CULTURE
The culture of the United Kingdom, also called "British culture", can be described as the legacy
of the history of a developed island country, a great power and also as the result of the political
union of four countries, each one retaining its distinctive elements of traditions, customs and
symbolism. As a result of the dominance of the British Empire, the influence of British culture
can be seen in the language, traditions, customs and legal systems of many of its former colonies,
such as Canada, Australia, India and the United States.
Art and culture have historically been influenced by Western ideology. Since the expansion of
the British Empire, the experience of military, political and economic power led to a technique,
taste and sensitivity unique to the artists of the United Kingdom. The British used their art "to
illustrate their knowledge and lead the natural world," while settlers from North America,
Australasia and South Africa "embarked on the search for a distinctive and appropriate artistic
expression for their national identity." The empire was "at the center, rather than on the margins,
of the history of British art," and the visual arts of the Victorian era have been fundamental to the
construction, celebration and expression of identity.
3. ART
The art of the United Kingdom includes all the artistic manifestations carried out from the
foundation of the country to the present. Nevertheless, great part of the denominated British art
comes from before 1707, being Stonehenge the oldest artistic manifestation in the country, since
it dates from the year 2500 a.C. Since then, the art in the territory understood by the United
Kingdom was developed over the centuries, and by the time of the union of the four nations, each
already had a defined artistic tradition.
The period of greatest boom for the British arts was during the Empire, when the United
Kingdom was placed at the head of several artistic movements in which besides representing
historical, biblical and mythological moments, they captured moments of daily life that could
transcend in the art.
In addition, thanks to imperial expansion artists could take influences from the cultures of
countries under British rule, such as India, the United States, etc., at the same time that British
works left their mark and legacy within the artists of the colonies. During the 20th century,
British art began to expand into the currents of modern and contemporary art, such as post-
impressionism, cubism and impressionism.
4. Currently, there are several artistic institutions in the United Kingdom, from which have emerged
several artistic movements and outstanding artists within their field. Among these are the Royal
Academy, the Royal College of Art, the Royal Society of Arts and the Tate gallery. In addition,
several internationally renowned museums and galleries are located within its borders, such as
the British Museum, the National Gallery in London, the National Gallery of Scotland, the
Science Museum in London and the Yorkshire Museum, among others.
MUSIC
There are several popular music styles in the United Kingdom, from folk music in England,
Ireland, Scotland and Wales, to heavy metal. Among the most notable British composers of
classical music are: William Byrd, Henry Purcell, Edward Elgar, Gustav Holst, Arthur Sullivan
(best known for working with the librettist WS Gilbert), Ralph Vaughan Williams and Benjamin
Britten, pioneer of modern British opera . Peter Maxwell Davies is one of the most outstanding
living composers in the country and the current music teacher of the Queen. Also here are several
symphonic orchestras and internationally renowned choirs, such as the BBC Symphony
Orchestra and the London Symphony Choir. Baroque composer Georg Friedrich Händel,
although born in Germany, obtained British citizenship and some of his best works, such as The
Messiah, were written in English.
5. The most prominent Britons who have influenced the popular music of the last fifty years include
The Beatles, Queen, Cliff Richard, Elton John, BeeGees, LedZeppelin, Pink Floyd and
TheRollingStones, all of them with sales exceeding two hundred million records in all the world.
Likewise, The Beatles have the record of musical sales, with more than one billion discs sold
internationally. A large number of British cities are known for their music scene: statistically, the
Liverpool artists are the most successful on the UK Singles Chart. For its part, Glasgow's
contribution to the music scene was recognized in 2008, when it was named by UNESCO as
"City of Music", a title it shares with Bologna, Seville and Ghent.
GASTRONOMY
Historically, UK cuisine has been labeled as "tasteless dishes made with low-quality ingredients,
mixed with simple sauces to accentuate the flavor, rather than disguise it." However, British
cuisine has absorbed the cultural influence of immigrants established in the country, producing
several hybrid dishes, such as chicken tikkamasala, considered "the real British national dish".
The traditional dishes of British cuisine include fish and chips , the Sundayroast, the steak and
kidney pie and the bangers and mash. The cuisine of the United Kingdom has many national and
regional variants, such as the gastronomy of England, Scotland and Wales, which have
6. developed their own regional dishes, such as Cheshire cheese, Yorkshire pudding and Welsh
cake.
As in other Western countries, the consumption of fast food is very broad, which has caused a
public health problem as serious as that suffered by the United States.
Tea is the most popular drink in the country and in fact it is also one of the best known
gastronomic traditions of the United Kingdom cuisine. Originated during the nineteenth century,
the tea time is not exclusively for consuming tea, but is one of the central meals of the British,
similar to a snack or dinner, since the drink is accompanied with other foods , like sandwiches
and sandwiches. The tea breaky the tea sandwich are two variations of this meal.
THREE TOPIC ABOUT THE COUNTRY:
1. It is a developed country that by its net volume of gross domestic product is the fifth
world economy. It was the first industrialized country in the world and the main world
power during the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century (1815-
1945), but the economic cost of the two world wars and the decline of its empire in the
second part of the 20th century diminished its role in international relations. However, it
still maintains a significant economic, cultural, military and political influence, and is a
nuclear power.
7. 2. It is a Member State of the European Union one of the five permanent members of the
Security Council of the United Nations.
3. The United Kingdom is a parliamentary monarchy whose head of state is Isabel II. She is
also the head of state of the other fifteen countries of the Commonwealth of Nations,
placing the United Kingdom in a personal union with those nations.
4. The queen has sovereignty over the dependencies of the Crown, the Isle of Man and the
bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey. These are not part of the United Kingdom, although
the British Government manages its external relations and defense, and the parliament has
the authority to legislate on its behalf.
GREETINGS:
A handshake is the most common form of greeting between Britons, when presenting and saying
goodbye, both in social and business meetings and indistinctly whether they are men or women.
Of course, the handshakes are soft, not as narrow and strong as those of the Spaniards. While
shaking hands, you should keep your eyes on the other person's eyes. Women should always
shake hands first with men.
Young people like to address themselves by name almost immediately, however, it is not a sign
of friendship but to break the ice and facilitate conversation. On the contrary, older people do not
like it and prefer formality and use Mr / Ms.
8. If they tell us: How are you? You must answer: I am fine thankyou and you?
If they tell us: Nicetomeetyou. You must answer: Nicetomeetyoutoo.
As informal greetings: Hi or Hello, or How'syou? Fine, thank
You?
CROSS YOUR HEART: consiste en dibujar una equis o una cruz delante del pecho
mientras dices algo para remarcar que lo que has dicho es verdad.
LOSER: consiste en trazar la letra L con la mano derecha encima de la frente y traduce
“perdedor” o “tonto”.
CULTURE AND TRADITIONS:
The British are known for their unconditional love for the five o'clock tea, commonly called
FiveO'clock Tea. They are also famous for being the creators of football and for their fanaticism
for cricket, one of the English sports par excellence. Rugby is another of his passions. In general,
they are quite fond of sports, in the school they dedicate several hours to physical education and
in the universities there are all kinds of sports teams.
They are quite disciplined and exquisite with good manners.
9. They meet with friends to drink a few drinks in the PUBLIC HOUSES better known as pubs.
