2. Brightening the interviews with Tom and Sam.
Both of these interviews were too dark so needed
lightening. To lighten the clips I highlighted them on
the timeline, clicked on video effects- adjust then
double clicked auto contrast.
3. Crosscutting the interviews with Sam
and Tom
To crosscut these interviews, we edited them separately and then pieced them together. First, we selected the answers
from Tom’s interview, placed them on the time line in the correct place, then selected the answers from Sam’s interview
and placed them between Tom’s answers. To create conflict we used Tom’s answers first, as he is facing the right and Sam
is facing the left. This shows that they have opposing opinions, thus creating a conflict.
4. Editing Tom’s interview.
After selecting the answers we wanted to use and
placing them with Sam’s answers, we wanted to find
some cutaways to use between answers to make the
segment more interesting. We used a piece of
filming in which Tom was doing his hair as a cutaway
to match an answer about his hair. We also used a
panning shot of male grooming products in a shop to
match an answer in which he talks about
moisturising.
This interview also needed resizing and reframing. To do this we
highlighted the clip on the timeline, changed the image in the
box to 25% so we could see it all properly, the double clicked
and dragged the corners of the box down to make the image
larger. After doing this, we moved the image into the correct
place and saved it.
5. Editing the Movember interview
This interview also needed slightly reframing as part of the wall was visible in the back. To do this we repeated the
process mentioned in the previous slide. This interview comes after a similar interview with a student, therefore
will have similar cutaways. For these interviews we have filmed panning and tilting shots of the Movember posters
and some of the female students wearing stick-on moustaches.
6. Editing the interview with the barber.
This interview needed slightly reframing due to the bin in the background, as it disrupts the mise-en-scene of the
shot. We found there were three answers from the interview that were particularly good, so we cut them from the
interview and placed them on the timeline, and it will be before the interview with The Body Shop and The Fragrance
Shop.
7. Creating the timeline
We wanted to create a timeline to show the history of male grooming. To do this we found pictures on the internet,
of famous figures from the 1950s to present day who all did some form of male grooming. We placed the images in
the correct order on the time line. We wanted to have the years running across the bottom of the screen, so we
created a separate title for each image. To create a title, we clicked on the title option on the tool bar at the top of
the screen and selected the ‘New Title’ option, then selected ‘default crawl’ for the motion. At first, we created a
separate title for each image, but we found that the transition between the text on each slide looked wrong as it
jumped from the previous image(which would end on the left) to crawling back in on the other side. To fix this, we
decided to make one title for all of the images, having each year writing on the same title to crawl in one after the
other. To make the timing of the text match the images, we had to shorted the length of time the images were on
screen and speed up the titles. At first we found that the text did not come in until the third slide, but once we
made these corrections the text and images became synchronised.
8. Cutaways for the Movember
interviews.
The Movember interviews were not crosscut so we needed to film cutaways to cover the
edits between each question. We filmed a group of female sixth form students, a female
teacher and several objects around the school with fake moustaches on. We used short clips
of several of the things we had taped and placed them between questions, thus hiding any
jumps.
9. Editing the opening sequence.
We wanted to create a stop animation effect for our opening sequence. First we filmed somebody
squirting shaving foam onto their hand and smearing in on the mirror. We then filmed somebody
writing ‘Male Grooming’ in the foam letter by letter. We first cut the sequence of the person
putting the shaving foam on their hand and onto the mirror, and then sped it up. To do this, we
right clicked on the clip on the time line, clicked on speed/duration and increased the number in
the speed box to double the default speed. We then selected a short clip of each letter and placed
them on the time line one by one; this created the desired stop animation effect.
10. We scripted a voice over for the documentary
that included statistic on male grooming, as
well as the beauty shops we interviewed.
