4. DEFINITION
Voiced consonants are consonant sounds that are made by vibrating the vocal
cords.
Voiceless consonants do not use the vocal cords to produce their hard,
percussive sounds. Instead, they’re slack, allowing air to flow freely from the
lungs to the mouth, where the tongue, teeth, and lips engage to modulate the
sound.
5. VOICED AND VOICELESS CONSONANT
SOUNDS
• These consonants are voiced and voiceless pairs
/p/ /b/, /t/ /d/, /k/ /g/, /f/ /v/, /s/ /z/, /θ/ /ð/, /ʃ/ /ʒ/, /ʈʃ/ /dʒ/.
These consonants are voiced /h/, /w/, /n/, /m/, /r/, /j/, /ŋ/, /l/.
