Summer Reading Challenge Champion Volunteer


Department      Libraries, Heritage and Archive Service

Supervised by   Library Manager


Purpose         To assist in the delivery of Bexley Library Service’s Summer Reading
                Challenge and related activities in libraries and community venues,
                encouraging children and young people to discover the pleasure of
                reading.
                Volunteers will be asked for a minimum commitment of 20 hours.


Location/Time   All Bexley libraries Monday – Sunday
                For the duration of the Summer Reading Challenge July - September

Tasks           With guidance from library staff:

                           To encourage children and young people to join and complete the
                            Summer Reading Challenge.
                           To talk to children and young people about the books they have
                            read.
                           To give out awards as appropriate
                           To complete accurate records as required.
                           To assist with associated promotional events.

                          A good general education
Skills and                Warm, polite and friendly manner.
experience                Reliable and dependable.
                          Good communication skills with children and young people and
                           their parents/carers.
                          Commitment to equal opportunities and diversity.
                          Organised and able to keep accurate records.

Offer to                  Flexible volunteering opportunity – available over 7 days including
volunteer                  evenings
                          Experience volunteering in a library setting
                          Experience volunteering as part of a team
                          Gain confidence in dealing with members of the public especially
                           children and young people.
                          Improve your customer care skills
                          Help improve your skills to get back to work
                          Receive a reference after an agreed period of volunteering

Training           Appropriate training will be given.
