Functions
• Is to lend force, to bring stress in a sentence, to make
it easier for the reader.
• To add richness to writing that will have an effect on
the reader.

4. Simile
Is the figure of speech that directly compares two
things. Similes are in a form of metaphor the
explicitly use connecting words through these
specific words that are not always necessary .
We use “as” and “like” to state a simile.
E.g. Her mind is like a sponge.
5. Metaphor
It is the type of figure of speech in which direct
comparison is made between different objects
without use of the word “as” or “like”.
E.g. his words cut deeper than a knife.
6. Personification
It is that type of figure of speech in which human
characteristics are given to ideas, animals or objects.
E.g. the sun smiled down to us.
7. Hyperbole
It is a figure of speech that uses sentence
exaggeration to make a point or show emphasis.
E.g. I walked a million miles to get here.
8. Oxymoron
It is a figure of speech in which two opposite ideas
are joined to create an effect.
E.g. there was a love-hate relationship between the
two neighbouring state.
9. Symbolism
It is the figure of speech that has meaning in its self
but sand for something other
E.g. Red rose- symbolizes love and romance.
10. Paradox
It is a statement that contradicts itself, or that must
be both true and untrue at the same time.
E.g. you can save money by spending it.
11. Alliteration
It is the repetition of same consonants sound at the
beginning of the words which occur together.
E.g. The tall tree.
