âAutumn is the an dote to s ďŹing Summerâ
Quote by Terri Guillemets
What an excep onally hot and dry August we have experienced, some may not
have experienced such a drought before, and some may remember summer 1976
- another very hot and diďŹcult me.
I hope September is kinder in weather for us and oďŹers the perfect intermediary
between the end of Summer and the beginning of Autumn.
The club has just had its 44th
Annual Hor cultural Show on the 21st
August , the
ďŹrst open show since 2019, and it was great to be able to open again.
RHS ps for September:
¡ Divide clump forming herbaceous perennials and annual grasses such as lily of
the valley, asters, geranium, Hemerocallis to ensure vigorous plants
¡ Collect seeds, most seeds germinate best if sown as soon as they ripen, from
hardy annual ďŹowers such as honesty, calendula, love in a mist, ammi majus.
Grow on to small plants to over-winter in a cold frame or unheated
greenhouse. Or keep seeds in a paper bag to sow next Spring.
¡ Cover leafy vegetable crops with bird-proof ne ng
¡ A er Autumn raspberries have fruited, prune back the old canes to soil level
¡ Most hedges can have their last trim or pruning at the end of the month
¡ Towards the end of the month remove the remains of annuals, fork over the
soil and fer lise to replenish the soil and make ready to plant Spring bulbs.
