*Your student membership is covered by your university
Good morning. I’m Jordan Osborn, from the IET, the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
Thanks for coming along. We’re going to spend about an 30 minutes together today and I’m going to introduce you to the IET and some the benefits of IET membership. We will also take a look at ‘professional registration’, which you will become more familiar with once you are working in industry. .
The reason I am here with you today is that the university is an Academic Partner of the IET and realise the importance of you becoming a member of the IET from now, so much so that, they are paying for you to be a student member of the IET while you’re studying here.
The usual cost of this is £50.
If your course is accredited by the IET, this means we have approved the learning you will be taking on board, which is one of the things you will need when you apply to the IET to become a professional engineer later in your career and use the letters after your name to show you are a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer.
While you are working towards achieving your degree the IET will provide you with products and services that will help you during your studies.
Hopefully you’ll want to carry on your membership afterwards as you progress through your career and apply for professional registration when you’re ready.
We’re the largest engineering institution that awards professional registrations, with 155,000 members around the world and we operate in 153 countries.
We’re the only multi-disciplinary engineering institution and our focus is on several key sectors – The Built Environment, Design and Manufacture, Digital, Innovation and Skills, Energy, Engineering Safety, Healthcare and Transport
The IET has 500 members of staff but in addition, many of our members, around 4000, volunteer for roles with the institution which I’m going to tell you a bit more about later.
So a quick glance at who the IET are;
The IET is the only multi-disciplinary engineering institution
We’re also the largest engineering institution that awards professional registrations, with 168,000 members around the world.
We focus on 5 key engineering sectors -
The Built Environment, Design & Production, Energy, Transport and Information & Communications
Many of our members, around 4000, volunteer for roles with the institution which I’m going to tell you a bit more about later.
The photo here is of one of our STEM ambassadors. A key mission of the IET is to inspire the next generation of engineers and technicians and many of our activities focus on this.
IET.tv is our video service for our members and offers the world’s largest collection of engineering and technology videos.
It’s a source of engaging and inspiring content from leading academics and influencers.
You can watch seminars from universities and research institutions worldwide, access interviews with leading experts, lectures and presentations from all major IET events and bite-sized content like news, product demonstrations and showcases.
The E&T is our award-winning members magazine that covers all types of engineering and technology – featuring analysis, news, innovations and job announcements.
Curated by our specialist editors, we cover all sorts of topics across our key sectors.
The IET Library is part of our Knowledge Centre which can be found in the heart of London, managed by our professional and welcoming team.
We also have a virtual library where you can search for Ebooks and Ejournals
The IET also run over 1700 events across the world annually. Perhaps a course you might want to attend to help with your development, a seminar on a specific subject you might be interested in or some other sort of award or networking event where you can meet other IET members.
Being a member of the IET gives you opportunities to get more involved with our industry.
The IET runs a variety of campaigns to change the image of engineering and promote the wider profession.
From inspiring future generations of engineers to tackling equality, diversity and inclusion, we aim to address the key issues our industry faces and engineer a better working world.
Our awards programme includes awards for individual excellence, research and innovation, scholarships, travel awards, prizes and competitions within the engineering and technology sector. Every year we run our Apprentice of the Year awards which you could be nominated for.
Our centrally located conference and meeting venues in London and Birmingham offer well-appointed meeting spaces with the latest audio-visual equipment.
Lots of members are interested in connecting with other engineers & other members, sharing information with likeminded people and building a network of industry contacts.
To enable this we have IET communities – We have Technical communities who’s interest is in specific areas of engineering or technology and Local Communities, or ‘IET Local Networks’ all around the world.
These communities have physical events which you can attend and a lot of activity is held online.
They have their own online news feeds and online forums where you can contact and share information with others share the same interest.
We have a Young Professionals Community who our younger IET members often join up to.
As students on IET accredited courses, the expectation from you future employer when you leave university will be to qualify for a professional registration qualification.
Here you can see the four Professional Registrations that the IET assess for.
Chartered Engineer, Incorporated Engineer, Engineering Technician and then another technician registration for those working in an ICT discipline, ICT Technician.
The abbreviated letters here denote the designatory letters awarded to successful applicants, which I’ll tell you more about later.
For those of you considering a placement year, you could potentially leave university not just with your degree but also a professional qualification, EngTech (or ICTTech) which will really make your CV standout.
The standard that applicants need to reach to be awarded these registrations is set out by an organisation called the Engineering Council.
This standard, the UK-SPEC, is used by all engineering institutions who assess for these registrations.
