Not too many people enjoy taking any kind of tests.
Some students actually have something referred to as
test anxiety. Students whom have test anxiety might
do fine in the classroom, have great grades the entire
year, but get
so nervous
during stand-
ardized tests
that they
freeze. Hav-
ing butter-
flies in your
stomach is
natural. Just
relax! The
teachers have prepared the students well and our
curriculum is standards-based...so the information
that has been taught is aligned with the test. Thus,
there is no need to cram. Get a good night’s sleep.
Eat a hearty and healthy breakfast. Remember what
has been taught. Follow the tips that have been dis-
cussed. And RELAX!!

Students study for tests all of the time. You, as par-
ents/guardians can make this process more successful by
stressing the importance of your child’s education. Please
stress with your child the importance of completing their
classwork, the importance of completing their home-
work, and the importance of following the instructions
and advice of their teachers. If students are working
hard in school, preparing for the NJ ASK standardized
test becomes even more easier. Just like taking a bunch
of vitamins the night before a physical examination with
your doctor will not make you look healthier, cramming
for the NJ ASK the night before will not bring success.
Your child’s teachers have prepared them well and, with
your assistance, the students will succeed on the NJ ASK
tests because of their preparation.

2. Your child’s teachers have prepared the students
well through their daily classroom lessons. In addi-
tion, teachers have been doing varying types of test
preparation. Thus, as parents/guardians, please
don’t worry about “cramming” a year’s worth of
information into a few weeks or even nights. In-
stead, review with your child the Parent, Student,
and Teacher Information Guide that we have sent
home. This guide will answer some of the questions
that you might have about the test and allow you to
see some sample test questions. Go over the ques-
tions and answers with your child.
Reassure your child,
as the test approach-
es, that it is absolute-
ly normal to get
nervous before a
test, especially stand-
ardized tests. Also,
reassure them that
there will be some
tough questions and
it is not expected that they be perfect.
Remind your child, though, of how important the
test is. It is important for several reasons. The test
results will help us to see how your child is growing
and, at the same time, allows the school district to
assess how well it is educating the children.
Rest Up…A good night’s sleep before any test is
essential. Make sure your child will be well rested,
alert, and have a clear mind on the day of testing.
Eat Up…A healthy (protein-rich), but light breakfast
is also very important. A large breakfast might make a
child sleepy. Not enough to eat, though, will be dis-
tracting. Good nutrition helps with concentration and
allows the students to perform better.
Dress for Success…Dressing comfortably
can benefit your child as well. Feeling comfortable
leads to success. Room temperatures can very, so lay-
ers allow for the ability to adjust to the room.
Stress-Free...Be sure that your child has a stress
-free morning. Make the morning a pleasant one as
they head to school. Remind them to be confident,
relaxed, and ready to succeed!
 Listen to all of the instructions carefully
 Know how much time you have, pay close atten-
tion to the time , and use your time wisely
 Review the whole section to see what lies ahead,
section types, and number of questions
 Read each set of directions carefully, paying close
attention to every detail
 If you come across a difficult question :
1. Don’t spend too much time on one question
2. BUT, don’t skip it either
3. Give an educated guess if multiple choice,
mark it, and come back after you finish
 Don’t fall into the trap of looking for patterns
 Don’t get distracted by other test takers in the
room, especially if they finish before you
 When done, be sure to check over your answer
sheet to make sure nothing was skipped
 Erase mistakes thoroughly
 When completing writing sections, be thorough
and remember there is partial credit
