2. Søren
Kierkegaard 2
• (5 Mei 1813-11 November
1855)
• a Danish existential writer,
dedicated his life to
explaining what it means to
exist through authentic
choice.
3. For
Kierkegaard, the typical
individual moves through
three stages
3
(1) The
æsthetic stage
characterized by
immediate pleasure,
whether sensual or
intellectual, (e.g.,
egoism or
hedonism)
(2) The ethical
stage marked by
the individual’s
commitment to
duty (e.g.,
Stoicism, religious
law)
(3)The religious
stage
characterized by
faith (e.g., the
“leap”
characterized by
subjectivity and
paradox).
For Kierkegaard, this third context of
existence
is truth defined as “an objective
uncertainty held fast in an
appropriation-
process of the most passionate
inwardness is the truth, the highest
truth
attainable for an existing individual.”
4. Characterize
Faith By
Kierkegaard 4
According to Kierkegaard, faith is a
subjective, personal, passionate
interestedness in attaining eternal
happiness, as found through
appropriation. Faith is a category of
decision-making in which an individual
confronts an “either-or” situation, either
accepting or rejecting subjectivity.
5. The difference
between the
sacrifice of money
and the sacrifice of
ethical
responsibility 5
Sacrifice of money
when we save money with difficulty then our family
needs it for important things and we give it, including the
sacrifice of money
Sacrifice of ethical responsibility
when we help our families it is already an ethical
responsibility
Ethical responsibility is more valuable because when we
make sacrifices Ethical responsibilities indirectly make
financial sacrifices too
6. the difference
between faith
at the time of
abraham and
at the
present
moment 6
because Abraham has a reputation as a
great man - so whatever he does is
great, but if someone else does the same
it is a sin . If faith cannot make it sacred
to sacrifice for one's son, then let the
same judgment be given to Abraham as
it does to others.
7. The difference
between “faith for
this life” and “faith
for the afterlife”?
Can't one have
both? 7
Faith for this life
make us to have to always do good for
example to help people
Faith for the afterlife
our responsibility for what we have done
in this life to God
for example in Buddhism is called karma
8. the difference
between ethics and
faith
8
• ETHICAL is acting in a way that is done by what
society and individuals do usually think that it is a
good value that includes justice, honesty, equality,
dignity, diversity and individual rights
• FAITH are assumptions and beliefs that are
considered correct by an individual or group,
regarding concepts, events, people and certain things.
