is being driven by two converging phenomena

As only one percent of the total available water is fit for human use, fresh water has become a critical limiting
resource in many parts of the world. main reasons for this crisis are :
Growing demand : the global population is growing rapidly, putting more pressureon our
water supply.
Diminishing supply : Wewill always have the same amount of water because of Earth is a
closed system. Moreover, the amount of usable water is reducing at an alarming rate dueto
contamination, leading to water shortage.

4. Human activities impact the quality of
water. Some of the activities that
effect water quality are :
USE of fertilizers and pesticides
Sewage discharge
Improper disposal of waste

Acidification

5. USE of fertilizers and pesticides
When pesticides {such as DDT} or fertilizers are applied to
crops, the excess material either run off the land or seep into the
groundwater, ultimately mixing with water bodies such as lakesor
stream. Water gets contaminated this way.

6. Sewage discharge
Untreated water inadequately treated household waste becomesa major
source of water pollution. These are dumpedin the lagoons, rivers and oceans.
Sewage carries microbial pathogens, which are the primary cause of spread of
diseases. On many islands across the Maldives, sewage is kept in septic tanks
buried underground.When these tanks are full or contents leak into the
ground and mix with the ground water

7. Improper disposal of waste
Open water bodies lie rivers and streams can get polluted by rubbish such as
plastic bags, bottles, paper and tin canswhich are thrown by people. Chemicals
from industries are also at alltimes discharged into rivers/streams which
contaminates water .

Waterenters a landfill from a numberof sources such as precipitation, groundwater and the
disposal of liquids. Waterplays two major functions in landfills :
 Act as a medium essential for bacterial activity in organic waste and for chemical breakdown.
 Act as a medium for movement of contaminants.

Acidification of surface of surface water, mainly lakesand reservoirs,
happens due to air pollution. Sulphur dioxide from power plants,
waste materials from heavy industrial plantssuch as steel and emission
from motor vehicles react with water to acidify it.
