Questions
The following slides contain scenarios that one might
see during a tennis match.
Consider each scenario and how the good habits of
tennis are or are not followed.

It may be helpful to have your own players act as stand
ins for characters in the scenarios.

At a junior high tennis tournament, a group of players
decides to sit on the side of the courts opposite the
tournament desk (from which players are being called
to go on court). They are hanging out, talking to their
teammates on the court, and having a good time. One
sees a serve go out and tells his friend he needs to call
it out. Near the end of the match, their coach
approaches and tells two of them that they are being
called to play a doubles match.

whynot?
During a match, players are switching ends of the
court. After sitting on the bench for a minute, one
of the players realizes he is thirsty but doesn’t
have any water. “Do you mind if I run and get
some water from my friend?” he asks his opponent.
After a minute, returns with a bottle of water and
has a quick drink before going out on to the court.

While on their way out to a court to play, two
junior high players watch some good points being
played as they walk behind the courts. They are
along the fence line, so they aren’t bothering the
players on the court.
9. Whatdidplayer
Ado wrong?
Player A steps up to serve. He makes sure he is in the
right position, behind the baseline between the center
mark and sideline. He hits a first serve and it flies into
the net. Not having another ball, he walks up to the
net to retrieve his missed serve and walks back to hit a
second serve.
11. WhatisPlayerBdoing
wrong?
When returning serve, Player B calls a first serve out
and watches as it rolls behind the adjacent court. She
turns and readies herself for the second serve. She
returns the second serve and the players play out the
point. After the point is over, she starts to walk to get
the second ball for the server. A point is being played
on the next court, so she waits until it is over. The
point ends and she asks one of the players for help
getting the ball behind their court.
