for the poor majority
by collaborating with the Romans for their own
benefit.
Many of the poor were driven out from their land
due to heavy taxes.
It was in this context - background that Jesus
set out on His Mission

8. Jesus and the Jewish Institutions
1. Synagogue and Temple are special
places of worship.
The centers of Jewish religious instructions.
The weekly Sabbath service was held at the
synagogue- like our present-day parish
Church.

10. Every town, village had at least one Synagogue-
a meeting place for prayer.
The Synagogues housed the sacred scrolls,
which were under the care of the elders of the
community.
There is only one Temple in Palestine. It was
located in the holy city of Jerusalem.

15. Sacrificial offerings - the heart of temple worship.
Faithful Jews made pilgrimages to the temple of
Jerusalem every year to celebrate their feasts and offer
their sacrifices.

17. Jesus upheld the Synagogue and the Temple.
Jesus went regularly to the Synagogue- (Luke
4:16)
The temple was special for Jesus: His parents,
Mary & Joseph presented Him to the priest in
the temple.
At the age of 12, Jesus joined His parents
on their trip to Jerusalem to worship in the
Temple. (Lk 2:22-33)

19. Jesus observed the Jewish Prayer Life He used the
prayers of the Jewish culture and observed the
rituals and feasts of the Jewish year.
20. The Jews offered prayers of Praise to God
three times a day: in the morning, at three
o'clock in the afternoon, and in the evening.
Both at dawn and nightfall, the Jews recited
the Shema- their creed of faith.
21. Jesus taught on the Sabbath
The seventh day of the week was set aside
by the Jews for rest and worship.
This is the Sabbath day. During the time of
Jesus, keeping the Sabbath was very
complicated because of the strict rules and
legalistic attitude of the Pharisees and
Scribes in keeping the Sabbath. "The Sabbath
was made for man, not man for the Sabbath."

23. The Jewish festivals
Jews observed national and religious celebrations
with thanksgiving and joyous feasting.
The feasts of the Jews had a strong communal
character since they believed that their unity as
one nation depended on their being called by God
into a covenant.
The greatest of their feasts was the Passover- the
Jewish miraculous liberation from Egypt.

25. Jesus Upheld the Torah
The Torah, which is the Jewish name for the
"Law," is made up of the First five books of the
Old Testament.
The Torah is also called by its Greek name- the
Pentateuch The Torah represents the heart of the
Jewish religion.
Jesus showed that the true spirit of the Law is love.
We follow them because we love God and our
neighbor.
