POLYMER LIGHT EMITTING DIODE
INTRODUCTION
Polymer LED (Light-emitting diode –sometimes called light-emitting
polymer or poly LED - is a technology based on the use of polymer as the
semiconductor material in LEDs. Polymers are chemical substance that
consists of large molecules that are themselves, made from many smaller
and simpler molecules. Polymers are largely indentified with insulation.
Research institutes have come up with ideas to integrate polymers into
main stream electronic as it has been established that certain polymers
have typical conductive and light emitting properties.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
As shown it consists of cathode, polymer, anode and substrate. It emits
light when it is connected to external voltage. It uses polymers such as
poly(e.g. p-phenylene vinylene) and polyfluorene in the construction of
polymer LED. Hence it is known as Poly LED. Refer working of OLED in
order to know how this special type of OLED works.
PolymerLEDDisadvantages
Following are the disadvantages of
Polymer LED:
• Emitter part is sensitive to oxidation
and humidity.
• Due to color shift, different polymers
have different lifetimes.
• Polymer LEDs have short lifetime at
high luminescence.
PolymerLEDAdvantages
Following are the advantages of
Polymer LED:
• They are very efficient and
hence produces good amount of
light with small power
consumption.
• Light-Weight
• Thin and Flexible
• High temperature range
• Large viewing angle
• Shorter response time
• smooth brightness
• Very low
production/manufacturing costs
• High contrast
• Large single emitter and
arbitrary structures
Polymer LED Applications
Following are the applications of Polymer LED:
• It is used as display in mobile phones, laptops, TVs and advertising space. It is
widely used in lighting industry for variety of applications.
• Used in the car
• Used in vests
• Used in e-newspaper
