2. TO BE DISCUSSED:
• Physical Education definition
• The First Aid Kit Box
• Warm-ups and Cool downs
• Physical Education activities
• Benefits of engaging in Physical
Education activities
3. WHAT IS PHYSICAL EDUCATION?
• Physical Education is the sum of benefits
that come to individuals through
movement. Which simply means for you to
see results in PE you should learn to move
physically instead of relying in theory.
• It is a subject that believes in teaching
learners healthy life styles from an early
age so that they do not risk their health in
the future. Although it encourages learners
to be healthy from within, its main focus is
physical fitness.
4. THE FIRST AID KIT BOX
• This is a small/portable box or bag or package that has all the supplies you need
to treat minor injuries including cuts, bruises, burns, and sprains.
• It is essential that every school invests in these because they are so much of
help especial during sports or physical activities.
• It is important that learners are taught how to use the first aid kit box and have
access to it.
• The first aid kit box may include: Dressings and bandages (gauze role, sterile
gauze pads, eye pad, roll of adhesive tape, elastic bandage for sprains, sterile
cotton balls and swabs) Over-the-counter medicine for cuts, burns, and injuries.
5. WARM-UPS AND COOL DOWNS
• Before any physical activity can take place these are the most important
aspects you should stress to your learners before and after every physical
activities.
• Warm-ups are short activities or exercises undertaken prior to a more intensive
exercise or activity. Warm-ups are intended to prepare the body for movement,
including exercise, sport, dance, and stretching.
• Warm-up exercises may include: Jumping jacks
Leg swings
Lunges, walking, etc
6. WARM-UPS AND COOL DOWNS
CONTINUATION…
• Performing warm-ups before an intense warm-up activity helps to prepare the body for movement. Warm-up allows
the body to gradually increase its heart rate, breathing, and body temperature, which increases blood flow to the
muscles. Preparing the body in this way reduces muscle soreness and the risk of injury. Warm-ups also help prepare
the heart and the cardiovascular system for the increased demand that is placed on them during exercise.
• Cooldowns exercises are performed at the end of a workout to reduce intensity and bring your body back to its
resting state. For example, after a run, you might taper the speed over 5-10 minutes until you are at a slow walk.
• Cool down exercises may include: Cross-body shoulder stretch, child pose, low-lunge hip flexor stretch, etc.
• Cool down exercises are important because When you work out, your heart rate and blood pressure increase. This
allows the body to pump blood (and oxygen) to the muscles fast enough. As we exercise, the movement helps to
pump the blood back to the heart.
• When you skip your cooldown and jump straight from a high intensity workout to a complete stop, the sudden drop in
heart rate and lack of movement can cause the blood to pool in the muscles instead of returning to the heart and
brain. This can shock the body and lead to dizziness or feeling faint. Cooling down prevents this from happening!
7. PHYSICAL EDUCATION ACTIVITIES
• Physical education has different activities to ensure that learners/students
lead a healthy lifestyle while enjoying their lessons.
• Physical activities can be defined as any movement that requires the use of
energy excluding sitting still or lying down.
• These physical education activities include: Dance, gymnastics, Basketball,
tennis, soccer, netball, water aerobics, walking, yoga, aerobics, etc.
• It is important to mention that physical education does not only support this
kind of activities only, but it also supports or includes indigenous games such
as kgati, intonga, kho-kho, etc.
• Indigenous games are relevant in Physical Education because they make
learning relevant to learners’ cultural knowledge and world views.
8. Benefits of engaging in Physical Education
activities.
We can confidently say that PE is not just a subject and it should not be treated as a minor subjects because it helps learners a
lot.
Firstly, PE helps in building learners’ self-confidence. This is done through exercises, once a learner know that they are leading
a healthy lifestyle/are losing they are most likely to have confidence.
It helps learners build relationships amongst themselves through team work
Helps learners be more socialites
Helps them mentally or intellectually because they learn to take calculated risks/decisions
It prevents learners from getting sick frequently
And last but not least, learners get to see their strong points and decide on their careers
9. CONCLUSION
• Making healthy life decisions
should be taught from the lower
grades of schooling which can
help learners decide what they
want for themselves and their
health, hence PE is important.
• Do not forget that a healthy/fit
body does not only come from
doing physical activities but it
also requires a healthy eating
plan/diet.
