2. What is it?
Manifest destiny was a belief during the 1800’s that the
United states was meant to stretch from coast to coast.
The idea was initiated by an article written by John L.
O’Sullivan from the “United States magazine and Democratic
Review” in July of 1845.
The belief was not only that the US territory should stretch
from coast to coast, but its ideas of liberty and “individual
economic opportunity” should as well.
3. What were the impacts?
It fueled the idea of native American removal.
It started western settlement.
It started the war with Mexico.
5. Territorial Acquisitions
This is a map Of the US and the land gained between 1783 and 1853. Due to the idea of manifest destiny, the United States soon
reached coast to coast.
