1. Preliminary Task Reflection
This is a continuity task that shows filming and editing of the characteropening a
door and walking in with the camera inside the classroomand sitting down in
opposite another character. They have to exchange few lines of dialogue. This
should demonstrate match on action, shot/reverse and the 180-degree rule.
We were given about 2 hours to practise with the camera, so that we meet the
criteria of the task, which is listed above. We had some difficulty in arranging the
right camera position because the natural lighting kept on coming into the
classroom. Also, when I was coming up the stairs towards the door the space was
compressed so Thabassom had to change the angle of the camera to get the right
position.
Afterwards, as a group we had to come up with the task scenario we listed about
10 ideas in a brainstorm and discussed which scenario will be the best to film.
From the 10 scenarios we came up, we reduced it to the best three which were
counselling, relationship problems and first time meeting someone. We discussed
on what dialogue can be exchanged between one another and what the concept
should be based on. However, when we watched examples of other student
Preliminary Task and relationship problems was one of the top scenarios used.
Furthermore, first time meeting was quite a difficult scenario as the conversation
between the two characters may create an awkward atmosphere. So, we fixed on
the idea of counselling, which I came up with and then we had to come up with a
theme on what we will talk about. Thabassom came up with an idea to talk about
a student being bullied in school; we then, had to come up with few dialogues
which I and Gabrielle will exchange to one another.
I played the student and during filming I kept on looking into the camera because
I felt uncomfortable in front of the camera. However, Gabrielle is a former
Performing Arts student, so she was confident in front of the camera and
managed to play her role as a teacher well.
