Nancy Foasberg, humanities librarian at Queens College, City University of
New York, in her article, “Teaching Citation Rhetorically,” frames “citation for
students in two ways: first, as a rhetorical strategy by which writers position
themselves in a larger scholarly conversation and, second, as a collegial
gesture intended to make it as easy as possible for readers to access the sources
referred to.”
Example: No pages are necessary in an online source.
1. Gather information about the source.
2. Organize the information according the container concept.
3. Think about what to communicate to the audience.
RESEARCHERS:
THE GOAL IS
COMMUNICATION
Documentation is a “core academic principle” applied “even to projects that
aren’t texts at all.” (Kitzpatrick xiii)

Editor's Notes

  1. A new MLA? Why? When does it come up? ProQuest will begin using this in November 2016. The new MLA handbook addresses the flaws inherent in citation according to a source’s publication format. That is – the Web. The aim is to facilitate the scholarly conversation. In 2014, Tim Parks questioned the purpose of footnotes and references in the age of Google. Is it really necessary? If so, how do we make it practical? (Parks)
  2. Here are real reasons for students to cite. They learn evaluation skills necessary to continued study and understanding scholarship. They enter the scholarly conversation for their discipline. They can enter the conversation of their discipline. The goal is KI=KO. Each click brings in a color point.
  3. Review the addition of more containers. New formats for information. Reader and writer have the same references. More than one container for web containers.
  4. Terrell, Heather B. "Reference is Dead, Long Live Reference: Electronic Collections in the Digital Age." Information Technology and Libraries (Online) 34.4 (2015): 55-62. ProQuest. 5. Here’s an old citation. What is “34.4 stand for? Where on the Web? How can I quickly get there from this citation?
  6. What’s new page review. Go to the link and discuss.
  7. Handout and style center exploration. Online help. Use the Container Sheet for practice. Go to the website and check out the support.
  8. The final test is – Can the reader find the reference?
  9. Not nit picking. Suggestions for nontraditional assignment formats such as slide shows, websites, video are addressed in Chapter 4. (MLA 127). Handouts of works cited list, placement at the end, overlay text.
  10. There are problems with URL line if it is an active link. Can use spaces between to show indent if medium does not allow (like Google Docs). If we had a permalink or a DOI -Use it! When in doubt, ask the librarian, your professor or the MLA and Purdue Owl online supports. Remember to
