The Role of NSS towards Student in Higher Education

1. Duringmy time at universityItookvariousroles.Mymainrole throughoutthe three yearswasthe
studentambassadorrole.Itwashere I got the opportunitytoworkalongside the Widening
Participationteamandthe AimHigher initiative.Partof myjob role wasto go intosecondaryschools
indeprivedareasandpromote highereducationtothese students,reassuringthemthatuniversity
was a possible route forthemregardlessof theirbackground.Ialsoworkedonsummerschool
programmessupervisingstudentsonresidential tripstothe university.
Duringmy secondyear,I embarkeduponthe ManchesterLeadershipProgramme,inwhichI
receivedasilverawardfordoingfortyhoursof voluntaryworkwithinthe local communitywhich
tookthe formof volunteeringinhomeworkclubsandprimaryschools.Aspartof thisprogramme I
alsohad to write upa researchprojectaboutthe gap inequalityof educationbetweenstudents
fromhighand lowsocioeconomicbackgrounds.Ialsohad the opportunitytoattendseveral lectures
fromCEOs of local andnational companieswhogave talksonleadership.Itwashere thatI was
invitedbythe WideningParticipationteamtoattenda twoday conference atNorthumbria
Universitydesigningalifelong learningsystem,'ELLI'to implementintouniversitiesacrossthe UK.
Alsoduringmysecondyear,I appliedtoworkon the graduationceremoniesforanexternal
companysellinggraduationjewellery - therefore Igottonetworkwithvariouskeystakeholders
involvedwiththe university.Ialsoworkedonthe 'International Orientation'whichinvolvedme
welcominginternational studentstothe universityensuringtheirtransitiontothe UK wasas smooth
as possible.
Due to my experience of beingaveryactive studentinvolvedinvariousuniversityinitiatives,Iwas
chosento deliverpresentationstolocal schoolsandsixthformsaboutuniversitylife.Ialsoattended
careersand universityfairstopromote the universitytoprospectivestudents.
In myfinal yearI continuedtoworkcloselywiththe WideningParticipationandAimhigherinitiatives
and alsotookon a supervisoryrole withinthe InternationalOrientationeventthatIworkedoninmy
previousyear.Here Iwas allowedtodevelopmyleadershipskillsandhelpyoungerstudentsinthe
role as well asmanagingthe transitionof international studentstotheirnew environment.
I alsotook onan additional course unitinmyfinal year,a careerscourse unit.Itwas here that I had
tooka leadership role withinagroupprojectinwhichwe had to designandruna charityeventfor
the BritishRedCross.I had a leadingrole inwritingupthe final reportanddeliveringthe
presentationtokeystakeholders.
Alsoinmy final year,Itookon the role of a keyworker,parttime ina local afterschool club.I was
responsible forthe three tofive yearolds.Ihadto monitormy keystudentsonthe EYFS framework
and promote learningthroughplay.Itwasthroughall these experiencesthatIdecidedtotrain to
become a secondaryEnglishteacher.