So, if you’re a Chartered Engineer with the IET, you are deemed the same level as any other Chartered Engineer who has achieved it through another institution such as the IMechE, the ICE, the IChemE, etc.
So why become professional registered.
Well firstly, this will help you stand out from the crowd – Engineer is not a protected word so anyone can say ‘I’m an engineer’ but that could mean just about anything in regards to knowledge and experience.
However, by achieving a registration you are immediately able to demonstrate your level of professionalism as an engineer or technician.
The letters that you add to the end of your name on business cards, email signature, your CV give you instant credibility with your industry peers, your employer, clients and suppliers.
They show you are an expert in your field to a recognised professional level of competence.
It can improve career prospects and help you move up the career ladder as it also meets a growing requirement within our industry. It’s a marketable concept for your future company, can help to win business and sets out a standard of professional development that the company can tap into to help you grow as engineers.
And it helps your company to succeed.
But more importantly for your, it dramatically improves your career prospects and what naturally comes with more career opportunities, but a good salary. A professionally registered engineer is apply to command a competitive salary.
So I have discussed, why become professionally registered, but how do you get there?
We use a framework by which these qualifications are assessed, UKSPEC. The acronym stands for United Kingdom Specification for Professional Engineering Competence
Developed by the Engineering Council in collaboration with industry and academia, with the idea that the framework was to cover all areas of being a rounded engineer or technician
It’s not just knowledge or technical expertise:
A – You will have to provide evidence as to what extent you’ve developed your Engineering Knowledge & Understanding during your career to date
B – Showing what you’ve done with and how you’ve used that knowledge – How you’ve applied it in practice
C - Exactly what it says – Management skills - managing yourself, resources, budgets, other people – in addition for Ceng demonstrating a level of leadership
D – Interpersonal skills – Effective projects are about good communications and how people work together (during the interview for CEng/IEng our assessors will also be looking at how well you communicate)
E – Knowing the code of practice that effects your industry and working with and abiding by them
As part of the assessment of competence A, the IET assesses applicants for their Underpinning Knowledge and Understanding (UK&U)
This assessment helps decide if they have the right level of technical knowledge required for the registration they are applying for.
The expected benchmarks for UK&U are set against academic engineering courses.
For EngTech/ICTTech this is a level 3 qualification, such as an NVQ3 or equivalent.
For IEng an accredited bachelors degree
For CEng an accredited bachelors plus a top up accredited masters or an accredited masters of engineering.
So one way of demonstrating you have the required UK&U is by having one of these qualifications. If you do have one this is a straight forward ‘tick in the box’.
I would like to highlight at this point that you can still potentially become CEng professionally registered without a Masters. This would be obtaining your Bachelors then show other evidence of learning from work-based learning, such as:
Providing detail of the work/projects you’ve been involved in which demonstrates to the assessors a level of learning needed to do it.
Details of technical reports or technical presentations they’ve written
Training and other learning during the course of their work experience
Career Manager is the online system where you apply for professional registration.
It’s accessed via the IET website, once you’ve set up your own username and password.
A few things to note about Career Manager:
All the information that you add into the system is held on a secure and backed up server and because it is password protected can only be viewed or edited by you.
The Career Manager system is designed to be very intuitive and simple to use and full guidance notes are available at each stage, but if you have any questions about using it there is a dedicated Career Manager team who you can contact for help.
As well as being able to assess your own competence against the UK-SPEC standards for each of the professional registration categories and apply for the one you want to, Career Manager also offers IET members an area to plan, record and declare Continuing Professional Development, Enrol in or confirm you were part of your company’s IET Accredited Professional Development Scheme or apprenticeship scheme (if they have one) and keep an up to date CV for yourself.
It’s also where you can apply for Fellowship of the IET too.
Here you can see where you can assess your competence against the UK-SPEC, to decide if you’re ready to apply.
In this example, assessment against CEng. You can see that for each competency area, with full explanation and guidance notes, you can decide to what level you are currently at, with level 3 being where you need to be for each competence area in order to be ready to apply for that professional registration.
If you’re not ready, then the system will save your current competency levels, so you can revisit at a later date to update them when you gain more experience.
I would like to stress at this point that this is not being pushed by IET or your University. this is an expectation from the companies you will be looking to work for when you leave university. This is a handful of the companies IET work this who strongly value the importance of professional qualifications.
If you haven’t already scanned and submitted your form, then please do it now. Once you have completed, I can confirm this on the system ., before you leave. If you any of your fellow students who couldn’t attend today’s session but would like to complete the form, request them to contact your internal university IET contact to access this form.
