Leadership in Health Promotion Programs:
Leadership Skills: 5 traits that I think are the most important for leaders to possess and
why.
In this essay, I describe 5 qualities that I think are the most important for leaders to
possess. Traits are defined as a general characteristic that may include a person motives
or capacities (Healey & Zimmerman, 2010). The five qualities that I choose are as
follows:
1. Vision
Good leaders should have vision and be outstanding at strategic planning. They
should have the ability to perceive their future plans with an exciting idea of their
progress and accomplishment would look like (Brian, 2012).
2. Courage
Courage is a good leadership trait, because e it shows that ability to take risks in
every commitment you make and every action in the achievement of your goals
with no assurance of success because in business and life there is no assurance
(Brian, 2012).
3. Integrity
Honesty is very important for any leadership role in in everything they do, both
internally and externally. Integrity is based on truthfulness which requires that
you always tell the truth, to all people, in every situation because it is the
foundation the trust that is necessary for the business success (Brian, 2012).
4. Humility
A good leader should possess humility because it shows some level of self-
confidence and self-awareness i.e. willing to admit you could be wrong and that
you know you may not have all the answers (Brian, 2012).
5. Cooperation
Good leaders are excellent communicators because they cannot lead a group of
people if they cannot communicate with them. The capability to get everyone
working together is necessary to leadership success (“Five Traits of a Good
Educational Leader”, 2014).
