Constitution & By-Laws
Academic Year 2015-2016
Article I – Name of Organization
The name of theorganization shall be “Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Club of WSU”.
The nick name or abbreviated name for the club will be “WSU Brazilian Jiu-jitsu”
Article II – Affiliation
The Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Club of WSU will have no affiliates unless there is a request to have an affiliate, the affiliate will
oblige with the rules of affiliation with the organization as follows:
If an organization has any national, state, or local affiliation, this organization shall be affiliated with the
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Club of WSU and shall abide by its constitution and by-laws. The constitution and by-laws shall not
be in conflict with Washington State University policies and procedures. WSU policies and procedures shall take
precedence over the constitution and by-laws of the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Club of WSU.
Article III – Purpose
The purposeof theBrazilian Jiu-jitsu Club of WSU shall be to educate the WSU community on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
techniques for their use of competition, self defense or exercise.
Article IV – Membership
Section 1:Regular membership. Voting members of this organization shall consist of regularly enrolled full-
time undergraduate, graduate students and or faculty of Washington State University
Section 2:Honorary or associate membership. Non-voting members may consist of WSU employees or non-
students
Section 3:Non-discrimination clause. Consistent with all applicable federal and statelaws and University
policies, this organization and its subordinate bodies and officers shall not discriminate on the basis of race,
color, age, religion, veteran’s status, sex, national origin, sexual orientation or disability in its selection of
members.
Section 4:Dues. If members of the organization pay dues, include information regarding when the
organization determines theamount of dues and theapprovalprocess or membership support to increasethe
dues.
Article V – Officers
Section 1:Officers of the organization shall be as follows: President, Vice President, Co-Chair and Secretary.
Organizations should have the necessary officers to run the organization and conduct business effectively and
efficiently, but not so many that it hinders the organization’s ability to be effective and efficient.
Section 2:Election of officers. A member will be nominated to be an officer upon that member volunteering
to fulfill an officer position. Voters will consist of all current long-term members or just officers. Elections
will take place through the organization’s Facebook page or at a regularly scheduled meeting. The Executive
Board of the student organization will be elected every academic year or semester if an officer has to resign
from their position.
Section 3:Officers shall take office by theend of thefirst month of the semester and shall serve for as long
as they choose, unless replaced or resigned.
The removal of an officer requires a vote of all other current officers following notification of the officer in
question.
2. Article VI – Advisor
Section 1:Method of selecting advisor. Advisors for student organizations shall be selected from among the
faculty, staff, or administration.
Section 2:Theadvisor must take an active role in assisting the student organization achieve its mission and
purpose.
Section 3:Theadvisor will be responsibleto provideany advice the officers or members ask of them
regarding running the organization or any Jiu-jitsu techniques. The advisor will act as a liaison between
Campus involvement and theorganization he/she is advising.
Article VII – Meetings
Section 1:A regularly scheduled general meeting shall be held at least 2-3 times a week. Theofficers may
call additional meetings when theneed arises.
Section 2:A quorum shall consist of 2-3 members present at any regular or special meeting to conduct
official business.
Section 3:A quorum shall be present in order for any official business to be conducted. Official business
shall include election of officers, setting of dues, and other major decisions.
BY-LAWS
• MEMBERSHIP
Requirements-All members must be a current student orfaculty memberofWSU.
Resignations- Allmembers (except officers)can resign from the club anytime they wish to, without
engaging in any processes.
Expulsion- Any members who engagein any formof assault (physical,verbal,etc.) at meetings will
eitherbe given one warning to stop theiractions orbanned fromthe organization for a full academic
semester. Any members who do not stop theirsubmission orchoke hold when theiropponent taps out
will be subjectedto the same disciplinary action.
Rights – All members have the right not to partake in any physicalactivity at a club meeting and
observe instead.
All members have the right to tap out (submit to defeat,stopthe match)with theiropponent,anytime
they so chose.
Duties-All members have the duties ofengagingin safe grappling with allothermembers,and will
engage in the fighting style of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu when grappling with anothermember, unless given
permission to engage in anotherfightingstyle by an officerortheir grappling partner.
