COMPETITORS
Oracle corporation has got mainly 4 competitors. SAP is the one of the competitor, but oracle don’t
see themmuch in theircloudor industryspecificareas.Salesforce.comhasundoubtedlybeenatthe
forefront. In a reasonably short space of time oracle are in number two with over a billion dollars in
businessthroughthe cloud.IBMhas beena long-time competitor,butoracle maintainaco-opetition
withthem. As oracle release variousproducts like Exadata, itindirectlycompeteswithEMC.Oracle is
tryingto stay relevantinaworldthat has quicklymovedfromsoftware downloadedontomainframe
computers. Instead of operating the necessary infrastructure in-house, business customers are
increasingly handing off the job to another company and merely connecting to their data via the
Internet. To show that Oracle gets it, Ellison, now the company’s executive chairman and chief
technologyofficer,gave anupdateonOracle’sbigpushintotheworldof cloudcomputingbyunveiling
over24 newproductsthathe feelsdistinguishesthe companyfromcloud-basedrivalslikeGoogle and
Microsoft 2.64%.
Oracle hasbeenbusytryingtomake aname foritselfinthe worldof cloudcomputingbyhiringlegions
of cloud engineers in the past few months. Its desire to become a big cloud player coincides with a
steadydecline initssale of newcustomer software licenses, akeymetric for the company. With the
intense focus on the cloud, Ellison tried to make the case that Oracle has an entirely new list of
competitors. The way he explained it, Oracle is no longer duelling with old-line giants SAP and IBM
2.74% in selling software and hardware
Oracle now sees its primary competition as Salesforce CRM 6.31% and Workday, which sell cloud
services for sales teams and human resources. As Fortune’s Barb Darrow reported, Oracle is
threatened by Salesforce’s enterprise software, and part of the reason Oracle is building a cloud
infrastructure is to counter the challenge. While Oracle competes with Salesforce and Workday in
selling software services,Ellison said Oracle ORCL 2.61% is also fighting with Amazonand Microsoft,
which sell access to data centre services like networking and storage.
“Theyare not a bookstore onlyanymore,”Ellisonjoked,referringtoAmazonbecomingamajorcloud
provider.
Oracle has a handful of new services including new e-commerce software, human resource
applications, and support for the open-source data technologies Hadoop and Spark, among others.
With all of this, Ellison claimed that the company now has more to offer customers than Amazon,
which he said only sells storage, computing, and networking services.
The general theme around the event was that Oracle’s cloud is now “complete,” with all that is
necessary for creating and managing business software. But it’s unclear whether that’s enough.
Cloudproviderslike AmazonandGoogle GOOG 2.52% have beenbusybuildingouttheirbusinesses
for years. You have to wonderjusthow well this“complete”versionof the Oracle cloudwill be able
to compete given how long it has takento create. To counter competition, Oracle have a focused on
their sales-team where some teams sell only CRM to beat Salesforce. Similarly, oracle have other
teams dedicated to different domains. Oracle introduced specialization within OPN (Oracle Partner
Network) to work with competent go-to partners.

Competitive advantages of Oracle Corporation

Larry Ellison, Oracle corporation CEO, said that “when the internet was first started ,the primary
device connected to it was the personal computer .Now we have migrated that complexity off the
desktop and moved it to internet servers .That has been recast as Cloud computing”.
Rather than view the cloud just as a cost saving platform, CFOs recognize the strategic benefits that
the cloud delivers to get critical growth initiatives up and running quickly, whether that’s using the
cloudto quickly, whetherthat’susingthe cloudquicklyupgrade to a new application, ora delivering
newmobile oranalytical capabilitiestoemployees.Recentresearchconfirmsthat35% of companies
that have ventured into the cloud have been able to cut costs as a result.
