Global air travel has increased tremendously over the last decade. Airports contribute directly and indirectly to air pollution through activities like construction, vehicle traffic, and operations. Common pollutants produced include carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, and secondary pollutants that can cause pulmonary diseases and affect health and visibility. To monitor air quality, smart airports deploy sensors to continuously measure pollutants and integrate the data with weather monitoring. This allows them to plan mitigation strategies, issue warnings, and ensure safer operations while working towards a more sustainable future.
