6. What is an entrepreneur?
What is enterprise?
• Enterprise: the ability to handle
uncertainty and deal with change
effectively
• Entrepreneur: someone who starts
and runs a business and has
responsibility for the risks involved.
11. People who aren’t
entrepreneurs
Bad entrepreneurs Good
entrepreneurs
Are very cautious – never
want to take any risks
Ignore risks – assume their
own charisma/skill will
guarantee success
Take calculated risks, weighing
up the potential risks and
rewards
Assume that things are the
way they have to be
Rush to bring in something
new or make huge changes
Launch new ideas in response
to changing consumer tastes
or attitudes
Like to be sure of next month’s
pay cheque – and the one
after … until retirement!
Trust that things will go as
planned, spend freely at the
start as they are sure the cash
will start flowing tomorrow
Accept that the early days of a
new business may be very
tough, so try to spend as little
as possible
13. Plenary
Do you think that
real entrepreneurs
are born (i.e they
have the right skills,
self-confidence and
attitudes from
birth) or made (i.e
anyone can learn
the skills)?
