Essay about Art Therapy
If there was one thing about kindergarten and grade school that we enjoyed the most would probably be arts and crafts time. We got a break from the
mind–boggling math problems, but we also could have time to draw pictures of whatever we wanted to take home to our parents. You know the
routine....teacher places a blank sheet of paper in front of you, decorates the table with tons of crayons and markers, and lets us go at it for a good
twenty minutes or so until we have a finished product, right? But if you take a deeper look at the portraits drawn, is it just a harmless picture that a
five year old drew or does it have deeper meaning to it. You know the old cliche: "A picture is worth 1,000 words", wellart therapy really supports this

Their normal way of communicating is through art and play." –therapist Rebecca McGrath
The therapist ask the patients to draw what they feel about the situation and from there they can start to make progress toward the recovery period of
the situation. The problem with the children is that when the incident happens they begin to build up a wall between their unconscious and the outside
world. Almost as if they are putting up a defense mechanism that prevents themselves from allowing anything to happen like that again. That is where
the drawing comes in.
"Drawing is a way for the unconscious to break down the wall. Sexual abuse is always a secret. It's pounded into their heads, `Don't talk about it.' Then
they come in, and they think, `well, maybe I can draw about it.'" –therapist Rebecca McGrath
This method is not only proven successful on young children but it is also used on adults who have sexually abused children. Using the art that the
offender's draw, some therapists can confront and determine why the offender has awkward viewpoints towards children.
" Sometimes an offender will draw a child as a very provocative, sexual person, lots of makeup. You then ask, `How old is this person?' They say, `Six.'
then you can say, `Does this look like a 6–year–old child?'" –therapist Rebecca McGrath
The practicing of art therapy has risen noticeably in the last ten years. The number of therapists

"Art therapy is a form of therapy in making of visual images (paintings, drawings, models etc.) in the presences of a qualified art therapist contributes
towards externalization of thoughts and feelings which may otherwise remain unexpressed"(Walter & Gilory, 1992).
My vision of Art Therapy was very vague. I always thought art therapy was a form of therapy for distressed or abused children trying to tell a story
through pictures or drawings. The American Art Therapy Association defines art therapy as amental health profession that uses the creative process of
art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental, and emotional well being of individuals of all ages. Art therapy is a form psychotherapy that

People living with Autism Spectrum Disorder, use art therapy to improve social skills. Epps (2008) believes art therapy is necessary for children
with this disorder because autistic people are mostly visual, concrete thinkers. This form of therapy helps them solve problems visually. Epps (2008)
states that visual characteristics of art help patients, who often experience anxiety in social settings, to relax and enjoy themselves while they are
learning social skills in a carefully controlled environment. The therapist use art therapy as a component in training for social skills because they
believe it will increase the participation in children, simply because they find art acceptable. This form of therapy is great for Autistic people because
it helps them deal with their issues in a non threatening way. It also helps the therapist see what the person is going through if the person is not ready
to "talk" about their feelings. For someone living with HIV/AIDS, I can only imagine all the negative thoughts that consume their minds on a daily
basis. People living with this condition experience a great deal of fatigue, pain, peripheral nerve dysfunction, nausea, loss of appetite, depression, and
headache (Rao, 2009). Symptoms associated with HIV/AIDS can be physical as well as psychological. One strategy to help them cope is art therapy, it
helps the patients manage their symptoms mentally. Therapists working with these patients take the intervention

Art Therapy
How does Art Therapy help in maintaining a person's health or helping them get well from a sickness?
Before finding the answer to this question it is necessary to understand the background, history, and importance of what Art Therapy is. First of all Art
Therapy is a form of psychotherapy. In psychotherapy there is an exploration of feelings and concerns in nonverbal and verbal exercises that use simple
visual art materials. Art therapy focuses on the creative process for a person instead of what they are able to produce. Confusing and difficult feelings
are able to be expressed through using Art Therapy because it is presented in a non–threatening manner. Art Therapy is used to encourage insight,
self–awareness,...show more content...
This took place in Europe when there was a need for emotional self–expression. In order to express this idea art work was portrayed with distortion of
colors, shapes, and surfaces. This started to lead to the idea of abstraction. At this time, William Reich, who was a psychiatrist, started bringing
psychiatry and expressionism together. He thought that this expressive therapy would be good because holding in energy causes both physical and
psychological illnesses. Many "ancient mysteries" also show background of art therapy beginnings. An example of this is presented by Randall
McClellan, a professor for the National Expressive Therapy Association. He said at a conference held at Harvard University:
"The name Rana, meaning 'sun breath,' has its origin in ancient concepts of life that recognized vibration as the fundamental creative force which was
a central principle of the many esoteric mystery schools of the ancient world. It is now evident that the use of music for its ability to alter mind states
and for its effectiveness as a healing force was music's original purpose and an important concept of these mystery schools."
This shows that art therapy is not something recent, instead it has been around for many years, but has been understood completely.
Now we reach the idea of "How does Art Therapy help in health and help in general?". Art Therapy finds the part in each person, according to various
experts, which works toward health and healing.

