Facebook announced plans to launch a new digital currency called Libra that will allow users to make purchases and send money to others on Facebook's platforms and elsewhere. The currency will be backed by real-world assets such as bank deposits and short-term government securities. Libra is scheduled to launch in the first half of 2020 and will be run by the independent Libra Association based in Geneva, Switzerland.
