Out of all the advice I have ever been given, I think that the most valuable I have ever received is try your hardest and never give up. After all you
have done, at the end of the day, if you have not applied your very best, what is the point of showing up? If the task set before you is a sports game
or a school assignment, don't give up before it's even started. Even if you don't succeed, you will know that you put forth your best effort, but next

Welty writes, "With her hands on her knees, the old woman waited, silent, erect, and motionless, just as if she were in armor" (318; 85). However,
Phoenix manages to regain her senses after a few minutes, explaining to the nurses, "It was my memory had left me. There I sat and forgot why I
made my long trip" (318; 88). She continually takes her personal shortcomings in stride and has an obvious wit about her, which she uses to her