Depression Through Art Therapy: A Case Study

means I would have to work closely with a doctor to be more informed of the benefits and possible side effects of the medicine for depression
(McInnis, 2014). One disadvantage of the drug therapy could be the side effects that of the medicine because it can cause her more health problems.
According to McInnis, some side effects of the medicines for depression are digestive problems, restlessness, headache, and insomnia. Mrs. Garcia

to identify their emotions as way to help them to replace any negative emotion or thought with positive thoughts that will make them feel better
(McInnis, 2014). One example in which music therapy could be use is to focus on the feelings of sadness that Mrs. Garcia still feel because of the
loss of her husband. Through this therapy the therapist can help Mrs. Garcia to replace her sadness with positive and happy memories that she had
with her husband. The therapist could help Mrs. Garcia to focus on the happy moments she had with her husband and stating how he is with her in
spirit as way to make her feel better and have a positive attitude in her life (McInnis, 2014). One disadvantage is how through music therapy Mrs.
Garcia can feel more emotionally vulnerable what can affect her emotional health (McInnis, 2014). For this reason, it is important that Mrs. Garcia trust
her therapist as way to express her emotions and feelings during the

Creative art therapy is a technique that implements theory of three major schools of thought:

Art Therapy and Me Among the fields of psychology there are different areas that can help people. One of the categories is therapy which is intended
to relieve and treat disorders. A form of therapy is art therapy where people can express themselves by drawing, singing, dancing, poetry or acting.Art
therapy is an interest to me because I enjoy expressing myself through art.
One form of treatment is art therapy. Art therapy can alleviate the stress a patient might encounter and encourage them to express themselves through
art ("Art"). It can help decrease stress for people coping with substance abuse or addictions, depression, health disorders, mental illness, trauma and a
whole lot more. Due to art therapy we can study behavior and reasoning and implement therapeutic goals. We are able to understand their behavior and
reasoning, and if they have a cognitive and neurological problem through psychology which is a science that studies behavior, physiological and
cognitive process. To become an art therapist you are required to hold a master's degree in the areas of psychology or counseling. Art therapist have the

I like that it has one–on–one interaction with the patients and that you can see first–hand a person's growth as they try to reach their goals that were
set. The nice part about it is that there is a wide variety of situations and people so there is no one with the same exactly background. Art therapy can
be used with all ages from children to adults and on occasions it could be a whole family. In my view you can use the some of the tactics of art
therapy in our daily life. "Examples of this can include the tortured writer writing macabre poetry or the abused child creating dark and unhappy
looking pictures" ("Start"). Through art therapy they can express themselves in a method that's easier rather than communicate emotions

Art Therapy
Art therapy includes diverse components, such as artistic activity, relationship between client and therapist, and emotionally safe space, which assist
clients in growing internally and influences their inner world in many ways. In a single art therapy session, the artistic activity might be the
fundamental tenet that is most influential. For those who are hospitalized and have emotional distress, creating art can be a mood regulation strategy
that helps patients to better deal with the stressful life event. Research on the mood regulation effect of art–making has been conducted with
experimental study design comparing the other forms of expressive activities or non–artistic activities. Art–making activities, including coloring

The studies show that an artistic activity has the potential to improve one's negative mood state by distracting thoughts and feelings, including anxiety,
anger, and sadness, and diverting attention to positive feelings rather than by venting negative feelings. Drawing has a general mood–enhancing effect
regardless of the drawing theme; however, expressing happiness, which is positive distraction, brings a significant improvement in mood states
compared to venting through art and non–expressive artistic activities (Smolarski, Leone, & Robbins, 2015). Individuals with negative moods can be
distracted, when they focus on positive aspects while creating art (Drake & Winner, 2012; Smolarski, Leone, & Robbins, 2015). Cognitive focus during
art creation rather than the artistic medium affects anxiety levels (Curl, 2008). Venting through art can cause rumination on the experience that brings
negative feelings and increases a level of anxiety. In contrast, the positive cognitive focus while producing art distracts from current negative feelings
and diverts the artist's attention from negative emotions (Curl, 2008; Dalebroux, Goldstein, & Winner, 2008). Creative art under the positive distraction
and neutral distraction conditions eliminate anger by offering an attractive activity and grabbing attention whereas venting through art does not improve

Art Therapy And Depression
Summary of research findings: Art therapy and relaxation therapy are both viable options to reduce depression. Art therapy allows patients to express
anger and hostility and helps reduce depression. (Im, 2014) There are many articles to suggest that art therapy is effective; however, there are not
enough to understand the long–term effects of art therapy and its ability to reduce depression. (Maujean, 2014) Art therapists need credentials in order
to practice and they are not readily available. Relaxation interventions can be given by anyone and can be done at any time; the patient doesn't need a
therapist to continue to do these interventions either. There aren't any studies about the long term effects of art therapy on depression because when a
patient is discharged from inpatient care there aren't ways for that patient to continue with art therapy; therefore, art therapy, at this point is, only a
great short term therapy. Studies to suggest that relaxation has long–term effects are also mostly unreported, but patients who learn relaxation
techniques through therapy were able to increase skills that allowed them to reduce their stress and better ways to cope with their symptoms. (Lee,
2009) Relaxation therapy is a widely used therapy to reduce headaches, asthma, hypertension, panic attacks, anxiety and depression that is co–morbid

