A myocardial infarction, or heart attack, occurs when blood flow to the heart is suddenly blocked, reducing oxygen levels and potentially causing the heart to stop. Over 1.5 million people in the United States have heart attacks each year, making it a leading cause of death. Symptoms of a heart attack include chest pain, anxiety, coughing, fainting, vomiting, and shortness of breath. Risk factors include smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, heavy drinking, and obesity. Treatment for a heart attack involves staying in the hospital overnight with oxygen and intravenous medications to help reduce strain on the heart.
