Asher had originality when he was a child, but as he grew older he started to conform to the rules of the community. Fiona tried to conform to the rules of the community, but Jonas showed her how to have fun and how to learn to love. No one gets to celebrate a birthday on the day that they were born. No one is taken care of by a biological family. Everyone is assigned to family units and the people in these units have no relation to one another. There is also a ceremony of release where people get lethal injections. Everyone has a specific job in the community.