Also most of the research done has been done in conjunction with other treatments. This is understandable, but most of the articles suggest that
relaxation therapy be used in conjunction with "traditional" treatments. Although relaxation has many positive effects on depression there is no benefit
on the physical domain. (Chen, 2015) There also needs to be more research done on the long–term effects of relaxation therapy, because there are very
few articles about the long–term effects. People may not know that it does have long–term

Art Therapy: Treatment for Anxiety and Depression in Adults Art has been a part of our culture since the very beginning of time and has been used
for many different purposes. The creation and viewing of art has the ability to transport us to another time or place, to calm us, to help us express our
emotions and define our sense of self. It is only natural then to wonder how we can use these emotions towards art to learn more about a person and
their situation as well as how to use art to help someone cope with any harmful emotions or difficulties they may be dealing with. The field of art
therapy aims to do just this. Art therapy employs the use of many different mediums and techniques such as painting, modeling, and drawing as a
unique way to diagnose a mental condition. It also uses these mediums as a method to help alleviate and manage harmful symptoms by helping patients
to de–stress and express their emotions in a healthy manner, especially if they are unable (or unwilling) to verbalize their thoughts and feelings. For
adults with anxiety and/or depression, art therapy has shown to be a wonderful coping mechanism, helping them to relax and develop a healthier self.
History and Types of Art Therapy While art has long been used as an instrument for self–expression and communication, the use of art as a therapeutic

It is also not uncommon for someone who is struggling with anxiety to also be dealing with depression, and for someone with depression to also have
anxiety. Because depression and anxiety are so common and can affect everyone in so many different ways, the need for a variety of treatment options
has become more and more necessary as these numbers continue to

A form of therapy is art therapy where people can express themselves by drawing, singing, dancing, poetry or acting.Art therapy is an interest to me because I enjoy expressing myself through art. It can help decrease stress for people coping with substance abuse or addictions, depression, health disorders, mental illness, trauma and a whole lot more. • 10. Art Therapy Art therapy includes diverse components, such as artistic activity, relationship between client and therapist, and emotionally safe space, which assist clients in growing internally and influences their inner world in many ways. In a single art therapy session, the artistic activity might be the fundamental tenet that is most influential. For those who are hospitalized and have emotional distress, creating art can be a mood regulation strategy that helps patients to better deal with the stressful life event. Research on the mood regulation effect of art–making has been conducted with experimental study design comparing the other forms of expressive activities or non–artistic activities. Art–making activities, including coloring mandalas and...show more content... The studies show that an artistic activity has the potential to improve one's negative mood state by distracting thoughts and feelings, including anxiety, anger, and sadness, and diverting attention to positive feelings rather than by venting negative feelings. Drawing has a general mood–enhancing effect regardless of the drawing theme; however, expressing happiness, which is positive distraction, brings a significant improvement in mood states compared to venting through art and non–expressive artistic activities (Smolarski, Leone, & Robbins, 2015). Individuals with negative moods can be distracted, when they focus on positive aspects while creating art (Drake & Winner, 2012; Smolarski, Leone, & Robbins, 2015). Cognitive focus during art creation rather than the artistic medium affects anxiety levels (Curl, 2008). Venting through art can cause rumination on the experience that brings negative feelings and increases a level of anxiety. In contrast, the positive cognitive focus while producing art distracts from current negative feelings and diverts the artist's attention from negative emotions (Curl, 2008; Dalebroux, Goldstein, & Winner, 2008). Creative art under the positive distraction and neutral distraction conditions eliminate anger by offering an attractive activity and grabbing attention whereas venting through art does not improve Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Art Therapy And Depression Summary of research findings: Art therapy and relaxation therapy are both viable options to reduce depression. Art therapy allows patients to express anger and hostility and helps reduce depression. (Im, 2014) There are many articles to suggest that art therapy is effective; however, there are not enough to understand the long–term effects of art therapy and its ability to reduce depression. (Maujean, 2014) Art therapists need credentials in order to practice and they are not readily available. Relaxation interventions can be given by anyone and can be done at any time; the patient doesn't need a therapist to continue to do these interventions either. There aren't any studies about the long term effects of art therapy on depression because when a patient is discharged from inpatient care there aren't ways for that patient to continue with art therapy; therefore, art therapy, at this point is, only a great short term therapy. Studies to suggest that relaxation has long–term effects are also mostly unreported, but patients who learn relaxation techniques through therapy were able to increase skills that allowed them to reduce their stress and better ways to cope with their symptoms.
