problem because the issue is all about ads revenue and when you work with the specialist of this problem they could figure out a new idea or a new innovation to get out of this problem.
As a product manager, I also analysed the overall impact of each initiative to the performance of the firm and came up with a well consulted decision which was to go with an idea in initiative one as follows. The final idea I chose was creating an innovative channel from a reputable video sharing website provided video editorials which helped capture the tech savvy audience. Combines trust-based sharing and collaborations with high level of expertise. This idea is effective as it has a manageable risk level and a cost that is relatively medium and can be incorporated into the business. The implementation of the idea used up only 72% of the budget. It is not time consuming. In order to incorporate this idea, different target audience, different approaches and innovations were effectively put into place.

This programme is made up of 20 community or voluntary organisations all wanting to exercise a more strategic influence in their neighbourhood. They provide step-by-step advice on how to evaluate a community project which will be of interest to a wider audience.
What is evaluation?
Put simply, evaluation by members of a project or organisation will help people to learn from their day-to-day work. It can be used by a group of people, or by individuals working alone. It assesses the effectiveness of a piece of work, a project or a programme. It can also highlight whether your project is moving steadily and successfully towards achieving what it set out to do, or whether it is moving in a different direction. You can then celebrate and build on successes as well as learn from what has not worked so well.
Why evaluate?
Although evaluation may seem like an unnecessary additional task if you are already short of time and resources, it can save you both time and resources by keeping participants focused on, and working towards, the ultimate goal of the project. If necessary, it can refocus activity away from unproductive or unnecessary work.

Purpose
To produce both a Facebook page and a Twitter account to serve as the social
media face of the SIGHCI organization.
Scope
This project can be broken down into two main areas of development: content
creation and user development.
Content creation will cover background research regarding SIGHCI, areas of
academic research and events of primary interest, and social media used by similar
groups. Working with Dr. Coursaris, we will conduct an analysis of the primary fields
of interest to SIGHCI members using related publications and associated
conferences. We will also construct a timeline of conferences and similar events of
primary interest to develop a timeline for automatic and manual postings to maximize
user engagement. A competitive analysis will also be done of similar organizations
with social media presence to assist in the development of the two accounts. Finally,
we will develop documentation outlining future content creation based on our
findings in the aforementioned areas.
User development will focus on maximizing the outreach of, and engagement with,
the SIGHCI social media accounts. Using the previously mentioned research into
user and interest overlap between academic organizations, we will develop
relationships with other groups for cross-promotion purposes. We will also construct
a list of methods for increasing visibility among these groups. Using data from early
content postings, we will refine this documentation to ensure continued performance
after the end of the project.
Improving Connections & Performance

Starting your own business with “Lean start-up” :
Lean startup is a methodology for developing businesses and products, which aims to shorten product development cycles and rapidly discover if a proposed business model is viable, because the primary objective is to have a safe cash flow which then can be invested in risky developments.
Central to the lean startup methodology is the assumption that when startup companies invest their time into iteratively building products or services to meet the needs of early customers, the company can reduce market risks like creating a complete product that doesn’t appeal to the customers or like creating a lot of features that are not used or required by the customers. So the advantage is that there is no need for large amounts of initial project funding and expensive product launches and failures. This is done with two techniques :
A minimum viable product “MVP” (similar to a pilot experiment) is the version of a new product which allows a team to collect the maximum amount of validated learning about customers with the least effort
A split or A/B test is an experiment in which different versions of a product are offered to customers at the same time. The goal of a split test is to observe differences in behavior between the two groups and to measure the impact of each version on an actionable metric.
Customer feedback during the development of products or services is integral to the lean startup process, and ensures that the company does not invest time designing features or services that consumers do not want. Customer feedback is measured through two processes, using key performance indicators and a continuous deployment process.

Federal Ideation Community of Practice (iCoP)
The iCoP is a trans-governmental community of practice that promotes the use of ideation tools, which are web-enabled technologies that allow users to submit, review, comment on, and rate ideas. It was established in 2009 at the White House's request to improve government performance using social media. Several federal agencies have implemented ideation tools, including the Transportation Security Administration's IdeaFactory, the State Department's Sounding Board, and the Centers for Disease Control's Idea Lab. The iCoP meets monthly to discuss topics like tool selection, implementation, engagement, and metrics. Membership is open to any federal employee interested in learning about ideation tools.

- 2. This space can be used to communicate with users of the site. Categories are based on the goals in the 2010 – 2015 Strategic Plan.
- 3. Employees can track the popularity of ideas in real time with various statistics. Great ideas will be address a problem and suggest steps towards implementation. Dialogue in the comments section often includes suggestions to improve ideas or discuss potential barriers.

- 7. Idea Lifecycle 5 The voting capability will capture the wisdom of the crowds and identify the best ideas. These ideas will then enter the review process to determine if they should be implemented. Idea is Highly Rated Idea is identified as a Hot Topic Idea Enters Review Process Idea is Submitted Idea is identified as a Quick Hit Idea remains on the site Idea does not receive many votes Note: Highly rated ideas will be the top X% in each category based on idea activity. Hot Topics could be Secretary or OMB initiatives and Quick Hits will be identified by SPM and Program and Support Offices. The number of Hot Topic and Quick Hit ideas will vary

Idea enters review process 1) Strategic Planning and ManagementReview: Goal: Initial Review to ensure idea is actionable 2) Office Review: Goal: Program/Support Office review for viability and effectiveness 3) Cross Functional Review: Goal: Verify idea is in compliance with all rules and regulations if necessary 4) Implementation: Goal: Coordinate and oversee implementation of accepted ideas Idea will not be implemented and a response is provided on the site with an explanation
