What is Retailing ?
Retailing is the set of business activities that adds value to the products
and services sold to consumers for their personal or family use.
Retail:
The word retail orginates from the French word “Retaillier”, which means
”to cut, divide into pieces and sell in small quantities to consumers”
Retailer:
Retailer is a person, agent, agency, company or organization that helps in
reaching the goods, merchandise or services to the end consumers.
The Retail Sector in India:
There is a retail revolution in India, More malls, large stores, more
number of shoppers and products. In early 90’s this was pioneered by
organized retailers like Food world, Shopper’s stop etc.
• Retail industry is estimated at Rs850,000 crores as per Euro monitor
• Of which organized retail contribution as per industry estimates is
only 30 -35000 crores in 2005
• Organised retail contribution, is expected to grow 1,50,000 crores
by 2016, as per industry estimates
• More number of companies like Reliance, Bombay Dyeing, Tatas,
RPG, Pantaloons, Birlas, Life style are getting into retail.
• Global retailers like Carrefour, Tesco, Wal-mart, Metro etc have set
foot into India.