All members must respect theiropponent’s right to tap out and immediately stop theirsubmission or
choke when theiropponent doestap out,otherwise they will be subject to disciplinary action by any
officers at the meeting.
• DUES ANDBUDGET
-Amount,collection procedures, any specialfees,when payable, and the procedure forapproving,
reviewing amending will all be matters that are taken care ofby the officeror officers that are the most
knowledgeable with the RSOaccount systemand procedures.Anyquestions orconcerns regarding
handling money will be discussed at a regularmeeting orthroughthe organization’s Facebookpage.
• DUTIES OF OFFICERS
Powers- All officers will have equalpowerto teach andshare Jiu-jitsu techniques with all members,
and engage in disciplinary action ofany members who go against theirduties.
Responsibilities-
3. Attendance- A minimum of one officershould be present at allmeetings unless allofficers
have a reasonable excuse to be excusedfroma meeting regarding academic work, vacation,
injury, sickness,etc.
Disciplinaryaction- The following are actions thatany officercan chosefromthat they feel
is fit to addressdisciplinaryaction to any members who go against theirduties by committing
assault,engagingin anotherfighting techniquewithoutan officer’s ortheiropponent’s
permission,orignoring theiropponent’s tapout (right to endthe match).
- The member will be given one warning and ifthat warning is ignored,they
shallbe asked to leave the meeting but informed that theycan come back
when they want to uphold themembership duties.
- The member will be given no warning and shallbe asked to leave the meeting
but informed that they can come backwhen theywant to uphold the
membership duties.
- The member will be given one warning and ifthat warning is ignored they will
be banned fromthe organization fora full semester.
Communication- Officers are responsible forcommunicating with all club members over
Facebook,orwith each otherto give notice ofany meeting cancellations.
RSObusiness-The officerthat is most knowledgeable with the business associated between
Student Involvement and RSO’s will be responsible fortaking care ofall matters related to
registering and renewingthe organizationas an RSO,keeping the RSO active and all other
related matters.
Substitute-If both the President andVice president are not able to attenda meeting,the other
officers will take overand run the meeting in theirplace.
Specific job descriptions-
President &Vice President-The presidentand vice president will run the meetings and
And be mainly responsible forcommunicating with the organizationwith notices ofmeeting
cancellationsand allpostings on the Facebookpage.
Filling unexpiredterms of office-
Officers will take a vote and fill any empty officerposition with the memberthe organization
seems best fit forthat officer’s duties.
Removal from office-
Any officerwho goes againstmembership duties will be subject to disciplinary action by
anotherofficerto the same context as a regularmember. The officer can be removed from
theirposition ofoffice,banned orsuspendedfromthe organization regardingthe decisionof
disciplinary action held by the decision consulted froma discussionhelp by allotherofficers
if need be.
• EXECUTIVE BOARD
-The Executive board shallconsistonly ofthe officers and theirresponsibility to address anddecide the
disciplinary action forany memberor officer who goes againstmembership duties.
• ORDER OF BUSINESS – Every regularmeeting will be run by the orders as follows:
-Warm up& Drills-Allmembers are free to do a warm up exercise orpractice drills that are suitable
and beneficialfor engagingin Jiu-jitsu techniques.
4. -Practicing/ Learning Jiu-jitsuTechniques-Afterwarmups and drills,the members will learn, share
or practice any Jiu-jitsu techniques givenby the officers orshared byanothermember. Every member
will pair up with a grappling partnerto practice the techniques.
-Rolling-Afterpracticing the techniques,members will engage in combat rolling sessions where they
can use any Jiu-jitsu techniques they wantto submit theiropponent (grappling partner).
• AMENDMENT PROCEDURES - All means of proposals means notice requirements will be discussedand
decided upon through theofficers.
Voting requirements- All current members of the organization have theright to vote.
• MMA SPARRING- MMA sparring is permitted to practice with members at a regularmeeting, with the
permission ofan officer.
