In the garment industry, the use of computer-aided design (CAD) has revolutionized the way clothes are designed and manufactured. CAD software allows designers and manufacturers to create and edit digital designs, which can be translated into physical garments. This essay will explore the role of CAD in the garment industry, its benefits, and its impact on the industry.
CAD software is used in various stages of the garment production process, from design to production. In the design stage, CAD software allows designers to create digital sketches and make changes to the designs quickly. This eliminates the need for physical prototypes, which can be time-consuming and expensive. The software also allows designers to experiment with different fabrics, colors, and textures, giving them greater flexibility in the design process.
Once the design is finalized, CAD software can be used to create patterns and markers. Patterns are templates used to cut fabric to the correct size and shape, while markers are layouts of the patterns on a large piece of fabric, maximizing the use of the material. CAD software allows patterns and markers to be created quickly and accurately, reducing the likelihood of errors and minimizing waste.
CAD software also plays a crucial role in the production process. Once the patterns and markers are created, they can be sent to computer-controlled cutting machines, which can cut the fabric quickly and accurately. This not only saves time but also ensures consistency in the cutting process, resulting in garments that fit correctly.
The benefits of using CAD software in the garment industry are numerous. First and foremost, it reduces the time and cost involved in the design and production process. Digital designs can be created and modified quickly and easily, and patterns and markers can be created with greater accuracy, reducing the need for physical prototypes and minimizing waste. This can lead to lower production costs and faster turnaround times, enabling companies to bring new products to market more quickly.
CAD software also allows for greater creativity and flexibility in the design process. Designers can experiment with different fabrics, colors, and textures, without the need for physical prototypes. This allows for more innovative and unique designs, which can set companies apart in a crowded market.
Another benefit of using CAD software is that it allows for greater customization. With digital designs, it is possible to create garments that are tailored to individual customers' preferences, without the need for extensive manual work. This can lead to a more personalized customer experience, which can increase customer loyalty and satisfaction.

2. Introduction
CAD, or computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), is technology for
design and technical documentation, which replaces manual drafting with
an automated process. If you're a designer, drafter, architect, or engineer,
you've probably used 2D or 3D CAD programs such as AutoCAD or AutoCAD
LT software.
The Apparel Computer-aided design (CAD) tool
provides great ease to the cutting department and saves a lot of money and
time. The system not only can design pattern, modify pattern and grading in
the computer, but also can import manual designed patterns to the
software by digitizer. Then go to grading, nesting, printing and plotting. Then
go to grading, nesting, printing and plotting. Manual graded patterns can
also be imported to our system for modifying and saving.
3. Every coming generation is more fashion-conscious so there is a
huge demand for new-fangled weave designs. It is not easy for
them to remain competitive, by merely depending upon the
traditional way of designing, because today's design becomes out
of fashion tomorrow. Any textile industry will think about
improving efficiency, maximum utilization of resources, and
improvement in services for customer satisfaction. A search of
these elements leads towards the development and use of new
technologies. As the proverb says "Creativity is one per cent
inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration." but computers
have confirmed it wrong. They have made textile designing
simpler, faster, more precise and enjoyable. The designer can
create his motifs with a mouse or pen. Once the design is created,
further process of editing the design i.e., clipping of certain parts,
adding new shapes, changing the shapes, distortion, resizing,
recolouration, colour reduction, replicating and combining as per
the need can be done at the minimum possible time. Also, one
part of the design can be altered without affecting the rest.
Why CAD/CAM Is Necessary Today?

7. Features of a CAD Software
1. Solid Modeling: With this, any model can be constructed using
parameters like measurements, physics etc. and can be edited at
any point in time be it undoing or modifying it keeping the
original as it is.
2. Surface Modeling: With CAD, solid components can be given texture,
details by trimming, stitching and joining different surfaces to create
the final shape of the model.
4. Drafting details: 3D drawing can also be created from a 2D
drawing of the components or assemblies only by providing
the parameters and dimensions.
3. Assembly: With CAD, assembling of the models created in solid
or surface modeling can be done to get an overview of how the
product will look in the final assembling allowing us to make
changes accordingly. It is also used to see actual fittings and the
working of the assembled model.
8. The CAD software is being used on a large-scale basis by a number of engineering professionals and firms for various
applications. The most common application of CAD software is designing and drafting. Here are some of the benefits of
implementing CAD systems in the companies:
Benefits of the CAD Software
1. Increase in the productivity of the designer.
2. Improve the quality of the design.
3. Better communications.
4. Creating documentation of the design.
5. Creating the database for manufacturing.
6. Simulations.
7. Elimination of inventory.
9. Factors to consider before installing a
CAD system
Installation of the software for any company should depend upon its requirement.
Some of the factors that must be considered while buying or upgrading a CAD
system/software can be as:
• Buying something according to the requirement and not to the extra features or
brand value.
• Determining the budget that must be allotted for the software and the expected
ROI (Return on Investment) from it.
• Initial hardware present must be checked against the requirements of CAD
software vendors otherwise the software may not function properly.
• The software must have a user-friendly interface for the operator to feel
comfortable using it.
• Asking for a free trial version of the software to check its compatibility with
resources available
10. Most of the software comes with a different package. The basic level is
often free or priced less but comes with a lesser number of features, but
more features can be added or upgraded with paid modules More the
number of tools, more will be the cost. They also come with the
subscriptions system where we can use the license for a maximum
period which we have already paid for. For a glimpse of the pricing, I’m
taking examples from some of the major CAD systems. Gerber and
Lectra have systems starting from $10,000 and with a full set-up of
software (more than one workstation), drafting table, digitizer, plotter
and computers at $40,000. Master Pattern from PAD is priced at $4,500.
TUKATECH has a price of $7,500 for basic program. WildGinger is priced
under $4,000. AutoCAD and TurboCAD are ranged from $100 to $400
depending on the features. Pricing is often based on individual packages
designed for company needs thus they should be bought depending
upon the need the company.

11. The way in which technology is improving, we can expect a future wherein the
entire process of garment manufacturing would be done through machines by
a powerful algorithm and with very little human presence. With On-demand
Manufacturing becoming the new way of production CAD has already
influenced the industry with its 3D visual rendering of garments on to the
human figures. It will also play an important role in a 3D printed fashion which
is expected to becoming the next big thing in the fashion industry. With CAD,
there is no turning back to the era of hand-drawn design because of its huge
potential of changing this diverse industry, pushing forward the boundaries of
fashion.
Future of CAD in the apparel industry
12. The industry survey on the apparel CAD systems underlined the benefits of the use of the same in terms of
productivity, quality, efficiency etc that helps to develop the business and attracts new customers.
Reduction in lead-time is a great advantage, which provides the manufacturer with a much-needed
breathing space in the ever-growing competitive market. However, there is a further scope for the study to
find about the market share and growth of CAD companies in the Bangladeshi market and the reasons for
the popularity of the more accepted system. It is important to know how rapidly the apparel Industry is
responding to the intervention of Information Technology in the cutting room. Another vital thing that
remains in the scope is the requirement of investments and return on investments.
